Betrayed by Fiance, Embraced by Hidden Tycoon-Chapter 40: She Was Too Naïve
Chapter 40: She Was Too Naïve
A thin line formed on Sawyer’s forehead, clearly showing his discomfort over Brody’s presence around Abigail. He worried that Brody might accidentally expose him. He almost did it a few moments ago.
Abigail failed to notice Sawyer’s tense expression because Brody stood beside him.
"Miss Abigail—"
"What is it, sir?" Sawyer interrupted coldly. His gaze fixed sharply on Brody.
"Mr. Jones, I just want to inform you that you may park here," Brody said politely, sensing his boss’s annoyance.
"Oh, alright, thanks..." Sawyer replied, turning off the engine and gesturing for Brody with his peripheral gaze once more to leave them alone.
Abigail, overhearing their conversation, became anxious when Brody confirmed that Sawyer could park in the main yard.
Leaning closer to Sawyer to get a better look at Brody, she asked, "Excuse me, Brody. Are you sure we can park here? What if the homeowner returns and my friend’s car is still here? I don’t want you and the other guards in trouble because of that."
Brody tilted his head slightly to get a clearer view of Abigail.
"I can assure you it’s fine, Miss Abigail. In fact, I know for sure the homeowner won’t be back tonight. So, your, uhm, boyfriend can park here until morning—"
Abigail was left speechless and embarrassed.
"Alright, thanks, sir," Sawyer said before quickly turning to Abigail. He was stunned to see their faces so close—close enough for him to feel her breath on his cheeks and smell her warm, lovely breath.
He blinked a few times to meet her panicked gaze, and then he noticed her cheeks slowly flushing, which made his heartbeat race.
The loud thumping in his chest resembled the sound of a war drum, forcing him to return to his usual calm and composed demeanor. He sat straight up again before saying, "Let’s go, Abby. It’s getting late, and we shouldn’t spend too much time here."
Sawyer stepped out of the car, concealing his expression from her; he was afraid Abigail would see what was on his mind. freewēbnoveℓ.com
He approached Brody, who stood nearby, waiting.
"Sir, how was my performance? Did it help?" Brody whispered, feeling proud that he could assist his boss in winning Abigail’s heart. He was eager to help after hearing what Ethan had told him: their boss wanted to pursue Miss Abigail.
Sawyer was at a loss for words when he heard Brody’s question. He felt confused about why his staff seemed eager to match him with Abigail. Just yesterday, it was Ethan, and now it was Brody.
"Can you stop being so obvious? She’ll become suspicious if she thinks I know you. Go! Return to your post and wait there. I’ll call you if I need you," Sawyer expressed, visibly annoyed.
Brody nodded immediately. As he glanced toward the car, he saw Abigail approaching.
"Boss, Miss Abigail is coming," Brody said quietly as he stepped back.
"What happened, Sawyer?" Abigail rushed over, worried that Brody had said something to him.
Before Brody could speak, Sawyer replied, "No problem, Abby. I just gave Brody my cell phone number, so if the homeowner arrives, he can contact me." He smiled.
’Oh my God! Boss Sawyer can smile like that, too?’ Brody was stunned, watching how gently his boss interacted with Abigail.
"Oh, you’re right..." Abigail smiled back at Sawyer before turning to Brody. She still felt awkward around him. This man thought she was dating Sawyer.
She wanted to correct him but also felt it would be easier if Brody and the other guards recognized Sawyer as her boyfriend. It would allow him to visit her anytime without complications.
"Thank you, Brody. Thanks a lot for your help," Abigail said sincerely.
"Alright, Abby. Let’s move now; it’s getting late..." Sawyer gestured for her to lead the way.
Abigail nodded and hurriedly walked toward the back entrance leading to the stone path.
Later, they stood before the metal door. She hesitated to enter the password with Sawyer standing beside her.
She glanced at him and was surprised to see that he averted his gaze as if he understood it was inappropriate to look at a woman entering her door password.
A faint smile graced her lips. After inputting the same password Peters had given her, she looked at Sawyer again.
"Let’s go, Sawyer. I hope you don’t mind climbing to the fourth floor."
A soft chuckle escaped his lips. "You think I’m that weak, Abby?"
"No, no..." Abigail quickly corrected herself. "I don’t think that at all. I just feel bad that you must climb to the fourth floor," she explained.
Abigail walked into the building without waiting for Sawyer to respond.
It didn’t take long for Sawyer to match her pace as they climbed the next floor together. However, something began to bother him.
He glanced at her and expressed his concern, "By the way, Abby, have you changed your door password?"
Sawyer was worried because he knew this place belonged to Ronan. Even though he trusted Ronan, the thought of Abigail staying alone on the fourth floor concerned him.
Abigail glanced at him, her expression slowly turning to distress. She wanted to change the door password but didn’t know how to do it.
Although she had considered watching YouTube videos a few times to learn, she didn’t have much time.
"Not yet. I don’t know how to change it. I don’t have the manual for it," Abigail said, her voice slowly fading when she noticed the worry flash in his eyes.
"So, you still use the same password as your landlord?" he asked, concern clearly visible on his face.
"Yes..."
Sawyer was speechless at her naivete. She was too naïve as a renter. But he doubts how to tell her that, not wanting to interfere too much. Yet, he felt confused about his own feelings.
Why did he care so much that others could know and misuse her password door?
It wasn’t his responsibility that she was that naïve. Furthermore, he was confident in the quality and loyalty of his house staff and guards. He knew his house was totally safe for her.
He wanted to dismiss his silly concern, but his mind betrayed him and urged his mouth to say something to Abby about it.
"Abby, might I suggest something to you?" he asks.
