Chapter 60: Amos (3)

At his question, the atmosphere became even more tense. His Majesty didn’t answer him, which Rave already anticipated. What happened that year was quite a scandal—and yet it was also the most kept secret in the Empire. It caused a huge uproar before quietly dissipating like smoke, as if it were a nightmare that everyone tried to forget.

Even the last Emperor himself only knew so much, and Spade’s not being informed about it wasn’t unusual for him. And Rave admitted to himself that the organization, even with his years of investigation, never found anything important.

"What do you know about what happened that year?" The deep voice and a natural tone exuded authority rang in the air, solemn, and demanded everyone’s full attention.

Rave couldn’t help but swallow to moisten his slightly dry throat as he clasped his hands tightly together. He might have been maintaining a calm expression on the surface, but his emotions were already tense and surging.

Rave had a lot of thoughts and scenarios running through his head the moment he faced and spoke with the Emperor, and he had already practiced not being nervous in front of the alpha.

However, imagining scenarios was not even twice as terrifying as when they finally happened in reality. Rave’s years of training to hide his true feelings on the outside were crumbling as his defensive mechanism deteriorated with each passing second.

Rave took a deep breath to calm himself; the warmth on his right side also helped. He may not want to acknowledge it, but having someone give him warmth helped to calm him down. It had been so long since someone had given him that warmth, and it had already become unfamiliar to him. Rave didn’t know how to react. For the time being, he would let him succumb to that heat.

"There isn’t much," Rave began again; despite his anxious emotions inside, his voice came out calm, without the slightest tremor. As if the soft tone had become his natural voice, it was gentle and pleasing to the ears.

No one interrupted him, and so Rave continued. He only lowered his head because he didn’t want to meet the Emperor’s gaze. He knew that the moment he did so, all his facades would be seen through. He didn’t like the feeling of someone reading his mind and emotions.

"I was still young when it happened, but I will never forget that night," he continued, his tone becoming distant subconsciously. Everyone only listened to him as he finally started recounting what he knew, and Rave became lost in the memories of his past.

Rave grew up in a Marquis Household, the Amos Family, one of the most distinguished and important noble families in the Empire. However, ever since he was young, Rave was aware that there was something wrong with him than most children at his age.

He was physically weak and often sick in bed, but other than that, he could play as much as he could and still grew up a lively child. In his innocent mind, at the age of five, he finally found out what was wrong with him.

He couldn’t smell pheromones; his scent gland was undeveloped.

Rave was unaware of its significance and how it was already something that both of his parents considered to be their most pressing problem and concern at his age. In a world where scent glands, genes, and pheromones were important for differentiating, Rave could actually be called abnormal and have a disability. He was incomplete; even betas have their scent glands and can smell the faint scent of pheromones, while Rave doesn’t have the ability to.

What worried his parents even more was that when his body finally came of age with differentiating, without his scent glands, his pheromone couldn’t be exuded out of his body and would later be in conflict inside of him. That was the most troublesome thing that could even kill Rave.

Perhaps, if Rave became a beta, there was still a way out. However, that possibility was almost zero; as a child of an omega and an alpha, Rave’s presenting as a beta could only be described as a miracle. And his parents didn’t want to hope for a miracle, so taking action was the only thing they could do.

Rave sensed how his parents became strange and different as the days passed. They were always out, and the only people he could be with were his nannies, and sometimes Rave couldn’t even see his parents for a month.

And his nanny once told him that he shouldn’t worry too much as his parents were only busy and that it was also not unusual. He found out that his parents’ behavior had been like this for about two years now, and the servants in the mansion had grown used to it.

Rave only realized now because he couldn’t before due to his young age. And then one day, when Rave woke up in the middle of the night and finally saw his omega father after a month of absence, he thought his omega father appeared thinner than the last time he saw him.

"Papa?" he called out, still with a sleepy tone.

His papa immediately approached and attended to him; he smiled and picked him up. "Why did my baby wake up? Did you have a nightmare?"

