My Wife and I Became Sages in Another World-Chapter 68: An Eerie Feeling
Chapter 68: An Eerie Feeling
While searching the bottom of the sea, I felt a strange presence that my "search" spell wasn’t picking up.
It was such an eerie feeling, part of me wanted to know what it was, and the other part of me was telling me to run away. I decided to do the latter and look for the others before venturing deeper.
I propelled myself out of the water and into the air, then used a mix of air and fire magic to produce a warm wind around me and dry my clothes.
When flying toward the pier, I saw both Vespera and Melina arriving. While discussing our findings with each other, it turned out that both of them had the same dangerous idea as me and went into the water to search closer.
I sighed, knowing that if any of them had gotten into a fight with the Kraken, it could have ended badly.
("Maybe we shouldn’t split up next time...") I thought.
However, when I asked if they had seen something, they both answered in the negative.
"Well, I did feel something, but my ’search’ spell wasn’t picking it up..." I said, explaining to them the eerie feeling that I could sense deeper in the water.
Melina seemed confused at my explanation, but Vespera nodded silently and with a serious expression, which conflicted with her usual nonchalant attitude.
"Do you know something about that, Vespera?" I asked.
"I’ve felt that sensation a few times before in my life... I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but the way you describe it sounds similar to a devil’s aura..." she explained.
From what she told us, people with a high density of MP could sense a devil’s aura. However, since the magic of the demons fed from human negative emotions, our type of magic couldn’t recognize it.
"So, you are saying there is a devil under the sea?" I asked.
"It’s possible... Although, it’s also possible that the devil is simply giving the Kraken its power. That monster is already a creation of the demons, so it wouldn’t be strange for them to nurture it..." explained Vespera.
I remembered that a few years ago, when I fought the Goblin King, the stupid monster did mention something about receiving power from a devil, but I never thought too much about it.
"Let’s be even more careful from now on, okay?" I said to the group, knowing that this could genuinely turn out to be a bigger deal than we thought.
We had taken down S-ranked monsters before. However, Vespera did tell us that even on that level, one S-ranked monster could be exponentially more powerful than the other.
("Maybe they should come up with an SS rank or something...") I thought before focusing on the conversation again.
"We should assume this Kraken is the most powerful monster we have seen then..." said Melina as she looked deep in her thoughts.
"We only have until tomorrow to find it and kill it. Else, the duke’s mission will happen..." I explained. frёeωebɳovel.com
The duke wanted to send big and armored vessels filled with knights and adventurers to fight the Kraken and open his sea routes again.
I could understand the desperation, to be honest. The city was basically surrounded by monsters every day, cutting their communication and trade while slowly killing the residents.
As the sun was starting to set for the day, we walked around the city, still helping people by giving them potions and food that we had in our void pockets.
We went around wearing the hoodie from our ponchos so that people wouldn’t recognize us. Well, more like they wouldn’t recognize the princess.
People around the kingdom knew of my name because of my potions, but not everyone knew what I looked like, and I kind of liked it that way.
At one point, I heard the murmurs of some people in an alleyway talking about the two hooded saints that were walking around the city helping people.
("Saints!? That’s a new one...") I thought as I heard the rumors and kept walking.
When night arrived, we went to the inn and found sub-commander Harvey with two other knights from the 4th order hanging out at the bar counter.
"Harvey? What are you guys doing here?" I asked, as the last time I saw them was back in End Town.
"We were sent a letter by the king to come help. Commander Thomas said that just us would be enough," said Harvey with a confident tone.
The knights of the 4th order were on a completely different level from when I first met them. In fact, I was sure that even the most rookie knight from the 4th could beat any of the commanders of the others.
I knew because I used to spar with these guys during their training, and I could say for sure that most of them gave me a harder time than the commander of the 2nd, which I had beaten just a day before.
The two knights that were with him were some of the senior knights, which were some of the strongest in the whole order.
"We were supposed to arrive tomorrow, but we managed to cut our trip short by a little..." said Harvey.
He told us that on their way to Port Town Blue, they found another monster attack in the outskirts and helped the adventurers that were facing them, just like it happened to us.
"What’s up with all these monsters trying to isolate the town?" I asked.
Vespera turned. "A devil..." she said with a serious expression.
My spider companion always acted aloof and calm. She was strong enough to defend herself against pretty much everything that stood against her.
She said so herself, the only beings in the world that could compete against her strength were other legendary beasts. However, she also acted extremely cautious when talking about devils.
We told Harvey that we had been scouting the ocean looking for the monster and the eerie feeling I had when I dived into the sea.
"If we don’t find it tomorrow, the duke will go into action..." I said.
Harvey seemed somewhat shaken. He had heard stories about devils and how one even managed to topple an entire country, but he never believed he would be so close to one.
The knights of the 4th needed to go to the barracks the next day, and they were only staying at the inn for that night since they had arrived much earlier than expected.
Out of mere curiosity, I told them that we would accompany them to the barracks in the morning before going scouting.
He arched his brow with confusion, but there was no real reason for me to want to go other than to see the reactions of the other knights when they saw how strong these guys were now.
I giggled and rubbed my hands like a supervillain, making Harvey even more confused.
However, Melina knew precisely what I was thinking. "I think he just wants to show off your training," she said with a smile.
After talking for a little longer, we went to sleep.

The next day, after having breakfast in our room, we met with the three knights who were already waiting outside the inn and made our way to the barracks.
When we arrived, we saw some of the knights from the 7th and 2nd order sparring in the courtyard, although their movements were shaky and mediocre.
("These guys won’t last a minute against the Kraken...") I thought.
Inside the building, both commanders and their subcommanders waited for Harvey’s arrival. Their expressions were disgruntled as we entered the hall.
"Sub-commander Harvey Tennet. We are here to carry on your orders to help against the Kraken," he said while placing his hand on his chest.
"What the hell is this!? Three knights!?" exclaimed Garrett, the commander of the 2nd.
"And it’s three knights from the 4th. They are basically mocking us..." said his sub-commander, whose name I didn’t know or care for.
Commander Valentina stayed silent, her expression stern but not angry.
("Can she tell that these guys are on another level than them?") I thought as I stared at Valentina.
"I can assure you we are not mocking you, Sir. We are here to help in the fight," said Harvey, his voice and eyes determined.
Garret scoffed and turned his back on them while returning to his chambers, leaving Valentina and her subcommander in the room with us.
"I look forward to working with you," she said coldly before turning around and leaving the room.
As we were leaving the barracks with the knights, a great idea popped into my head.
"Vespera!" I exclaimed, startling my companion for a moment.
"Can you add that gravity enchantment to the knights’ armor? The one you used for our ponchos," I asked, stars sparkling in my eyes.
"Yeah, it should be possible. It took me a little bit of time to put it on yours, but now that I’ve done it a few times, I think I can manage," she said
Once again, I rubbed my hands and laughed like a supervillain.
