Chapter 176: A Cruel Fate

Arc 3, Chapter 176—A Cruel Fate

.

.

Time flew by a lot more than usual, especially since they have been fighting from 10 AM to an hour before Daybreak. The time was 5:41 AM, and the ghouls, as though listening to a central command, vanished from the battle scene before the sun threatened to come up.

What was going on here?... They’ve been fighting for almost 8 hours, and were statically exhausted beyond measure.

On their first night, they only fought for 5 hours. And now, they fought for almost 8.

Many had no tears but wanted to cry. Now they understand why Breakfast isn’t served onboard the train. Because with how exhausted they are, who has time to wait around for a meal?

It was better to crash soundly and then wake up somewhat energetic to face whatever trails were underway.

Sigh...

Looking around, everyone had helpless expressions. For the first 3 hours of their battle, they managed to keep the ghouls from coming in. However, they couldn’t keep it up for long.

Once again, the ghouls made a mess of things, breaking and damaging what they worked hard to fix.

Levon, Leo, and the other guy, also exhausted their shard abilities while on the roof. So they switched with Rayna, Shugo and 2 others.

No matter what, Artilla was to remain in the Cabin, holding the fort. And during this time, Levon, Leo and the other guy were to rest up and eventide their shards.

Well, that was how they worked things out... until the enemy found a breaking point.

Brack!!!~

Everything happened suddenly. And before they knew it, they were fighting to sunrise inside the cabin.

Such is life.

Everyone smiled wryly and in defeat when seeing the mess left by the enemy. Looking at each other, both sides felt too exhausted to act pretentiously. So without Levon saying a word, they stripped by themselves and began inspection.

So far... so good.

None in their group was affected. But the same couldn’t be said for others in different cabins.

During the battle, some were beaten and turned right before their eyes. They found out that turned Bloodrens seemed to be a little stronger than normal Bloodrens.

The second the transformation occurred, the shard shot out from the victim’s body and seemed to float towards the heavens till it vanished like a popped bubble.

All shards return to the heavens once a Bloodren is killed, or gets turned. But how it later returns to the world and is picked up by the Organization, is something no one knows.

In the end, it seemed good and evil cannot mix. So the moment you turn, you lose your shard abilities... Of course this was all just theory and guess work, since no one had ever answered their questions.

The balcony door on Levon’s side was still open. Both sides heard a commotion outside, and slowly headed out to check it out. Although exhausted, they knew they couldn’t afford not to check it out, lest some ghouls return for a sneak attack.

Don’t forget that the sun hadn’t shown its butt yet. They still had about 22 minutes or so before sunrise begins.

With that in mind, they dressed up again like lightning, rushing to the balcony. But what they saw was a Gang-up!

Levon’s fatigued eyes glowed thoughtfully. ’It seems someone got bitten during the last battle minutes. That person probably hid their marks away. But was discovered during the group’s checks. And now, they were forcing the girl to either jump off the cabin, or get killed by them.

She put on a fitiful and aggrieved face, as if wanting someone to speak up for her. But after all they’ve seen and experienced since coming to the Organization, how can a time fall for such cheap ploys?

"Look here, Fritta! It’s either you jump off, or you get sliced off!"

"Dammit, what are we still wasting time talking to her for? I say we just do it!"

"That’s right. It’s dark now, and the ghouls down below will definitely kill her once she goes down. So why don’t we end her right here and now? What difference does it make?"

Both groups discussed ruthlessly, not caring that Britta’s face was now turning morbid from fury.

But so what?

In the end, wasn’t she bitten?

Fritta knew she would turn sooner or later. Still, is it so wrong to try to survive?

After she turns into a ghoul, she swore her human side will definitely win over the vampiric side... despite what Winhest said about it being near impossible and hard.

Hmph!

She, Fritta, will survive no matter what!

With that notion, she jumped down on her own... activating the Shard to ease her fall. A mix of fear and arrogance claimed her skin as she descended.

DRM!~

The train was off, its many compartments storming by Britta off one by one. Until soon, all she could see was the very last compartment storming off.

Gone...

She remained floating in the air for a bit, as the train’s thunderous sounds faded little by little. Now she was alone... alone with her infection, or so she thought.

Grahhh!~

The Ghouls stopped out of the forest, watching the floating human with cd, meaning and hunger-stricken eyes. They couldn’t fly that high, so all they could do was watch... watch in the dark until the sunlight appeared.

Fritta felt cold sweat accumulate on her back, as she flew off in another direction to look for a peaceful place to Turn. But no matter what, she REFUSED to get beaten again and sucked DRY!

...

What a cruel sight.

The fate of the infected was clear to see—cold, gloomy, and with no way out.

Many could see the thoughts in Fritta’s mind, thinking that no matter what, she will be able to overcome her soon-to-be vampiric side. Many didn’t know it, but in the history of the Organization, no one has ever been able to cover home this stage... except one person.

Levon only got to know of this matter during his time spent with Sultan.

That’s right? Sultan was the only one since the beginning of the Organization’s time, to ever overcome his vampiric stage.

Don’t you get it? There have been Bloodrens and higher ranked Staff who have unfortunately gotten beaten and turned. But they all failed to overcome that infectious side.

Sultan alone did it, which proved to be miraculous in the eyes of the Church. This alone showed that his will power was far superior than many who were stronger than him. So when looking at the overly confident and weak Fritta, do you really think she’ll really have the chance to be the next Sultan?

Tch.

Levon shook his head, knowing that the unfortunate who get infected, have no chance at all!

Well, they don’t have time to keep checking on the fates of others. Everyone was dead tired, and soon crashed without care on the spot.

As per usual, they slept till 1 PM, rising up again to clean up. This time, everyone cleaned up and did repairs much faster than their first time. With how chaotic things were around here, they had to create time on their own to train, or else they wouldn’t get anything done.

Seated cross-legged, Levon and several others trained their Origin Breathing Technique. Others chose to head to the rooftops and perform special maneuvers and skills with their shards. And as they trained, they thought more and more about this second battle they loved through.

Levon frowned, realizing that although the vampires that attacked were far weaker than the majority on day 1... he had to admit that their numbers were greater, overwhelming them throughout the night.

But why?... Why were the only ghouls sent their way, the weaker ones?

Levon had a hunch that more powerful ones would soon come. But when?

7:15 pm came again and everyone gathered for mealtime. Their mouths flew in conversation as they chowed down on their meal. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

"Sunlight," Shugo muttered. "Now we can confirm that sunlight does weaken them to an extent."

One must understand that since their becoming Bloodrens, they’ve never actually fought Ghouls in the daylight, or closer to daylight hours.

Every battle they’ve done was at Night. So although many in the organization know about the precise relationship ghouls had with sunlight, they DON’T.

Still, thanks to the many folktales in the outside world, they had a hunch that sunlight did have some effect on these ghouls. And now, after 2 battles, they confirmed this matter once and for all.

At the same time, they didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry when thinking of the folktales in the outside world.

Dammit!

Who was it who made movies, showing that vampires would turn to dust in under a millisecond once exposed to sunlight?

Please! It didn’t work so fast, okay?

During the first battle when the sun came out, they did see the flesh of these ghouls get red and burnt. There were burnt marks appearing the longer they stayed. But for how long before the ghouls go up in flames, this was what they didn’t quite know.

But what they discovered was that so long as the sunlight doesn’t directly fall on these ghouls, they will still live. So if they stay in homes with thick blinds, they won’t PERISH.
