My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World-Chapter 66: Port Town Blue
Chapter 66: Port Town Blue
After accepting the guild’s request, we left the building and began walking around town to distribute food and potions to the people.
No matter how pretty the city was, seeing people sitting on the sides of the street starving wasn’t something I could simply overlook, especially not when I had the means to help them.
As we walked through the city helping people, we found ourselves next to the knights’ barracks, and knowing that they had been struggling too, we went inside to leave some food and potions for them.
I told Vespera and Yoru to keep distributing resources to the people while Melina and I talked to the knights, and they agreed.
As we walked through the gate, the few knights that were in the courtyard bowed to the princess until we reached the main door.
The knights looked exhausted and out of shape. They looked worse than the 4th order when they first arrived in End Town.
Inside, we were greeted by the commander of the 2nd order, who was the one stationed at Port Town Blue, and the commander of the 7th was also there.
The commander of the 2nd was a tall blonde man named Garret Rowley, and after seeing the princess, he bowed in unison with Valentina, the commander of the 7th, and gave us a smile that seemed genuine, but I could tell it was fake.
Melina told the commander that we were distributing aid to the people and that we were leaving some resources for them too.
The man, not declining the offer, bowed again to thank her. However, Melina reproached him, saying that the one they needed to thank was me.
"Huh?" I said as I arched my eyebrow and looked at the princess.
She explained that it was thanks to me that we managed to gather so many resources to share. And while there was some truth to that statement, the princess had also worked hard to gather all those things.
Reluctantly, both commanders lowered their heads toward me, which made me feel quite uncomfortable, so I told them to raise their heads as I felt somewhat embarrassed.
After leaving a good amount of potions and rations for the knights, we left the barracks and met up with my companions to keep exploring the city while handing out goods.
Eventually, we found ourselves in front of the duke’s mansion, where Melina said she wanted to talk to him for a moment, and approached the guards at the gate.
After one of the guards ran inside the mansion quickly to tell the lord that the princess had come to visit, we waited outside for a few minutes.
"What kind of person is this duke?" I asked, knowing that most nobles weren’t exactly the best of people.
"He has always been pretty nice. I only saw him whenever he visited my parents in the capital, but he always treated me well..." she responded.
"I just wanna ask him more details about that Kraken..." she continued.
If Melina trusted the duke, then I didn’t see a reason for me not to since I knew she was a pretty good judge of character. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
The guard arrived with a butler who escorted us inside the mansion and took us to a living room where the duke was already waiting for us.
Yoru was hiding in my shadow, so it was only Melina, Vespera, and I.
"Princess Melina, it’s so good to see you!" he exclaimed as he stood up from his seat and bowed his head.
The princess introduced us. The duke’s name was Mitchell Razz, and he had long brown hair and a somewhat burly body.
With a friendly expression, the man shook my hand and thanked me for delivering so many goods to them, then asked me if there was anything he could do for us in return.
However, all we wanted to know was more details about the monster. But before he did that, he gave me a little bit of context about himself.
Duke Mitchell used to be a sailor, which explained his body build as he seemed much more combat adept than the nobles I saw at the capital.
His deeds on the sea brought him to meet the king long ago, and they became good friends until, eventually, the king assigned him as the Duke of Port Town Blue.
Of course, he was happy to do it. His time on the sea was over, and being able to live peacefully in a seaside town as beautiful as this was like a dream to him.
Right by the end of last winter, the monster attacked one of their fishing vessels, losing the entire ship and the lives of their men.
The duke said that the attack was visible from the pier, and when he saw the giant tentacles reaching for the ship, he knew exactly what it was.
For the sailors, the Kraken was something like their fabled nemesis—the monster they would never want to encounter while out on the sea.
He said that back in those days, many people believed that the Kraken was just a myth, but others swore they had seen it.
When the duke was a young sailor, during one of his first expeditions, they found themselves face-to-face with a Kraken. However, the monster at that time was not nearly as massive as the one he was attacking from the pier.
Using the canons, spears, and magic, they managed to escape from the monster and made it back safely to the kingdom, where they reported the appearance of the Kraken. Nevertheless, it was never seen again after that encounter.
"Until now..." he said as he finished his story.
"So, do you think this is the same Kraken you saw when you were a kid?" I asked.
The man nodded. "I truly think so... It’s been about 30 years. That’s enough time for that monster to grow to that size..."
As I thought about his story, it was entirely possible that this was the same monster. Considering they could grow and evolve, like the black dragon serpent, it wasn’t a far-fetched idea.
The duke asked us if we really planned on fighting the Kraken, to which we confirmed it with determination.
He told us that they were planning a big-scale attack in four days and were using the biggest and strongest vessels they had, along with the knights and adventurers that wanted to volunteer.
The thing was that we didn’t really want them to do that. If the monster could take an entire boat with one tentacle, then there was a big chance that the fight would turn into a massacre.
We still agreed to go, but as Melina and I glanced at each other, we both had another idea in mind.
The duke said they would attack in four days, meaning that we had four days to hunt the Kraken ourselves and not endanger anyone else.
After our talk, he asked us to stay with him in the mansion. However, the princess didn’t want to attract too much attention, hence why we were wearing our hoods, so we stayed at the inn.
The inn was completely full when we got there, so we couldn’t reserve two rooms. Instead, they only had one room with two beds available.
I told Melina that we could camp out and make a small house for the night, but she said that the one room should be no problem and paid for it.
Yoru shared the bed with me that night, and Vespera shared it with Melina. Strangely enough, it was one of the few times that we all saw the queen demon spider sleeping.
("It’s always such a rare sight...") I thought as we all stopped staring at Vespera and decided to rest for the night.
__________
The following day, we had breakfast in our room and prepared ourselves to scout the sea around the city.
The day was clear and warm, which just made it perfect as the water would be more transparent.
("Surely we’ll be able to find it when it’s so bright out here...") I thought as the group stared at the sea from the pier.
"Let’s try flying around the coast first and use our ’search’ spell..." I said as I stretched my arms.
"I’m actually kind of excited. I’ve never seen a Kraken before..." said Vespera
[I wonder how it tastes...] said Yoru with telepathy.
"Of course, you guys are thinking about food..." I said with a smile.
("Well, to be fair, the black dragon serpent was pretty tasty, so this Kraken could definitely be a delicacy...") I thought as my mind trailed off completely off-topic.
Now that we had our ponchos ready and Yoru was hiding in my shadow, we took flight and began scouting the city’s coast.
Using our ’search’ spell wasn’t helping us at all, as we couldn’t see anything on the water that was a real threat. But if the monster was as big as they said, there was no chance for it to hide for long.
