Chapter 305: Long night (2)

Zephyr returned to his cave with the man who approached him. He dragged the unconscious man inside the cave while also listening for anyone following him.

He had been right that the Everharts were around the town and keeping watch of Selene. Their arrival ruined his plans to see Selene tonight since he needed to take care of this matter.

Zephyr leaned the unconscious fool against a wall and walked away to put away the holy weapon.

"Father," Seraphina said, stepping into the light. She glanced at the man her father brought home. "Why is Asher here? Did they go to Selene?"

"No, he was following me to ask about you and Selene. It won’t be long before they start to approach her, and they will keep following me. I must return to send them all back," Zephyr said, since it was the only way for Selene to be left alone. "You will need to come with me."

Seraphina didn’t like the sound of this. "Thomas," she said, turning to her husband. "We have not seen Selene yet. How could we leave before we see her?"

"I will not take you away before you see her. I am not cruel. We shall all see her, but then we must go," Zephyr said, pained by what he had to do. "You two are dead to this town. We cannot ever let it get out that you are alive since it will affect Selene and her children’s lives should she have any."

Zephyr continued, "She was sought-after by the last king like you were. I know that it is painful, but this must be done for her sake. To give her the chance to enjoy the peace that she has now. You can still write to her and perhaps meet somewhere out of this town, but you cannot stay."

Hiding away in this cave was already risky.

"He is right," Thomas said.

Thomas didn’t want to be far away from Selene, but this was what was best for her sake.

"It will not be the last time we see her. We can find a way to see her out of town. Perhaps we can meet in the middle between the two towns, but it is more important to keep her safe," Thomas said, willing to make the sacrifice.

Seraphina didn’t like this, but she knew it was their only option. It was hard to accept right away since she had been away from Selene for so long. She wanted to spend so many moments with Selene to make up for what she missed.

Seraphina lost the chance to see Selene prepare for her wedding and every joyous occasion that followed. It was unfair.

"I will do it," Seraphina agreed to leave. "I am only asking for one day to be with her. One day with her, which is not disturbed, and we shall meet here. We must come up with a plan on how we shall see each other again."

"I will arrange it with her husband to happen as soon as possible. We are lucky that they had not approached her before we had a chance to speak with her. I will start preparing for our things to be sent home," Zephyr said, looking around at all the things he gathered from his trip.

Zephyr’s trips around the kingdom and his plan to rest were put to a stop now. The only way Selene would be left alone would be if he remained where the Everharts lived, so that the family would not come to see her.

The Everharts would not be able to live where they hid without his command. They were doing as they liked now since Zephyr was not present.

Zephyr needed to return to lead along with the elders.

"What about me? Won’t they have questions about me?" Thomas asked.

Thomas still couldn’t believe that he was alive. When taken by the palace court, Thomas expected only for his wife and daughter to be safe while he was ready for death.

Waking up in the coffin was a surprise since he had felt every bit of the holy weapon from the palace quickly steal his life from him. It surprised him even more that Selene was the one to heal him, not Seraphina.

There was much that Thomas wanted to do. First, going to his family, who turned on Selene the moment he was killed, but he could not go there since he was to remain dead in the eyes of the town.

Besides the king, Thomas wanted his brother dead.

"I already have that sorted out. Start gathering what is important to you and prepare for Selene’s arrival tomorrow. It is not what she is used to, so we must make the cave look like home," said Zephyr.

Zephyr looked at Asher. He couldn’t keep Asher here since there would be too much for Asher to overhear when Selene came.

Unfortunately, Asher could not be killed since it would only welcome more problems Zephyr did not have time for. ƒreewebɳovel.com

"I don’t have a gift for her. She had her wedding, and we did nothing for her. What can we do?" Seraphina wondered, looking around the cave.

Thomas touched his wife’s shoulders to calm her. "Selene will be satisfied that we are alive. She knows that we cannot roam the town to find her a gift. It is unfortunate that the things we wanted her to inherit might have been sold or taken by my family. I am sorry."

"You do not have to apologise. Your brother gave his word that he would protect Selene. I hope he suffers for the way he betrayed you. If only you could show your face to haunt him. Despite everything, Selene ended up well taken care of by others," said Seraphina.

It was a surprise to hear that Selene got married to Xavier, but hearing the stories told by Zephyr and what was written in Selene’s letters, Selene found her true home. Selene would make new memories and have new things she treasured.

"I will take care of your family before we go. They are the last I will make suffer for how they treated Selene. I cannot find her ex-husband, so he must have been dealt with already. The only trouble that remains for Selene is the Everharts," said Zephyr.

It was unfortunate that this was the way it needed to end, but with them gone, Selene could finally live peacefully and start her own family.

"I know it is why we are alive, but this talent is a curse. It has caused me to be away from my only child. I need a moment to prepare for our goodbyes. I do not want to be disturbed until I return," Seraphina said, walking away to be alone.
