"If this is true, why haven’t they told us? I would have been understanding and not been upset that they lied to me. How could they think it is right to tell us we have holy water to protect ourselves only for it to be normal water?" Cassandra asked.
Holy water was their last resort to save themselves if they were in a tricky situation so anyone who went to use that water on a vampire would surely die.
"They wanted to avoid panic which all of you would do. You’ll be safe as long as you continue to be the woman Gabriel wants you to be and he still is useful. I can lead him off course from the others. Go home," Bryce advised Cassandra.
"Why are they lying to us so much? If the water is gone, shouldn’t they move faster to end our plans? I have seen them walking around with holy water so I believe they have kept it for themselves. Something doesn’t feel right," Cassandra said, not liking the church’s actions anymore.
"Cassandra, I suggest you don’t lose faith in the same people who saved your life. It is thanks to them that you are getting revenge on the ones who took your parents from you. You have much to thank them for," Bryce reminded Cassandra.
"I know they saved me but it is starting to feel like they saved me only to use me. I can’t go on like this. Gabriel doubts me because of a lie I told. I messed up lying on Selene’s maid but she deserved it. She didn’t respect me," Cassandra said, getting angry just thinking about it.
Bryce didn’t care what the maid did. "You went to his home as a mistress. Why would anyone respect you? You enjoyed being the reason they laughed at a pureblood. You forgot for a moment what you were sent there to do so deal with the consequences."
Bryce had so much more he wanted to send to the others. Cassandra was exactly the wild card he thought she was which would ruin their plans.
"You had a pureblood right there in your hands that you could have killed and we would pass the blame onto her angry husband. You ruined that for us-"
"I did not think she would leave. He made it sound like she had no one else. How was I to know she had Lord Blackthorn waiting to come for her? The others cannot be upset about that after they lied about who they were arranging for me to be with. They said it was Xavier at first," said Cassandra.
"Why does it matter who you came to town with? We needed to attach you to a vampire and we did exactly that. You," Bryce said, suspicious of her interest in the lord. "Have you fallen for that man?"
"No, you fool. He would have been better to get me inside the palace and I would have enjoyed killing him to then take his estate. It feels like they didn’t make a good pick of who I would marry and though I have mentioned he wants to put a child in me, you have done nothing," Cassandra said, angry they didn’t take her concerns seriously.
Bryce sighed.
What did Cassandra want from him?
Bryce was only listening to orders like Cassandra should be doing. He couldn’t give her holy water since he didn’t have any and he couldn’t pass off the one holy weapon he had to her.
"Go home," Bryce advised her. "I can’t do anything for you. When it comes time for us to fight, you will have the pleasure of killing him and the others in his home. You can imprison who you wish to and treat them as you like."
"Why haven’t the priests’ blessings on water or weapons been able to work? They have pure hearts and they seek to protect our kind yet their blessings have failed to work-"
"Cassandra," Bryce tried to stop her. Speaking like this was going to get her killed by the church.
On one hand, Bryce looked forward to it since she treated him poorly, but on the other hand, he knew it would be a bad look for the church to kill Cassandra.
"No," Cassandra said, shaking her head. It was a concern which needed to be brought up."Why can’t our priest bless anything? They should be granted the power to do so. They always say they pray for more blessings to fall to the sky but none of their prayers have been answered."
Cassandra started to feel like the one who gave them the holy water and the way to make holy weapons no longer wanted to protect them.
"What have we done that was so wrong?" Cassandra questioned.
"Nothing. We have done everything needed to protect our kind. I believe it is as I was told. The priests from the first war wasted what they were given so now we have to do the best with what we have. I," Bryce stopped, his focus going to the window.
Bryce was certain he saw a shadow.
Bryce walked to the window to look out. No one should be back there.
He opened the window and looked out but didn’t find anyone. No one should be able to hear clearly since they weren’t right against the window speaking and they weren’t yelling. They were lucky vampires could not come near to the church and if they did, there were magic stones placed around.
After checking no one was around, Bryce closed the window.
"You need to leave now. You are going to get me killed if you keep showing up like this. Use Gabriel leading the town guards to your advantage. You know our plans so you can lead him away from us. Do something to make him happy. Say you are ready to have his child," Bryce suggested.
"For the last time, I don’t want to have a child with him!" Cassandra yelled, annoyed she had to hear it from Bryce too.
She would rather die than bring life to another vampire.
"You won’t have the child. I will find a good way for you to remain without a child while you keep fooling him. You must hold out a little longer. The end is near for those bastards. Soon we’ll go after the ones responsible for the cruelty we face," Bryce said, touching her shoulder to comfort her.
Cassandra wasn’t convinced the church was going to go ahead with their plans soon. Knowing they lacked holy water changed her opinion of them. It was going to take forever for the church to end what they started so she would do what was needed to force them to act on their plans.
Cassandra walked to the door with a plan already in mind. ’A family must die,’ she plotted.
