Arc 2, Chapter 87 —Transformation

Pop.
A sharp sound cut through the air like a gunshot. It was a blown out bubblegum that exploded against Shugo’s lips.
Heh.
Things just keep getting curiouser and curiouser by the day. Shugo’s grin widened into a feral arc when looking ahead. "Well now, isn’t this a lovely surprise."
As he spoke, the Shard Fork he unleashed shimmered ominous, growing unhurriedly. Others had different expressions while also unleashing their shards.
Why?
Because the moment the doors fully swung open, the world beyond was no longer the familiar simple gardens and inner courtyards they had grown accustomed to seeing.
Could the change be triggered by the door’s opening after Lights Out? Many concluded it to be so.
Take a good hard look around.
Everything they were used to seeing at daytime, as well as night time through the windows, has now changed.
It was transformed into a grotesque jungle of writing plants and twisted shadows that seemed to come alive with malevolent intent.
Then there was that chilling sensation that pricked their skin. The air itself felt charged with excitement.
"Can you feel it?" Shugo whispered to no one in particular, his grin widening as he inhaled deeply. "The winds are calling unto me for a good challenge."
Grawwwlll~
What was that?
Some weaker Bloodrens jerks back, looking around cautiously.
That was the guttural sound coming from the plants that sensed their presence.
Spinning her Card Shard effortlessly between her fingers like a magician, Yimu let out a swift chuckle. "It seems the doors weren’t made so strong to keep us in... but to protect us instead."
But who said anything about needing protection? It was hard to hide the predatory excitement gleaming in her eyes.
"Wait," Hendrix interjected, before the group could take off. "My guess is that the doors can only be opened from the inside after Lights Out..."
In other words, someone will need to stand at the doors to keep them open.
"Don’t mind me, you guys go on." One of the Bloodrens volunteered, stepping forward with his arms crossed defiantly over his chest. "What? I already have 13 months worth of punishment up my ass, so you ding bloody well expect me to take another rush, do you?"
Despite wanting to find a way out of this caged place, the man was self-conscious enough to know that as of now, he had racked up the highest punishment time in the entire group. freewebnoveℓ.com
Others had 4, 7, 9 months to serve, but he had an entire 13 MONTHS!
"Sorry folks, but I ain’t gonna risk it, and can’t afford to take on any more punishments right now."
He stood at the door, crossing his arms like an immovable boulder. No matter the rains, storms, tsunamis and floods that come, he will not move!
Everyone only gave him a brief glance, saying nothing more.
This wasn’t the time for arguments or division. Many shrugged, unbothered by the man’s volunteerism.
Before them stretched a seemingly endless expanse of overgrown plants that soared over 12 feet tall or more.
Why did the land enclosed within the walls suddenly look 2 times bigger than it used to be?
Perhaps because of the sudden change in plants, and their density growth, it made the place look like a jungle.
"If we’re going to do this, we can’t act as loners."
"That’s right, everyone must have everyone’s back. It’s the only way we’re going to succeed."
Rolo and Leo added, and many subconsciously nodded in agreement.
Despite their inherent selfishness and lone-wolf tendencies, even the most cynical among them nodded in agreement—albeit reluctantly.
Nevertheless.... Deep down, they still knew some people would inevitably be sacrificed as pawns.

One... Two... Three...
Ready... set... Go!
Kicking their feet, they moved cautiously into hostile terrain without orders.
It was as though they were linked telepathically.
Graaaaa~
That was the sound of these plants squirming after having their leafy tentacles and sharp claws viciously cut off.
What the?
Levon and Rayna quickly realized that the ground beneath their feet was far from stable.
—And in a flash, Rayna enlarged her massive Anchor Shard seconds before a hot black tarry substance spewed out from underneath.
Blahhh!~
Levon’s heart skipped a beat after barely making it into Rayna’s anchor.
Looking around, several people had already abandoned their grounds, using their Shard’s to fly about the place.
Pouf! Pouf! Pouf!~
Hot boiling tar shot out in countless locations.
One drop fell on Levon’s clothes, burning through it like lava.
This is insane!
What plant shoots out hot boiling tar?
Countless plant giant petals popped out from the grounds. And at their center, the tar was spat out.
"I don’t think it’s safe to run again!" Levon advised, using his Katana to slice and dice through the maze they now found themselves in.
It wasn’t just him, as everyone else used weapons to attack the many tentacles coming their way.
Some people used their shards for transportation, swishing and digging, while others they carried were tasked with battle.
Hyah! Hyah! Hyah!
They sliced and diced, but soon noticed something colossally wrong.
"Everyone, stop slicing!" Hendrix bellowed, seeing that now, there were over 300 snake-like tentacles surrounding them all.
It’s like a Hydra!
The tentacles they slice, the more will pop up.
If they sliced one head, and 3 would grow back stronger than ever.
Dammit!
Everyone began talking with one another, blocking and attacking as best as they could.
"This isn’t working!"
"You think? Tell us something we don’t know!"
"Dammit! My fists are getting sore from punching these sons of bitches to death. Again, why can’t we just fly over them and consequently over the walls too?"
"FOOL, don’t even think about it!" Yimu lashed out, before planting her shoes on one of the tentacles that tried to grab her left ankle. "Don’t you have any brains at all. Look at the skies above carefully. Every time one of these tentacles respawns into a taller version, it gets sliced cleanly if it tries to go above THAT Threshold."
Levon squinted his eyes deeply. She was right.
There’s... There’s an invisible barrier above the estate...
This can only mean there’s a deadly invisible force that will slice them into half if they dared fly higher!
