Chapter 39: Boyfriend?
Abigail was confused.
"Why is the gate already open? I didn’t even step out of the car. What’s going on here?" Abigail narrowed her eyes at Brody, who stood near the gate, his eyes focused on their car.
Her confusion deepened when she saw Brody and other guards nearly bow when they let the car pass through the gate.
"They let your car in as if they know well whose car it is. How did they know the car well, Sawyer?" Abigail asked curiously, turning her gaze to him.
"What? Are you sure they let in because they know the car and not you? I thought they saw you. No?" Sawyer replied, trying to maintain his calm and composure.
However, inwardly, he scolded himself for forgetting to inform Brody and the others that he would drive Abigail tonight and foolishly become a guest in his own house. He hoped Brody would quickly grasp the situation and not accidentally expose him.
Sawyer hurriedly rolled down the car window and, with his peripheral gaze, discreetly signaled to Brody as clearly as possible, trying to indicate that Abigail was with him.
"Sir, we—" Brody’s voice faltered abruptly when he noticed Abigail sitting beside his boss. He felt all the color drain from his face, shocked to realize he had nearly made a massive mistake by revealing his boss’s true identity as the homeowner.
Quickly recovering from his mistake aptly, Brody greeted Abigail in a casual tone. "Ah, welcome back, Miss Abigail. I knew it was you in the car," he smiled politely.
"Hi, Brody. How did you know I was in the car? Why did you open the gate without me asking for permission?" Abigail asked, still puzzled.
Brody clenched his fists, feeling the tension of Sawyer’s peripheral gaze, which seemed to warn him, "Make one more mistake, and you’re done!"
He cleared his throat before saying, "Hmmm, Miss Abigail, last night I saw you come out of this car, and before you left the house, you also asked permission to bring your boyfriend..." Brody smiled when he noticed her gasp and blush.
As she opened her mouth to respond, Brody hurriedly added, "So when I saw this car approaching the gate, I immediately knew it was you and the boyfriend you were talking about. Was my assumption correct, Miss Abigail?"
Brody politely grinned, pleased to help his boss win Abigail’s heart and glad he could avoid a disaster in his job.
Abigail’s face instantly flushed upon hearing Brody’s words.
’Boyfriend? Who’s dating Sawyer? What on earth is Brody thinking?’
Just as Abigail was about to correct him, explaining that Sawyer wasn’t her boyfriend, her words faltered when Sawyer spoke.
"Thank you, sir. It was very kind of you to assume as such. So, may Abigail and I enter the house now?" Sawyer asked Brody. His formal and expressionless tone puzzled Brody.
’Does Boss Sawyer disapprove of what I just said and did?’ Brody wondered while hurriedly nodding. "Yes. Yes, Mr. Jones! Certainly. Please..." he said with great mannerism, slightly bowing and stepping back to let the car entirely pass through the gate.
Meanwhile, inside the car, the atmosphere felt like the temperature had suddenly dropped below zero. Abigail felt incredibly awkward sitting beside Sawyer, who seemed unaffected by Brody’s words.
Unable to contain herself any longer, she turned to him and said, "Sawyer, I’m really...really sorry if Brody thought you were my boyfriend. It was very presumptuous of him. I’ll tell him the truth later." She felt embarrassed.
"It’s fine, Abby. There’s no need to correct him. Actually, it’s good because I can visit you anytime since he thinks we’re a couple now," Sawyer said casually with a slight smile. However, he felt shocked by his own words. How could he suggest something silly like that? What an idiot.
But the ball rolled as he had already said it, so he just let it be.
’Nobody was harmed, right? But what if she disagrees? That would be embarrassing,’ he wondered while glancing at her, wanting to see her expression and hoping she would give a clue.
Abigail was stunned by his nonchalance. Countless questions raced through her mind, adding to her confusion. freёwebnoѵel.com
"But, Sawyer, what if your girlfriend hears about this? She might be mad at me, right?" This was the foremost question she wanted to ask him.
A half-smile slowly appeared on Sawyer’s lips.
"Well, you don’t have to worry about that, Abby. I don’t have a girlfriend right now, nor am I close to any other woman apart from you. So just let it be... you are now my girlfriend. At least in the mind of your house’s guards."
’Heaven! Why does this man sound like he’s professing his feelings to me? Did he!?’ Abigail shook her head, trying to dismiss the audacity of thinking Sawyer was really asking her to become his girlfriend.
Abigail could feel her face getting hot. She turned to see the street ahead, trying to hide her shyness. However, she was shocked to see Sawyer heading to the front yard.
"Sawyer, please don’t park here..." Abigail said, surprised to see him park near the main entrance.
"Oh, why can’t I park here?" Sawyer asked, turning to look at her.
"I’m sorry, Sawyer, but my entrance is in the backyard. You can park there," Abigail explained, pointing to the road leading to the back. "This area is for the homeowner. He might get angry if he returns and finds your car here."
Abigail didn’t want to offend the homeowner; she feared he might kick her out. She was already grateful that he had allowed her to stay there for a year, rent-free.
Sawyer almost laughed when he heard her words.
’Abby, if only you knew I’m your homeowner...’
He wanted to ignore her request, but he realized it would be too obvious if he insisted on parking there.
"Alright, then. Show me the way," Sawyer said with a genuine smile. He slowly pressed the gas pedal but stopped again when he saw Brody approaching.