Rave shook his head and buried himself in his Papa’s neck, "I missed you,"

His papa fell silent before he stroked Rave’s back and mumbled in a somewhat exhausted tone, "Don’t worry, Papa and Daddy will be finished soon."

Rave wanted to ask what it was, but Rave was only a child, and with the gentle brushing of his papa on his back, he soon fell asleep once more, so naturally what happened that night was momentarily forgotten.

It went on like this until a year later, when he was six, his parents came home with excited faces. They picked him up, and both seemed eager to do something.

His parents made him drink something; they said it was medicine, and for a month, Rave should drink it without skipping, not even once. After that, his parents were also at home and appeared to be relaxed, especially after one month, when a change in his physique came along with his hair color changing to white.

At first, he was scared, but his parents assured him that it was only a side effect of the medicine. For his parents, Rave’s hair turning white or him becoming almost infertile wasn’t that important compared to them losing their son’s life.

"Papa, you smell good. I want it to eat orange, it smells like you." He blurted one time, and he didn’t know why, but his papa and daddy cried the whole night because of what he said.

He thought that after his parents finished whatever they had become busy with, they could come back to normal and he could be with them once more. However, only two months after he stopped taking medicine and started developing his scent gland, his parents came home more tense than ever.

They seemed to be too exhausted to bother with him, and they often talked together. Rave noticed that each day went by, it looked like they were twice as old as they really were.

"Rave, darling," His papa crouched in front of him while he was doing his homework. Rave stopped, and he couldn’t smile as his papa might have a gentle smile on his lips, but it didn’t seem genuine, and he could only see the tired face of his omega father.

His papa brushed Rave’s white hair as if entranced by it, and after he spoke, something incomprehensible for Rave’s age at that time.

"I never regret anything," he started, "and nothing is more important than you in my life, so, darling... always keep in mind that papa loves you so much." Tears moistened the corner of his eyes, and Rave, becoming worried, wiped them for his father.

"I love you too, papa. Don’t cry," he coaxed; however, his omega father only cried and hugged him.

That night, Rave was also hugged by his dad. He was not crying, but the tight embrace persisted until Rave fell asleep.

Only a day later, chaos finally ensued.

"Faster!" Rave’s papa exclaimed, hugging him on the chest.

Rave could only look into the distance at the frightened screams of the people and the sounds of gunshots. The fire engulfed the mansion, which easily reflected in his eyes.

"Come on," his dad said, and yet the moment he glanced at him when the car stopped, the ferocious gaze in his eyes couldn’t escape Rave’s notice.

Rave fell silent from the start, and his papa awakened him and picked him up without saying anything and appearing hurried. Then the gunfire started in the mansion. He had yet to say anything, not even cry like a normal kid was supposed to do.

His papa looked at him and clasped Rave’s face in his hands.

"Darling, listen to me, when I told you to run, just run, and don’t ever look back. Okay?" His papa gently instructed him to; he couldn’t understand why, but all he could do was nod as if shocked, and words refused to escape his lips.

They came out of the car; it was dark, and the surroundings were still full of trees. Rave couldn’t figure out why his father just kept driving and escaped.

When he grew up, he realized why they couldn’t; it wasn’t because they didn’t want to, but because they truly had no choice. A car was eye-catching, but running and hiding were possible. However, it was only for him; his parents couldn’t. They didn’t have the ability to run.

"Why?" A soft and melodic voice broke the silence and woke Rave from his memories. He raised his gaze and met Arren’s eyes.

Rave almost forgot that he was in front of others, and as he became lost in his memories, he revealed a lot more than he originally intended to. However, he wasn’t someone to overthink things.

He answered Arren, the omega that he was always wary of for some reason.

"They can’t because... the organization would never let them go. I can even hear it from my dreams, my father said...", he paused, Rave’s eyes flashing in a dangerous glint, and remorse overtook him more than his nervousness in front of Spade.

"He saw the leader’s face."
