Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord-Chapter 228: Trick (1)
Chapter 228: Trick (1)
"I think I should stay with you a little. Can you hear me?" Isaac asked, snapping his fingers near Xavier’s ear.
Xavier grabbed Isaac’s hand to make him stop. "I am quite close to breaking your hand and cutting out your tongue. I can hear you a little too well," he released Isaac.
"I can’t help it. You were scaring me while you were resting. You’re not going to suddenly go deaf, are you? It’s not impossible and I don’t want the Blackthorns coming after me thinking I did this to you," said Isaac.
Isaac already had enough problems with the attacks and someone looking for what he borrowed from the court. He couldn’t have the Blackthorns questioning him about Xavier’s hearing.
"Did you tell anyone we were meeting today?" Isaac asked, thinking he could hide he had been with Xavier for so long.
Xavier got out of the carriage and went up to the front door where Harold was waiting for him. "You are on my estate you fool. Harold, where is Selene?"
"The lady and your mother went for a ride for Selene to see more of the land. They not long set off with Lucas, Agnes, and the others before you arrived. Should I send someone for her?" Harold asked.
"No," Xavier replied, not wanting to disturb her. "See Isaac off and have blood ready for them when they return. I will also need you to send a servant to my grandfather’s home to inform him dinner is set for tomorrow night."
Isaac rubbed his ear as though he was the one who could lose his hearing. "Come again. You are inviting Orlork Blackthorn to dinner? That would mean he is awake."
"See him off now, Harold. He is annoying me," Xavier said, leaving Isaac without answers.
Harold walked out to see Isaac off. "You are annoying Lord Blackthorn."
Having to speak with Harold was enough reason for Isaac to leave. He was better off visiting another time to ask Xavier about his grandfather.
Isaac stopped. ’What am I thinking? I shouldn’t come back here. He’s going to lose his hearing and I am going to lose my mind.’
Away from the front door, Xavier walked upstairs toward his bedroom. Before Selene and his mother returned, he wanted to get some rest.
The pain in his ear was no longer there and his hearing was back to normal but with nothing else to do, he could only sleep now as he waited for Selene.
Xavier discarded his shirt when he entered the room and walked right to the bed. He laid down, closing his eyes to drift off to sleep. He woke hours later to a sound in the room.
Upon opening his eyes, Xavier saw Selene getting changed into attire more suited for bed not too far from where he laid.
"When did you return?" Xavier asked, his gaze set on Selene.
Selene looked at the bed and smiled. "Not long ago. I didn’t want to wake you. Did I?"
"No," Xavier sat up. He looked around the room.
"I was coming to join you but I had to get changed first," said Selene.
"I see. Did Elsie come to help you get dressed?" Xavier asked.
"She did. She helped me get cleaned up in another room and then I sent her away to get dressed by myself here. Do you like it?" Selene asked, turning to give him a better look at the dress she picked out.
"Hmm," Xavier replied. "This is one that Fiona gave you."
"I don’t think so," Selene looked down at the dress. "I picked this one myself. It’s a bit revealing just as you like."
Selene pushed her hair over her shoulder and walked to the bed where Xavier waited for her. "What was it that you did today to make you so tired you slept at this hour?"
"I went to see a friend. I forgot to tell you this morning," Xavier said, sitting up so he no longer laid down.
"That’s fine," Selene said, sitting down beside Xavier. "You don’t need to tell me everything. Is something wrong?"
Xavier shook his head. "No, I just like looking at my wife."
Selene smiled, looking down at her lap to avoid his gaze for a moment before looking back. "I’ve been away from you too long," she said, moving to make herself more comfortable.
Xavier didn’t move as Selene came near him. He allowed her to lean in close for a kiss to then grab her by her neck.
"What are you doing?" Selene yelled, trying to pry his hands off of her.
"I should ask you the same. You’re very good at shifting to mimic her scent but you can’t replicate her heart, Morgana," Xavier said, revealing he knew what trick was at play here.
Morgana couldn’t believe he found her out already. Still, she had to continue her act to get out of his hold. "Xavier, you’re hurting me. Please let go."
"Who has been letting you onto my estate? The distraction last time couldn’t have worked so well without a servant helping you and here you are again. Give it a rest, Morgana. I know my wife too well to fall for this," said Xavier.
Morgana didn’t understand how she failed so fast when she looked exactly like Selene. She had mimicked everything well. It was her talent after all. She was among the few purebloods who could shift their appearance to this degree.
"Let go of me," Morgana ordered Xavier.
In her moment of distress, her appearance changed.
Xavier planned to release her but not yet. "You got off easy because my wife found you last time but I am different. I won’t allow there to be a third time you enter my home."
Xavier stood up, pulling Morgana along with him as he walked. She was harder to keep a hold of but he was careful she didn’t get away.
Morgana yelled, calling for anyone outside to come to her recuse but it didn’t seem like anyone was around. It was strange how there were moments when she lost control of her body and regained it.
Strangely, not only was she fighting against Xavier for her freedom but she was fighting her own body to stay in control. Morgana was becoming too frantic to realise it was Xavier’s doing.
"You have to release me. I will go back to the palace and take the servant with me. This was a bad plan," Morgana confessed.
Xavier opened the door and continued to head for his dungeon. "You’re not going home, princess. You aren’t welcome here so I am well within my right to treat you as I see fit when you step on my land. Since you wanted to be here so badly, I’ll find a good place for you."
