Chapter 304: Long night (1)

Isaac arrived at the Blackthorn estate, surprised to see that it was still standing. When he heard of Darius leading the palace guards around the town, Isaac first thought the king would head to the Blackthorn estate, so he came here to aid Xavier.

More importantly, Isaac came to see if Agnes was well. In the short time they spent together, Isaac knew that Agnes would give her life to protect Selene if there was danger.

He did not want that to happen.

"Lord Blackthorn is on his way down," Harold informed Isaac.

"Thank you. As for Lady Blackthorn’s maid Agnes," Isaac said, wanting to see her now.

"Agnes is searching for her lady, so she is not yet off work. If you wish to speak with her, you would need to seek permission from Lord or Lady Blackthorn, so Agnes does not get in trouble. Do not distract her while she works," said Harold.

Isaac felt like Harold was acting like a father trying to send away an admirer of his daughter. Agnes never mentioned being close to Harold, but it seemed the two were quite close. Unless Harold was like this with all the maids.

"I won’t distract her," Isaac promised.

Harold didn’t believe that Isaac wouldn’t be a distraction for Agnes. He respected Isaac since he was a man Xavier could trust, but he disliked that Isaac came at a time when Agnes was better at her work.

Agnes didn’t need to be distracted by a lover when there was so much more Harold wanted to teach her. Still, Harold wouldn’t meddle too much.

Isaac felt relieved when Harold walked away.

As many times as Isaac visited the estate, he was yet to get used to Harold.

"You got here fast," Xavier said as he came down the stairs.

"I am a little surprised to see you home when the king is going on a rampage around the town. I passed by many burning homes and humans fleeing. I had to tell them that I was not going to attack, but they were too scared out of their minds to believe me," said Isaac.

Isaac didn’t know how they were going to come back from this. The pact they made with humans to live in peace had been broken tonight, and it would take a long time for humans to trust vampires again.

"I overheard guards speaking of holy weapons in the hands of humans. This would be a good time for me to be in the court," Isaac said, missing his old position.

It was about time the court took these matters seriously. Ignoring the issues the town faced had caused what happened tonight. This could have all been avoided.

"You may soon be able to return to the palace court once the new king is selected, or you might return tonight since the court is short on men. Many of them have died, and I am willing to bet others ran as soon as they heard the king was dead," Xavier said, going toward his front door to open it.

Isaac’s eyes widened. "The king is dead? I didn’t hear of this from the town guards."

"It will take some time for news to reach them. Walk with me," Xavier said, taking their conversation outside.

"How do you know the king is dead?" Isaac asked, getting the feeling Xavier was not home all night.

Isaac knew that Xavier was aiming to kill Darius, but seeing that Xavier was at home looking so comfortable, Isaac thought Xavier was choosing to ignore Darius.

"So much has happened in one night," Isaac said, having too many things to focus on. "For the sake of the kingdom, it is good that he is gone. He’s created so much mess for us to clean up tonight. I should find my way back into the palace court."

"Before you return to the court, there is a matter of demons you must take care of. Some humans were playing with fire and unknowingly had demons attached to them. You will need to hunt them down and kill them with a holy weapon," said Xavier.

Xavier examined the state of the estate as he walked around. All the guards needed to be where they were previously placed, and the gates remaining intact until morning came.

"Demons? What else will there be to add to this night?" Isaac wondered.

Xavier decided to leave out that Dorian was also dead since it would be a nice surprise for when Isaac returned to the court.

"Michael is in the palace trying to fix what Darius has done and present himself as a good candidate for king. Go and tell him that I sent you. Tell him that a search must be led for the humans tied to the church. Work with him to fix the town," Xavier advised Isaac.

"I hope he will be better than Darius. What of the queen and the princess? Are they to remain in the palace?" Isaac asked.

"The queen is dead, and as for the princess, Vivienne’s family would have to decide what to do with her. It would be best for the princess to be raised outside of the palace. The family of the new king might not accept her being present," Xavier said, predicting another fight.

"I don’t think her grandfather will allow her to leave the palace. I am curious how the queen died and what role you played in all of this. If the town guards or court catches wind of your involvement, they will lock you away," Isaac warned Xavier.

Xavier stopped walking at an area where he wanted to create a garden for Selene.

"How will they learn of my involvement? Will you tell them once you find yourself comfortable in the court again? If you open your mouth, I will bury you here where I plan to place a rose garden for my wife. Your grave will be beautiful," said Xavier.

Isaac took two steps away from Xavier. "Selene wouldn’t like to hear that you placed a dead man under a garden meant for her."

"You don’t know my wife better than I do. She would like to know that someone who might have helped to take her husband from her side rests here. Though I am certain you won’t speak to the court about me. Not unless you don’t want to see Agnes again," said Xavier.

"You can’t get in her head and turn her against me," Isaac said, annoyed that Xavier had found a weakness. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

"I don’t have to do anything to turn her against you. Agnes will forever be loyal to Selene, so should you do something to upset her lady, she will not be happy with you. It is something to always remember. I won’t keep you any longer," Xavier said, turning around to go back inside.

"You have demons to hunt."

"Before I go, I would like to have a word with Agnes. I need your permission," Isaac requested.

Xavier smiled. "Regardless of you going back to the court, it seems I have a good way to keep you coming here. You’re forever tied to my home. You may see her," Xavier allowed it. "Be on your way after."
