Chapter 224: Clues (2)

"I am not against you staying home to be with your wife. Truly," Isaac said, doing what he could to get Xavier’s from his side. "Wouldn’t it be better to be with Selene than to be here with me watching a church?"

"It would be better and I don’t need you to tell me this. Be silent and just wait," said Xavier.

Xavier joined Isaac in watching the priest Lucas spoke about while the others kept an eye on Cassandra and look into her past.

"I need to tell you since you’re here with me and she’s at home all alone. I don’t mind doing a good deed by letting you have the day off. So, be on your way,’ Isaac said, hoping Xavier would take the bait.

"Either you shut up or I’ll do something about it. If I have my way, you won’t have a tongue. Can a vampire’s tongue grow back?" Xavier questioned, looking at Isaac’s mouth.

Isaac covered his mouth with his hand. "We aren’t going to find out today though I have a feeling you’ve already removed someone’s tongue and you just want to test it on me."

Xavier didn’t answer.

"I think I’ve said it before but I don’t understand how you and Selene work. You’re like this and she is sweet. There are opposites and then there are you two. This is more than the good and the bad meeting each other," Isaac said, failing to explain what he meant. "It’s like she’s too good for you."

Isaac expected Xavier to disagree with him but Xavier continued to snack on the berries he showed up with.

Isaac looked ahead at the church where a few humans went in and came out. "I think you’re right about this. They’ve just gotten better at hiding after the war. They fixed where their plans failed."

After looking into the woman Xavier spoke about, Isaac found something strange.

"When I spoke to the woman you sent me to see, I couldn’t make out what she was telling me. In her head, she must have sounded like she was making sense but she seemed so out of it. She’s not in her right mind but the doctors the palace sent are helping. We have a way to turn them back to normal-"

"It shouldn’t be happening," Xavier interjected.

"I agree but there’s nothing we can do about that for now. I think it is good that vampires aren’t losing themselves forever. Unfortunately, the attack sparks more humans seeing the need for war. Are you certain you don’t want to be king? If I could, I would vote for you," Isaac said.

"I don’t want to be king. You wouldn’t want me to be king either. My first order would be to have you be at my side for me to ruin your day. Root for someone else to be king," Xavier advised Isaac.

"I would but is there anyone among your family who would make a good king?"

"No," Xavier honestly replied. "They are terrible in different ways. When you come from families who see themselves as better than everyone around them, they won’t care about the kingdom. Only about those close to them. Darius was raised to think mixed-bloods aren’t vampires."

"You’re part of the five families yet you don’t seem to think that way so maybe there is hope," Isaac said, trying to be positive.

"I’m different because I dislike everyone," Xavier replied.

Isaac frowned. He hadn’t thought about that.

If possible, Isaac frowned even more when something caught his eye. "Isn’t that Selene’s ex-husband? What is he doing with the guards?"

Xavier looked where Isaac pointed and said, "He’s being the blind that leads the other blind."

"How has he become part of the guards? He is standing at the front like he is leading them. What happened to Eugene?" Isaac wondered.

Xavier went back to eating the last of his berries. Rather than think about two men he disliked, Xavier thought of if Selene would like some berries.

Instead of buying them over and over again, they should plant some bushes around the estate so Selene could pick them up by herself whenever she was bored.

Isaac panicked, not knowing what to do as Gabriel started to walk in their direction. He knew the two men disliked each other but surely they knew how to be civil.

"Lord Blackthorn," Gabriel greeted Xavier. "And you," he addressed Isaac. "I saw you around the palace but I don’t remember your name. Were you a palace guard?"

"Palace guards wear uniforms. I dressed as I wanted when I worked in the court," Isaac answered. How did Selene end up with this man?

So far, Isaac thought Selene made poor choices when it came to men.

Gabriel gave Isaac a look over. How did this man end up in the court but Darius failed to find a place for him there?

"You can stop judging me. I am aware I do not dress the part of where I worked," Isaac said, disliking Gabriel already.

"Right. It has been some time since we last spoke," Gabriel said to Xavier.

"It would have been much longer had you seen me and walked right by me," Xavier replied.

"It’s not every day I see you around the town so I couldn’t miss the chance to speak. I’m also a little curious about how married life is treating you. To have a woman like-"

"I suggest you don’t finish that," Xavier said, giving Gabriel the attention he craved by looking at him.

Gabriel smiled. "Given the fact I was once married to her and know how she is, I have a place to be concerned about what you are facing. I don’t need another man and more importantly, a pureblood like you to be ruined by her."

"They are both happily married so you don’t need to be concerned. I have seen it for myself how in love they are. They make my stomach sick sometimes like when you drink bad blood," Isaac spoke for Xavier.

Gabriel found it hard to believe that Selene could be in love with Xavier already when she had been married to him far longer yet he didn’t experience that side of her.

"If that is what you have seen then I can’t question it. It is good she found someone who can put up with her. I wanted to inform you that since I am now leading the town guards, no more of your crimes will go without you receiving a punishment. A good change is upon his town," Gabriel said, flashing his new position.

It annoyed Gabriel that Xavier didn’t show any kind of reaction to his news. He didn’t appear upset which Gabriel expected him to be. Instead, he seemed uninterested in it.

"What happened to Oliver and his wife Fiona will be solved by me," Gabriel said, poking around to get a reaction.

Gabriel knew Xavier didn’t like this but he was doing a good job at holding in his emotions.

"If you are trying to get a rise out of me, you should stop. If you’re trying to show off your position to me then it is pointless. I have never cared who leads the guards. It is always one fool after the next who is obsessed with coming to my gates. I’m starting to think it’s because all of you secretly adore me," said Xavier.
