Chapter 41: You Are My First Guest

Even though Abigail was confused by what Sawyer wanted to say, she nodded, curious to hear his suggestions.

"Abby, since you rent this place, I suggest you change your door passwords. I can see that the security here is decent, but you can’t trust people easily, right?" Sawyer expressed his concern sincerely.

Abigail sighed deeply, recalling how many times she had considered changing it.

Before she could respond, Sawyer smiled, rubbed his eyebrow slightly, and looked away. He felt somewhat foolish and nosy suggesting it, especially since he noticed the suspicion flash in her eyes.

"Abby, sorry if I sound too weird or overly concerned about your personal affairs. I only suggest this because I care about you," Sawyer’s words abruptly stopped. He worried his words might confuse her further. He had already left her puzzled since they were in the car heading to this place.

Abigail hurriedly answered.

"Sawyer, I don’t think of you that way... I just find it amusing that I keep telling myself to watch how to change my password on YouTube, but I always put it off. I promise I’ll change it later," she explained as she continued to climb the stairs.

However, Abigail’s steps halted when Sawyer gently took her hand.

Sawyer smiled at her startled expression, then realized how absurd his action was. How could he have dared to grab her hand?

He could no longer understand his thoughts; he felt as if he had utterly lost his mind whenever this girl was around.

Unable to resist, Sawyer followed his heart and kept holding her hand when he noticed she didn’t pull away.

For the first time, they were this close, and they could feel each other’s warmth. Sawyer’s heart began to race as he looked into her beautiful eyes, which were filled with emotions he couldn’t describe.

"S-Sawyer..." Her soft voice broke the silence.

"Abby, let’s go back downstairs. I can help you change your door password. There’s no need for you to waste time watching YouTube videos," Sawyer suggested as he started to walk down to the first floor, still holding her hand.

Abigail was puzzled when she felt Sawyer’s warm hand wrap around her palm. Yet she didn’t pull away; instead, she followed him down to the ground, her gaze fixed on their intertwined hands. Her emotions were a mix of confusion and something else.

When Sawyer came to a stop, Abigail abruptly halted, too, bumping her forehead against his sturdy back.

Feeling the impact, Sawyer quickly turned to see Abigail behind him, concerned that he had hurt her.

"Abby, are you okay?" he asked worriedly.

Abigail mentally scolded herself for losing focus. She stepped back hurriedly, rubbing her forehead.

"I’m fine..." she said, lowering her gaze to avoid his worried eyes. "Let’s hurry and change the password, shall we?"

She walked past him and stood in front of the digital lock.

"Okay, what should I do now?" she asked without looking at him, though she could feel Sawyer’s intense gaze on her cheek.

She struggled to calm her racing heartbeat, waiting for him to respond. But after a few moments of silence, he didn’t say anything.

Puzzled, Abigail looked up to meet Sawyer’s gaze. He stared back at her with unfamiliar emotions she had never seen before, as if he were utterly entranced.

She slowly raised her hand and poked his shoulder with her index finger to check if he was okay.

"Are you alright, Sawyer?" she asked softly.

Sawyer was startled by Abigail’s little touch and even more surprised when their eyes locked as if drawn into a staring contest. He cleared his throat slightly before looking away.

"What? O yeah. Yeah. I’m fine," he replied, pressing something on the digital lock attached to the metal door. "What’s the old password?" he asked, visibly trying to escape her gaze.

"Four zero..." Abigail answered, following his line of sight to figure out what he was doing. But his fingers moved so quickly that she couldn’t catch what he was entering.

After a few moments, Sawyer looked at Abigail again.

"Alright, it’s in the setting mode now. It means you can set your new password, Abby. Press enter when you have entered your new password," he instructed, moving away from the door to give her some privacy.

"Ah, alright," Abigail said as she pressed the door’s digital keypad. She turned to him a moment later and said, "I’m done, Sawyer."

"Huh? So fast? Just make sure you remember the number, Abby."

"I know I will definitely remember it." Abigail was amused to think about how she might have forgotten her birthday.

Noticing how relaxed she was, Sawyer narrowed his eyes on her. "Abby, don’t tell me you used your birthday as your new password?"

Abigail’s eyes widened in surprise as he guessed correctly. "What? But how? How did you know that!?"

Sawyer chuckled and shook his head slightly.

"Well, it’s usually like that; people are too lazy to remember something intricate and often use their birthdays for passwords. You should know that it is an unsafe habit. How easy is it for someone to find out our birthdays when it’s all over social media?"

Abigail was momentarily speechless. He was right; using her birthday as a password was not a wise choice. "Sawyer, should I change it again!?"

"Yes. I think you should," Sawyer replied, repeating the action he had taken earlier when changing her password. "Your birthday?" he asked.

"December thirty-first..." Abigail said casually, but Sawyer was taken aback by her birthday.

"So your birthday is the last day of December..." He smiled.

"Yeah," she admitted shyly, realizing Sawyer knew her birthday. "What about you?"

"Right after your birthday."

"No way!" Abigail shouted, surprised to learn how close their birthdays were. "Wow, you’re so lucky; almost everyone celebrates your birthday..."

He said nothing but continued to help her change her door password.

After dealing with the door passwords, they rushed to the fourth floor.

Abigail didn’t want to waste any more time; she needed to cook for them now, or Sawyer would spend all night at her house.

"Welcome, Sawyer, to my humble home! You should be proud because you are my first guest," Abigail said as she opened the door, allowing Sawyer to enter. freewebnσvel.cѳm

Sawyer felt warmth in his heart at her words. "I’m so happy to be your first guest, Abby," he replied.
