Chapter 86: Alex Finally Arrives

Aurora shook her head to respond and received a sigh of relief from Josh.

"With my current condition, I can’t attend tomorrow’s birthday party. Could you ask the doctor for assistance? Perhaps they can give me a notice to take a week off to rest?" she said softly, her voice filled with hope.

Josh shrugs, feeling pity for her. "I’m sorry, but I can’t. Boss Alex is already aware that you can go home tomorrow."

Aurora was left speechless.

"You’ve already told him?" she asked in shock, staring him in the eyes. Even without his words, she understood his response, noticing the worry in his eyes.

"For goodness’ sake, Josh! Why on earth did you tell Alex for? You’re digging your own—"

Her words stopped when the door finally swung open, and Alex appeared behind it, staring back at her.

As she gazes into his sharp, deep eyes, which seem to hold a thousand secrets, she experiences a flutter of emotions, feeling as if part of her soul is caught in a gentle struggle.

A wave of nervousness engulfed her, leaving her uncertain about how to react.

"Damn it, Aurora! How could I not call Boss Alex? You were struck on the head and passed out before me! If anything goes wrong during your surgery, Boss Alex will be furious and direct his wrath toward me... You have no idea how terrifying the Boss is when he’s angry." freёnovelkiss.com

Josh can’t help but express his frustration. He is unaware that the person he is talking about is standing behind him, and he fails to notice Aurora’s signal to stop speaking.

’Oh dear, Josh, you’re truly foolish. Now you’re digging your own grave even deeper...’ Aurora vents her frustration toward Josh.

A bit flustered by Alex’s calm gaze, Aurora averted her eyes and concentrated on her hand awkwardly placed on her lap.

"Well, thank you, Josh, I take that as a compliment," a cold, husky tone suddenly echoed from behind, shocking Josh.

A shiver runs down Josh’s spine at Alex’s voice. He quickly gets to his feet and faces Alex, who approaches him with an ease that unsettles him.

"B-Boss..." Struggling to find his words, Josh lowered his gaze while clenching his hand tightly, fully aware of his deep trouble. "B-Boss, you... you finally arrived. I apologize; that’s not how I meant to say it. You... You are the best boss I’ve ever had."

Alex says nothing, merely patting his shoulder lightly, but Josh feels like a weight now hangs there.

"Josh, would you mind waiting for me outside? I need to speak with my wife alone."

Although Alex’s voice remains unchanged, his gaze is no longer directed at Josh but at Aurora.

"Yes, sir." Josh bows slightly and rushes toward the door. He must make a grand plan to prevent his Boss from punishing him.

...

After hearing the door close behind him, Alex stepped closer to the side of the bed.

"How are you feeling?" he asked softly. There was no coldness in his tone like a second ago; now, it was only warmth. It surprised her.

Yet, she still couldn’t lift her head to look at him; she only softly answered, "I’m fine."

Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Alex standing beside the bed, so close to her. Her heart raced with anxiety.

However, when his hand gently lifted her chin to catch her gaze, she couldn’t suppress a small gasp, startled by his unexpected touch.

"Aurora, please don’t turn your gaze away from me when I speak to you," his heavy voice and pleading tone made Aurora feel terrible because she tried to avoid him.

"How’s your head? Are you still experiencing any dizziness or pain?" he asked again, despite having already received her medical report from the doctor; he wanted to hear her thoughts directly.

"No, I don’t feel anything uncomfortable. Alex, I’m really fine," she answered hurriedly—the attention she wasn’t used to receiving swelling and warming her heart.

Alex sat at the edge of the bed, bringing his eyes to her level. A faint smile graced his lips, but Aurora could see the worry in his eyes.

"Please promise me you will never hurt yourself again, Aurora."

His unwavering attention made Aurora blush.

"Mmm, I will. Alex, I’m sorry for making you rush to this city when you’re supposed to be busy in the capital." She sincerely expressed her thoughts.

Although she didn’t like today’s incident, she is happy to see how gentle Alex is.

She knows this incident might make Alex no longer act cold toward her. He might soften and warm up to her from now on, and that’s enough for her. At least she can still stay in his house comfortably without feeling depressed.

Nevertheless, her happiness and hope scrambled hearing Alex’s following words.

"I forgive you. But how could you cause trouble after arriving in this city? What were you thinking?" his expression abruptly darkened.

His icy voice left Aurora feeling like her entire body had become frozen by ice-cold wind.

Aurora tried to express herself, but he interrupted her, saying, "I have told you before that you should have Josh by your side. Why are you so stubborn in refusing to let him guard you?"

Their eyes remained locked on each other, but no words escaped Aurora’s lips. She could only express her frustration internally, realizing she had been wrong to believe this man had changed to be kind and care for her.

Earlier, for a slight moment, she believed Alex was concerned about her condition, but this man did not feel the same way.

"I’m sorry..." were the only words that came to her now.

She felt drained from their conversation for reasons she couldn’t grasp. Was her disappointment due to her high expectations of him? She just couldn’t find the answer.

Alex inhaled deeply and looked away to escape her sorrowful expression.

"No need to apologize. But you need to take care of yourself. Don’t let yourself have an accident and get hurt or worse, lose your life," he said without seeing her.

"Alex, why do you seem annoyed if I die?" she asked, a bit puzzled. Instead of being sad, this man appeared angry to her.

Alex turns to see her with his icy gaze.

"If you unexpectedly die before our contract ends, I will have to waste much more valuable time to find your replacement. So, listen to me carefully. Please don’t cause any trouble until our agreement is over!"

Her fists clenched in anger. His words stabbed at her heart like a dagger. No words could express the depth of her heartache.
