Chapter 171: Simple Errands, Simple Life ( 171 )
"Ah, welcome, mister human!" the shopkeeper—a stout beastkin woman with a lively grin and a measuring tape around her neck—called out the moment Hazuki stepped in.
"Need clothes? Pants? My shop has the best selection for adventurers like you! Prices from 30 copper to one gold coin! Please, come in and take a look!"
Hazuki stepped inside and eyed the racks and folded stacks with mild curiosity. Ridan hovered near the ceiling, already circling the shop like a curious bat.
"Hmm... alright, I’ll check it," Hazuki said as he scanned the goods. "Got anything for an adventurer?"
"Ah~ of course! How about this?" The shopkeeper held up a leather pair of pants, a short cotton inner pant for comfort, a light long-sleeve shirt, and a leather armor vest. "Light and flexible!"
"Uh... no thanks. I don’t like armor. It just gets in the way when I’m moving around."
"Understandable, mister customer!" she nodded with a knowing smile. "Then just clothes and pants?"
"And... maybe a pair of leather shoes too," Hazuki added, glancing down at his worn-out boots.
"Excellent choice! Let me show you some options that match your size."
Hazuki looked toward Ridan, who was now floating in slow circles around the shopkeeper like a perverted orbit.
"Nice boobs you got there, lady! Big melon~ OHHHH!! It’s jingling! Boing boing!" Ridan shouted happily, exaggerating the bounce of his words.
Hazuki sighed and shook his head. "I seriously need a spirit filter..."
He turned back to the shelves and spotted a sturdy pair of leather boots.
"Hmm... this one looks nice." He crouched down, slipped off his worn-out shoes—ones that had clearly seen too many miles—and tried on the new boots.
They fit snugly, and the inside padding felt... actually pretty comfortable.
Ridan floated behind him and whispered dramatically, "Ohhh~ look at you. New bag, new boots. Who’s this fancy man?"
"Shut it," Hazuki muttered without looking up.
"Oh, mister human?" the shopkeeper called out as she noticed Hazuki examining the boots. "Found something good?"
"Yeah... these boots feel nice. How much are they?" Hazuki asked, flexing his feet in them.
"Ah, since they’re made of leather and the soles are reinforced for long travel, that pair costs 95 silver coins."
"Wha!?" Hazuki nearly choked, standing up straight in shock.
Ridan immediately started circling him like a fly with a megaphone, shouting gleefully, "Buy buy buy buy buy!! From this jingling melon lady! Buyyyy!"
Hazuki gritted his teeth. "Ugh..."
He turned back to the shopkeeper. "Ermm... can we make it 90?"
She gave a polite but firm shake of her head. "Ah... sorry, mister customer. But how about this? You choose a pair of pants and a shirt, and together with the boots, I’ll give you all of it for 1 gold coin."
Hazuki quickly did some mental math, sighed, and nodded. "Okay. Deal."
"Wonderful~ Please, pick any shirt and pants you like from this section!"
Ridan pumped his cloudy fist. "New boots, fresh clothes... now you just need a bath, and you might finally look like a functioning adult!"
Hazuki rolled his eyes and ignored him completely, scanning the racks before finally choosing a dark brown shirt and a pair of deep gray pants that looked sturdy but comfortable.
"Alright. I’ll take this one, lady."
The shopkeeper nodded with a pleased smile. "Good eye you have there, mister human. Would you like to wear it now?"
"Oh yes, please." Hazuki didn’t even hesitate. Anything to stop looking like someone who rolled out of a monster’s cave.
She pointed toward a small changing area curtained off in the corner. "You can change in that room there."
"Thank you, lady." Hazuki nodded and walked over.
Ridan floated nearby, snickering. "Ohoho~ wardrobe upgrade unlocked. Let’s see if it adds +1 to your charm. Actually, never mind—nothing can save that face."
"Shut up, pervert spirit," Hazuki grumbled silently.
Ridan cackled somewhere above, clearly enjoying the mental back-and-forth. "I heard that~ and I’m still not wrong!"
Hazuki ignored him and handed over a small pouch. "Here."
"Let me count it first." The beastkin lady smiled warmly as she began counting the 100 silver coins on the counter. Meanwhile, Hazuki glanced around the shop, eyes scanning for anything else useful—maybe something small, like gloves or a utility belt—but nothing really caught his attention.
A moment later, the shopkeeper looked up. "Alright, mister human. Thank you for shopping in my shop. Is there anything else you need?"
Hazuki shook his head. "Ah, no. That’s all of it. Thank you."
"You’re welcome~" she said with a polite bow.
Ridan twirled above Hazuki like a satisfied customer who bought nothing but still commented on everything. "Now that you’re dressed like a real adventurer, maybe people will stop calling you crazy guy."
"Let’s go to that laundry shop next door before you forget, you walking dirt magnet," Ridan floated ahead like a smug guide.
"Okay, okay... jeez, annoying spirit," Hazuki muttered as he adjusted his new bag and followed.
Ridan spun once more in mid-air. "That’s what I’m here for. Navigation, insults, and emotional damage—full package!"
"Remind me to banish you one day," Hazuki muttered, though the corner of his mouth almost curled into a smile.
They stepped toward the laundry shop, the sign gently swinging above the door as the scent of soap and fresh cloth wafted through the air.
Hazuki stepped into the laundry shop, the faint scent of soap and warm cloth in the air. Without wasting time, he walked straight to the counter and placed his bundled clothes on it.
"I’d like to wash these clothes."
The beastkin woman behind the counter gave him a welcoming smile, then tilted her head curiously as she examined the bundle.
"Alright, mister customer. Since you’ve got a pair of pants, a shirt, and... umm... these weird clothes..." She held up the slacks and button-up shirt with a puzzled expression. "I’ve never seen this type before."
Hazuki scratched his cheek awkwardly. "Ah... long story."
"Mhm. Well, the total for washing all of these will be about 20 copper coins."
"Okay, deal." Hazuki smiled and handed over 30 copper coins.
The woman blinked. "Umm... mister, it’s just 20 copper."
"The extra 10 copper is for you."
"F-For real?" Her eyes widened.
"Yeah. Wash it well and dry it fast."
She puffed up proudly. "T-Thank you! I’ll take care of it myself!"
"That’s the spirit!" Hazuki grinned.
"Oh, by the way..." she added, still excited.
"Yeah?"
"Drying won’t take long. Wind magic will have it done in minutes. The hand washing takes a bit more time. Why not go grab a meal while you wait?"
"Sounds good. Thanks, lady."
He nodded and turned to leave, already thinking about what kind of food to get.
