Chapter 67: A Show of Strength

As we spent our entire day searching for the Kraken, we got pretty frustrated at the fact that the sun was already setting, and we didn’t have a clue where it could be.

My theory was that the monster was so deep in the ocean that our "search" spell wasn’t reaching it. But getting too close to the water could be pretty dangerous since we heard the monster could attack suddenly and quickly.

Now that the sun was setting, all we could do was go back to the city.

When we landed on the pier, we saw the commander of the 2nd order approaching us, saying that the rumors were true and that the princess could truly fly.

Melina smiled. "Well, it’s all thanks to Ichiro!" she said with no discomfort.

"I see. But you guys should know it’s dangerous to be around that area. Were you looking for the Kraken?" said the commander.

The princess nodded. "We were scouting the area but couldn’t find it."

The blonde man glanced at me with a stern expression.

("Now, what did I do!?") I thought. Since every single knight commander I’ve met was always a goddamn jerk.

"Am I to believe that you would protect the princess from harm?" he asked me.

"Sure, I would. But the princess can easily protect herself, commander..." I responded.

"Hah, how insolent! To think that a commoner kid could protect a princess better than a knight!" the man exclaimed.

"Do you really think your knights are strong?" I asked.

The man’s expression turned furious, and pointed his finger at me. "Show me then, boy!" he yelled, making the princess put an exasperated face as she also seemed tired of this.

The commander took us to the barracks, and in the back courtyard, they had a stone combat platform surrounded by grass.

Nighttime had fallen in the city, and the knights from the 2nd and 7th orders were gathered around, saying that Commander Garret was going to spar with the princess’s protector.

I also noticed Commander Valentina in the crowd, who sat at the back without talking to anyone, simply waiting for the match to begin.

I stood in the center of the platform holding my bo and leaning into it with boredom when Garret finally arrived.

He wore only his plated legs and sword, showing a strong body with a few scars on the arms.

The commander raised his hand, making his knights cheer in admiration as he got up on the platform.

("Does he think this is a wrestling match or something?") I thought as I felt the whole scene was pretty ridiculous.

"Boy, I told you to grab any weapon you wanted from the armory. Are you trying to mock me?" he asked, noticing my weapon was not what he expected.

"A stick!? Really!?" he exclaimed.

His knights laughed, and I noticed that the people from the 7th order remained silent. I supposed it was because they had seen me fight before, so they didn’t doubt my abilities like the others.

"Can we end this fast? I wanna go to bed..." I said before yawning in the middle of the arena.

The commander started fuming and calling me an insolent boy, but all I did was pick my ears and look to the side with disinterest. Although, honestly, I was doing it on purpose just to piss him off more.

One of the knights stood close to the platform, raised his arm in the air, and dropped it as he yelled for the match to begin.

As soon as it started, Garret launched himself at me with a deranged smile, raising his sword in the air, ready to strike.

However, I quickly moved to the side and deflected his sword with my bo, making him continue in a straight line and stopping right before falling off the platform into the grass.

The man turned, his expression angrier than before, and began slashing the air, trying to target me, but all of his movements felt extremely slow.

As I avoided all of his attacks by simply moving slightly to the sides, I heard the knights on the sidelines talking.

"Why is the commander playing around?" said one of them

"Maybe he is just trying to show off how much stronger he is!"

"Yeah! That must be it!"

However, these guys were clueless about the fact that their commander was giving it his all to land a strike on me.

Feeling like it had been long enough, I raised my bo and stopped one of the dozens of attacks that the commander threw at me, stopping his movement completely.

"How can a mere stick stop my sword?" he asked as he applied more force to his sword, but my bo didn’t even chip.

Truthfully, if I had been using a regular bo, then it would have broken a long time ago.

It was thanks to the fact that my bo was made from the redwood tree in the forest, the second sturdiest wood in the world.

Reflecting his sword back and making the commander lose his balance, I kicked him in the chest without much force and dropped him on his back.

The commander stood up quickly, grasping his sword and launching himself at me again.

At that point, the knights that were cheering on their commander quieted down as they finally realized that he was struggling to hit me.

With one last desperate strike, I stopped him again in his tracks with my bo and kicked him in the chest once more, this time applying more force, sending him out of the platform, sliding through the grass, and crashing on the wall next to the spectators.

The rest of the knights stayed silent with perplexed expressions as they saw their commander leaning his back against the wall in defeat.

I took a healing potion out of my void pocket and gave it to one of the knights to treat the commander while I returned to my group, who had been watching the entire thing.

Melina had asked me before the fight to take it easy on the commander, and I thought I had done a pretty good job.

The kick I gave him definitely hurt him, and I made sure not to break any bones. I even gave him a potion so that he would be fine the next day.

When I returned, she smiled and hugged me, saying she expected me to mess him up even more.

"I have self-control, you know?" I said, making her laugh and warming my heart a little.

("Maybe fighting the guy wasn’t so bad since I got to see her smiling like that in the end...") I thought.

While we joked around, I saw Commander Valentina leaving the area and returning to the barracks. But I couldn’t see her expression, so I couldn’t tell what she was thinking.

After the knights took their commander inside, we left the place and went back to the inn.

__________

The following day, our plan was the same. Wake up, eat, and scout for the monster.

Arriving at the pier, we noticed the sky was a little cloudier than before, but the day was bright nonetheless.

"Let’s try splitting up more and cover a wider area..." I said to both Melina and Vespera.

"If you do find something, come back to the pier, and we will all go together, alright?" I continued.

The plan was to find it first and then kill it. However, we hadn’t seen the monster yet, so I didn’t have a clear idea of how strong it would be.

Since I didn’t want to put Melina in needless danger, I thought my plan was the best for this situation.

Taking into the skies again, the three of us split in different directions while using our "search" spell to look for the monster.

This time, I got closer to the water until I was almost at its level. I figured that if the Kraken was going deeper, then the closer I was to the water, the better chances I would have of locating it.

However, I still couldn’t find anything with my "search" spell spanning hundreds of meters around me.

I sighed. "I guess I’ll have to get closer..." I said to myself before casting a spell that mixed water and air magic and surrounded the bottom part of my face with a bubble.

Diving into the ocean with the bubble allowing me to breathe, I used air magic to propel myself as I went deeper to use my "search" spell again.

After a few minutes, I still couldn’t find anything, and going deeper could be more dangerous than expected. However, just as I was about to propel myself up out of the water, I sensed something massive moving under.

Even then, my "search" spell didn’t show me anything. The feeling was all intuition and not magic related.

I looked down and tried to adjust my vision, but the deep water was too dark to discern anything.
