Chapter 225: Clues (3)

"I am going to enjoy the day I finally put you away for all the people you have hurt. I am not going to be like Eugene who takes your word and lets you get off easily. I know what you did to Oliver and you’re going to pay for it. The king did right to trust me with this," said Gabriel.

Xavier’s response was laughter. Why was Gabriel still thinking he and Darius were some sort of friends? Why hadn’t he realised yet that Darius hated mixed-bloods?

"I see he found a nice fool to blame when this fails. Good luck trying to lock me away. Isaac, it is time we move," Xavier said, being the first to leave.

Isaac quietly followed Xavier to another spot to watch the church. ’That went better than I thought it would. I kind of expected you to kill him right then and there. So, it was the king’s doing, What is he thinking?"

"He’s using Gabriel as a pawn to get under my skin," Xavier replied. "And he’s putting on a show like he’s doing something to stop another war. Who better to use to calm the town than the man they were just praising?"

"I think it’s working. You know now that I look at him, I see how her plans worked," Isaac said, watching Gabriel from where they stood. "He’s not very aware of the danger around him. I don’t think he is ready to lead the guards. He seems like the type who just likes how it sounds that he leads them."

Isaac started to question if Gabriel truly was the one who got the victory for the kingdom or if he had stolen someone’s work and claimed it as his own. Or, had someone paved the way for him to be a hero?

"It doesn’t make sense. Nothing about that man makes sense but he is getting everything handed to him. Maybe more than one person is using him as a pawn. I will keep an eye on him," Isaac shared.

"She’s here."

Isaac looked at the church and saw that Cassandra had arrived. He glanced at where Gabriel walked off with the guards. Did he know his wife was coming to the church?

"We need to get closer. Xavier? Xavier?" Isaac called, looking around but he didn’t see Xavier. "You could have at least told me that you were going,’ he muttered.

Isaac moved to find a better place to watch from just in case anyone noticed they had been eyeing the church.

Inside the church, Cassandra went in search of Bryce.

"You!" Cassandra called out to him. "We must speak now. I need your help for a prayer."

Bryce wasn’t happy to see Cassandra back in the church again. Her visits were becoming too regular to the point someone might start to notice. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

"There are other priests who will be able to help you, Lady Valor. I am quite busy at the moment and must head out shortly," Bryce said, walking around her after. "Have a good day."

This behaviour was exactly why Bryce wrote to the others to say that Cassandra was losing sight of their plans and she would be the one to ruin them. He was waiting for their response to know how she would be dealt with.

Truthfully, Bryce wanted them to take her back to where the others were.

Cassandra followed Bryce. This was the only time she had to speak with him now that Gabriel was out for his new work. She knew he tasked the servants to watch her so she couldn’t write to Bryce. It was too risky.

"My husband now leads the town guards and I am worried about his safety. I have prayed with you before and I must do it again," Cassandra said, hoping he was smart enough to catch onto what she was saying.

Her life was in danger here. If Gabriel found any clues which could lead back to her, then she was right where she could be trapped and killed.

Cassandra approached Bryce and whispered, "All of you tricked me that I had holy water. I don’t have a holy weapon or water to protect myself so do something. Give me what you have been using."

"I can give you a small moment of my time to pray for you. Come," Bryce said, leading the way for them to speak in private.

Gabriel leading the town guards was all the more reason Cassandra shouldn’t have come here. Gabriel might be interested in the church but if he saw his wife here speaking to a man the jealous brute might become more interested.

Bryce closed the door to his room. "How did he get to lead the guards?"

Cassandra paced back and forth. "He showed interest in it one day and the king allowed it. He didn’t like that the captain of the town guards looked down on him so he took the job."

"Gabriel is a fool who won’t be able to find anything but I don’t feel safe being at his side. You must give me one of the weapons they passed to you or holy water," Cassandra said, looking around the room for what she needed.

"Cassandra, all you need to do is go home and act like a normal wife. Don’t show up before me again. I thought you wouldn’t since you always argue with me when you do show up. Forget that you know me and you will be safe. Don’t react when you hear about the attacks," Bryce advised Cassandra.

It was all he could do for her.

"I am not leaving until you give me something to protect myself with. I can kill him right now since he’s not of any use to us. We thought he could get us into the palace but I was only taken to a ball. Gabriel Valor is useless so give me a way to kill him," Cassandra demanded.

Bryce sighed. "Cassandra, I am not going to change their plans because you feel your life is in danger now. You knew what you were signing up for so you must see it through to the end. As long as you act normal, he won’t kill you. He won’t even consider you to be involved in our plans."

"I can’t go on only that. I need a way of protecting myself. If you can’t give me a weapon then some of your holy water will be enough. I can hold on a little-"

"There isn’t any here. I don’t have any and no one they passed it out to has any," Bryce revealed and right away regretted that he did so. "They gave us normal water and hid that the holy water is all gone."

"You must think I am a fool to believe none of the water they passed out is holy water. It was their way of giving us one last chance to protect ourselves. They can’t be out of it. They just switched mine so I wouldn’t kill him," Cassandra said, not believing the water was gone. ’They’ve made weapons from it."

"That fountain has been drying up year after year and for some reason, it started to dry up faster years ago. They used what they had to make a few weapons and now, they’re hoping the heavens will bless us with more," Bryce revealed.
