Arc 2, Chapter 77 — Endless Possibilities

.

.

Another day, another battle.

Today started off as usual... but many knew it would mark the true beginnings of what was to come.

—Phase 1!

How can they not be nervous?

In the classroom, Levon furrowed his brow, getting increasingly annoyed by the slumbering sounds in his ears.

Morning, afternoon, evening, night... it was there.

’I’ll deal with that guy some other time,’ he advised himself, focusing on Winhest’s emerging silhouette.

There was just something about Winhest’s unhinged aura that allowed everyone to sit upright.

That face...

"I bet my lunch that someone has ticked him off." Leo mused.

Their dear Instructor’s smile looked good-natured, yet it was laced with an unhinged feeling that made them flinch.

"The deadline for group submission is up." Winhest announced, jumping right into it without his usual snarky comments.

Alright, he must be REALLY pissed.

It was clear as day that someone had made their Instructor furious... so furious he now became a ticking time bomb.

Who knows when he would explode in their faces?

"As per the rules," Winhest expressionlessly continued. "Those without groups will be bundled together."

’I see.’ Levon nodded.

The disadvantage of being without a group and being bundled together, should be that you might be stuck with a group that was considered to be the lowest of the low (in your eyes).

Just a single glance across the space can tell who was in a group and who wasn’t.

Floriana, Rita and Yimu, had recruited 2 other girls, making a team of 5.

One of these girls had an overly thin malnourished looking body.

Make no mistake, that was just how she looked.

She looked like a ghost, with her overly long hair, pale white skin, and body structure. Yet, she was beautiful, nonetheless.

In addition to her beauty, she had a thick green peacock Haori she wore over her uniform.

One should never mistake a Haori for a Kimono. A Haori was a light jacket styled wear, worn over a Kimono. Hers was an elegant peacock style.

—She never went anywhere without that Peacock Haori.

Despite her malnourished appearance, she wore a vibrant ginger lipstick to showcase just how ghostly white her skin truly was.

Natalia Amborgina. That was her name.

The other girl was quite chubby and overly large, with a large pot belly.

She was also a beauty, despite how thick her cheeks were with fat.

Eh?

Levon and many blinked in confusion.

Hang on, didn’t they see a thinner version of herself a few days ago?

Rolo Marmillia.

They say her appetite could even rival Artilla’s.

Even before getting familiar with this place, those who knew her earlier, wore she had the natural knack for turning herself slim in a matter of days after heating a whole cow load of food.

She might look big now, but by tomorrow–

WHAT? Everyone was dumbfounded.

When did she already turn slim again? Was this a magic trick or something?

They swore they only blinked once and she had already transformed from a chubby porky girl into a slender beauty.

Rolo had a more beige tanned skin, and incredibly thin lips.

.

.

Food girl Rolo and Peacock girl Natalia... These 2 added to Floriana’s team, forming 5.

Hendrix and Payne, also added 4 more people to their team, forming 6.

Some people formed teams of 5, some 6, and some 9. Everyone was more or less settled in, except for a few.

Winhest flicked his fingers and severe sheets appeared on the desk behind him.

"One person from each group will step forth and write the names of your members. However—" Winhest paused, sweeping his deep-set eyes at them. "Some of you have already hailed yourselves as the leader of your groups... None of you are my precious students who evaded punishment. what makes you think you’re better than the others in your team?"

Winhest scoffed ruthlessly.

Of course, the precious students he compared them to were Victorio and his gang.

Those guys had proven themselves worthy of his attention, and kept proving it time after time since he began teaching them advanced matters.

In the outside world, if a student has a sharp edge to him, a teacher would definitely think of blunting the sharp edges to make the student more acceptable tino society.

However, Winhest had the urge to keep these edges sharp, making them even deadlier than before.

As for Levon and everyone else, he stared at them subtly.

Disappointment? No.

There was no such emotion in his glassy pupils... it was like he was staring at nothingness.

"Let’s make something clear. Once in a while, some of you do excite me. However... In my eyes, you’re all the same... at least, not until you’ve gone through Phase one—your first Bloodren 10 Competition."

’The first competition?’ Levon’s heart jerked uncontrollably with excitement.

The air thickened, with everyone leaning forward. The rush of adrenaline coursing through their veins was electric.

Despite Winhest’s brief introduction, they understood that this was a major turning point as Bloodren 10s.

"The Bloodren competitions will be divided into 2 phases. Phase 1 is a battle competition." Winhest explained. "And for Phase 2, that will take place 2 and a half months after Phase 1."

"However," Winhest paused, his eyes glowing meaningfully. "I must let you know that If you FAIL Phase 1, you won’t have a chance to begin phase 2.... You’ll have to wait an entire year to repeat Phaser 1 and 2 again."

In other words, they’ll get stuck as beginner level Bloodren 10s till then?

Hiss~

The group sucked in air unnaturally.

’So cruel...’

To the strong like them, time was the one thing they highly valued.

Watching others they came with, go ahead, leaving them behind, is like taking a bullet straight to the heart.

Sorry, but they just couldn’t let that happen.

Levon frowned, his nerves feeling on edge. It wasn’t just him, but others who thought of another major issue.

"Instructor Winhest, this must also mean–"

"Yes," Winhest spoke, cutting the speaker’s sentence midway. "Even with your dodo brains, it seems many of you have already figured it out."

If they can be made to sit back for a year, doesn’t that mean they must be others in the past who were also made to sit back in wait?

"During your Phase 1 Bloodren competitions, there’s a high possibility of getting paired with someone from Last year."

This was definitely a bad thing for them who have only been here for a while.

These old Beginner level 10s, have been here for far longer, and have properly learned more techniques and mastered more advantageous skills than them.

It can be said that although they would be excited to fight against these old and obviously stronger Bloodren 10s, they still wanted to stay in the loop, not wanting to wait for a year.

"Tsk," Leo scoffed, lying lazily on the table. "Those old Bloodrens are probably going to be desperate."

"Yeah," Shugo agreed. "After getting held back for a year, they must be desperate to pass the Bloodren competitions and continue classes."

To be honest, there’s a lot of things to keep up with while here.

The ball in Levon’s neck rolled up and down. "What do we know? Let’s tally."

"First," Levon continued. "At their current level, if we have a maximum punishment time of 2 years, we’ll get sent to any of the lesser departments that don’t focus on battle."

Rayna nodded. "Another matter is that, although the average ranking up time is 2 years, we can still take up to 8 years to advance from Bloodren 10 to 9."

"That’s right," Shugo whispered. "So long as our maximum punishment time isn’t up to 2 years, we can continue training for a maximum of 6 years while in Bloodren 10."

During their punishment period when working in various departments and even assisting Clara, they got a few intel here and there.

Artilla thinned her lips. "Although they say 2 years is the average time to advance, from what I gather, a majority of Bloodren 10s use 3~4 years instead."

Artilla felt that 2 years average time should be if they don’t have any punishments or failures that keep holding them back.

If they were like Victorio and his gang with no punishments, or others with no Competition failures and other parameter failures... then 2 years would be the average advancement time.

"But must we really wait for 2 years?" Rayna questioned, a little unwilling.

Her body was already turning cold when thinking of such a long delay.

"No," Levon assured, remembering the brief indirect statement Clara had said earlier. Her single statement had answered about 50 questions brooding in his mind.

Some people have left in under a year, while others used up to 7 years to advance.

So it all boils down to strength, ability, intelligence, and enough caution to avoid the many pitfalls this place uses to keep them stalled.

In the end, just how long would it take for their little group to rank up?

Levon’s eyes gleamed with anticipation.

Only time will tell...
