Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord-Chapter 227: Clues (5)
Chapter 227: Clues (5)
"Isaac."
"You!" Isaac shrieked, caught off guard by Xavier’s arrival. "Where did you go? You could at least give me a heads-up before you run off somewhere. Why are your ears bleeding?" He asked, confused by the unusual sight. "Did someone stab you in both ears?"
Xavier wiped away the blood dripping from his ears. He had pushed himself a little too far today. "No. We need to go. I have a lot to share with you."
"I think we should take a look at your ears first. If someone didn’t injure them and they are just bleeding for no reason then we need to go to a doctor," Isaac said, stepping closer to Xavier for a better look.
Isaac wanted to return Xavier to Selene just as he found him.
"It is fine," Xavier said, walking ahead so Isaac could follow.
The reason for his ears bleeding wasn’t something he wanted to speak about here.
Isaac followed closely, keeping an eye on Xavier’s ears. "Are you dying? Right, I shouldn’t ask that here," he put his hands up to show he didn’t want to fight.
Isaac followed Xavier to the carriage they came in. He was curious about where Xavier wandered off to.
Isaac waited for the carriage to get far out of the market before he questioned Xavier but seeing Xavier sitting with his eyes closed, he figured there was much more wrong than Xavier was letting on.
"If you got yourself injured and you don’t want any doctor to know about it then I can help you. I’ve patched myself up a lot of times when the healing seemed slow. Let me help you," Isaac said, unable to sit and do nothing.
"It’s healing so stay away from me. For someone who is not my friend, you care a lot about my ears. You’re too loud. Be quiet for a moment," Xavier answered.
Isaac didn’t think he needed to be Xavier’s friend to care about his ears. For now, he remained quiet and waited for Xavier to heal in silence.
Moments like this reminded Isaac that Xavier wasn’t some kind of God as others claimed. He was a normal vampire who could be hurt at times.
’A normal vampire who knows how to get around fast,’ Isaac thought.
An hour of silence fell on the carriage as they headed to the estate.
Xavier opened his eyes once his hearing was better. "Magic stones have that effect on my ears if I overdo it trying to listen beyond their magic. I went to the church to see if she would meet with the priest and she did."
"You stepped on holy ground? I was just thinking you weren’t some God but then you reveal this," said Isaac.
"I didn’t go inside. I lingered outside, listening to where they walked. It is strange," Xavier said, looking down at the palm of his hand. "I’ve been close to a church before and my skin burned the closer I got but today, I could bear with it more."
Xavier’s first thought was that Selene was helping him in some way but after hearing what Cassandra said about the priests, he wondered if the church wasn’t as holy as it was before.
"Do you think it is possible if those who enter the church’s hearts aren’t pure, the church could lose its essence? Then we would be able to enter," Xavier said, wanting to test how far he could go.
"I’ve never heard of such a thing happening. It would be good for us if this was so. If the priests are the ones hurting innocent mixed-bloods, both children and adults. Perhaps their God is no longer with them and we might be able to enter the church in time," said Isaac.
While it would work out well for vampires if this were true, Isaac didn’t want the humans who didn’t have any role in the attacks to lose one of their sacred grounds.
"We will need to test this. We’ll need to go to another church and try to enter it. This needs to stay between the two of us. If Darius finds out, he might send his guards to the church and let the people we are after to get away," Isaac said, wanting it to be done right.
"Cassandra and the priest are one of them. They are not the ones in charge but little spies they send out to attack us. It sounded like she was perfectly placed in Gabriel’s path to come here with a vampire. The good news is they are out of holy water," Xavier shared.
What he found out was useful though it did feel like he was losing his hearing for a moment.
"I wasn’t able to stay to hear the rest of what they spoke of. We need to keep a close eye on them so they might lead us to the others. From now on, anyone who meets with them is suspicious and must be watched. You should only intervene if they are going to kill someone," Xavier suggested.
Xavier closed his eyes again, needing more silence as a pain formed in his ears again.
"I will do that. I have more to ask but I am concerned about the noise for you. Are you certain you want to go home now? You can go elsewhere and rest. You don’t seem to be in good shape now," Isaac said, wanting to avoid worrying Selene. "My home isn’t too far from here."
"I am fine. They are just healing right now. Even though their fountain has dried up, we must still find it. There is always a chance it could be filled again. We are lucky that they cannot bless holy water themselves," Xavier said, continuing to push through the pain.
He could feel his ears healing so there wasn’t any cause for concern.
Isaac was still worried but he decided to speak as Xavier wanted. "Perhaps they are being punished by their God. The moment they hurt innocent children, perhaps they lost sight of their faith and the hand that helped them was no longer there. I wouldn’t help them after that."
Isaac liked to see both sides so he understood very well why the humans would attack vampires who attacked them. They had every right to do so and those vampires needed to be punished but they lost him when they harmed innocent families who co-existed with humans.
"My father used to say the purebloods are cursed to live forever and watch what is not like us die. Maybe what is happening with the church and the holy water is their punishment," said Isaac.
It was a fitting one since the humans abused what was given to protect them.
