Chapter 223: Clues (1)

"So, your grandfather is awake and you went to see him while I was asleep. What is even stranger is that he ordered his father to leave our marriage alone or he would be stripped of the Blackthorn name. Your grandfather also wants to meet with us to get to know me. Is that everything?" Selene asked.

"It is," Xavier nodded his head. "He won’t come here unless you agree to it."

"Wait," Selene raised her hand, stopping Xavier from speaking. "I just need to wrap my mind around a few things. Your grandfather Orlock Blackthorn is awake and he stopped your father trying to end our marriage."

"For now at least. My father is a stubborn man who will want to see his plans to the end. I doubt he believes his father would take away the Blackthorn name. For a moment, we will have peace," Xavier said, taking what he could get. "Do you want to meet him?"

"I never thought I would see the day I meet Orlork Blackthorn," Selene answered. She was nervous and a bit scared.

Xavier didn’t understand why she found it so surprising. "How soon did you think you would die? I don’t like it sounding like you are a fan of his. He’s an old bat who does what he likes. It doesn’t matter to me for you to meet him.

"He will eventually speak of children which will get him sent out right away. The choice is in your hands," Xavier said, letting Selene do as she wanted.

"Other than your mother, he is the only one who has shown a good interest in me. I want to meet him as long as he won’t flip and suddenly want me gone or try to kill me. I cannot believe without meeting me, he has stopped your father’s plans. Why?" Selene wondered.

Selene knew she should be happy but she was a little suspicious of Orlork’s interest. She expected an older vampire like Orlork to be more against her.

"Is it because you two are close?" Selene asked, needing more answers before she agreed to it.

"We got along well but I’m not so sure how close we are. He spent a big part of my life sleeping. He has always been the voice of reason and he wouldn’t waste time getting to know you if he would later be against this. He’s most likely going back in his coffin after this," said Xavier.

"I see. Then I will meet with him. It can’t be any worse than dealing with your father though I didn’t talk with Nathaniel. Hopefully, it all goes well. Maybe he knows my grandfather," Selene said, looking forward to the meeting.

"You can’t mention your healing to anyone," Xavier reminded Selene.

While Xavier trusted his grandfather with his secrets, Selene’s secret had to stay between the two of them.

"I know. I just meant he could be an old friend of my grandfather. I have been waiting patiently for my family to show up. Maybe your grandfather’s waking is a sign that my grandfather will show up soon. I can only be positive," Selene said.

"Your positivity is starting to reek. I will inform my grandfather he can meet with us tonight. I’ll have to warn my mother he’s coming here. They get along but she might not want him to see she’s away from his son," Xavier explained.

Selene stood up from the bed. "I hope that doesn’t mean she might leave if he comes here. She must stay. We’ll give her a proper warning. Is there something more you need to say?" She asked after noticing his stare.

"No. Can’t I just look at you?"

"You can but when you do it I will always be suspicious. I hope you are not planning to do something dangerous so you are having one long look at me now. Tell me it isn’t that," Selene said, knowing there was something else. "Is it the attacks?"

"No, I just want to look at my wife. I haven’t received any word about Cassandra. It will take some time to trace back where she came from and she is being watched now. I am not running into some danger. My grandfather will since he can enter churches," Xavier revealed.

Selene sat back down on the bed. "He has a talent to enter a church?"

"No," Xavier shook his head. "He bears the pain a little better than most. He can’t stay inside too long or his body will start to burn like the rest of us. I am curious now how someone like you would be in a church. How long could you be there before your skin starts to burn?"

Selene looked at the palm of her hand. "You want to send me into the church to find clues?"

"Of course not. I would never put you right in the face of danger. I am only curious about what you can do. It would be good to test it a bit. The kingdom is getting more dangerous by the day and though I will always have guards at your side, you should know what your body can do. We’ll continue your training soon," Xavier promised.

"That is good news but for us to test how I am within a church, wouldn’t you need a church? Or do you already have one? I think I must spend the day reading the records to know all that you own. It will help take my mind off your grandfather coming to us," Selene said, standing back up for the second time.

"Harold keeps track of the records in his head. You can ask him and he will answer what you need to know. And Selene," Xavier held her hand before she walked by him. "Don’t worry about my grandfather. I know given the stories you’ve heard he might sound scary but he’ll be more relaxed around you."

"I will take your word for it and I am still going to read the records myself. I have been asking Harold questions from the moment I arrived so it is about time I give him a break. I have noticed Harold does not take days off. There are days when Gertrude leaves to visit family. Why doesn’t he leave?" Selene wondered.

"You want to kill him? When Harold isn’t working you will find him in the garden tending to the flowers. Mostly to the roses so that is why there are so many of them. He likes that they are red and the thorns they have," Xavier repeated what was told to him.

"He wants to fill the Blackthorn estate with roses. Well, if that is what makes him happy then I won’t get in the way of it. Will you be home all day? While I am busy looking at the records, your mother will need someone at her side. It is a good time for you two to talk," Selene suggested.

"It would be a good time for that if we were at odds with each other. We don’t need to constantly talk. What she will want is a drink or two but you mustn’t let her have it. She’ll make your ears bleed the second she is drunk. I will be gone for an hour or so," Xavier said, raising Selene’s hand to kiss it. "Try not to find yourself in trouble until I return."

"Me? I am not the one who has a list of people he wants to kill," Selene said, concerned for whoever Xavier was going to see today. "If it is Isaac you are going to visit, please go easy on him. A little more and he might blow."
