Chapter 276: Don’t Lie Harvey Jones!

A few days later.

Nathaniel Jones called his son Walter Jones and his grandson Harvey. The three of them, accompanied by Martha, sat in the living room.

The living room, which usually felt warm, suddenly became cold. None of them said anything, but the tension was clearly visible in their looks at Nathaniel Jones.

Nathaniel’s sharp gaze was fixed on his grandson, who sat across from him. He was bewildered by all the news from outside. How could Harvey be in a relationship with Serena Philips?

Nathaniel still vividly remembered asking Harvey to bring his girlfriend on his birthday. Still, Harvey replied that he didn’t have one and didn’t even have female friends.

He also recalled that Serena had been pursuing Sawyer a few months ago; she even asked James to approach him to arrange a marriage with Sawyer.

With all the news out there, Nathaniel suddenly had many questions in his mind: Why did the news suddenly report that Harvey and Serena were engaged? Did the journalist only want to spread rumors?

He believed it was just gossip and that the news would fade away. However, his guess was unfounded; this morning, his grandson issued a press release announcing that he and Serena were engaged and would be married on Valentine’s Day.

Thinking about Harvey got him a headache; summoning Harvey here only worsened his headache. After a long silence, Nathaniel warned him again:

"Harvey Jones! Don’t make statements to worsen the situation. Serena is not just any woman you can play with! She is James’ granddaughter!" His voice turned cold and sharp. It was hard for him to believe it, even though Harvey had admitted it a few times.

Sitting next to Nathaniel, Martha shared similar concerns with him. She felt compelled to voice her thoughts.

"Harvey, what your grandpa said is true. This is not a simple matter. Serena is a good girl, and you shouldn’t put her career at risk with a loveless marriage. Please think about the possibility that your grandfather’s relationship with James might become strained," Martha said, expressing concern. However, she was surprised by the flash of annoyance in Harvey’s eyes.

Walter Jones, who had been silent all this time, could only massage his temples secretly. He had heard Harvey’s explanation yesterday, and just like his father, he also didn’t believe that his son was in a relationship with Serena for love—he even suspected that Harvey was just trying to annoy his younger brother, Sawyer.

However, Walter began believing it when his ex-wife called to inform him that their son, Harvey, had met her and asked for her blessing to marry Serena Philips.

Hearing his grandparents’ words, Harvey laughed in confusion. He couldn’t believe they still thought the news outside was merely gossip. Despite his attempts to explain and convince them, he began to feel frustrated; all his efforts seemed futile. It left him exhausted.

"Grandma, Grandpa, should I ask Serena to come here and explain that I’m not joking or tricking you?" Harvey’s voice was soft, but his tone conveyed a sense of desperation.

"Why do you want to ask her to come here? Harvey, please... be honest with Grandpa, okay? Stop this lie..." Nathaniel said softly. Before Harvey could respond, he continued, "I won’t be mad at you if you are honest with me, and all that news out there is just rumors."

Harvey groaned as he rubbed the back of his neck, feeling frustrated. "Why don’t you believe me? I didn’t lie! You can call Grandpa Philips if you still don’t believe me. I visited them on New Year’s Eve. I even met Sawyer and his wife there—"

Martha couldn’t believe what she had just heard. "You had dinner with the Philips family on New Year’s Eve? I thought you were with your mother’s family?"

"Harvey Jones, what did you just say?" Nathaniel exclaimed, shocked.

Walter furrowed his brow as he looked at Harvey, puzzled by his words. He couldn’t help but interject, "Harvey, don’t lie! I remember you asking me for permission to have dinner with Angela at the Morgan family residence, right?"

Harvey laughed inwardly at his father before returning to his Grandpa; he felt so annoyed that they didn’t believe him, leading him to say something confusing and incorrect.

"I’m sorry, Dad and Grandpa. I meant to say lunch. I visited Grandpa Philips’s house with Serena and met Sawyer and his wife there. However, I couldn’t stay for dinner because I had to go to my mother’s family house," Harvey explained.

When he noticed the doubts lingering in Grandpa’s eyes, he added, "Well, Grandpa, if you still don’t believe me, feel free to call Grandpa Philips."

Nathaniel didn’t wait any longer. He asked his butler, Thomas, to call James because he needed to speak with him directly.

Before long, Thomas returned with the phone and handed it to Nathaniel, saying, "Master, Old Philips is already on the line." freēnovelkiss.com

"Hey, Niel, how’s it going, my friend?" James Philips’s voice sounded cheerful from the other end, but Nathaniel’s expression stayed grim.

"Never been better, my friend. Never been better..." Nathaniel tried to sound cheerful, but his stiffness revealed his true feelings. He couldn’t believe his best friend had kept the news about Harvey and Serena from him.

"Niel, why are you calling me this early?" James’s curious voice snapped Nathaniel back to reality.

"James, did you hide something from me?" Nathaniel asked calmly.

"Hide something?" James replied, confused by Nathaniel’s question.

"Hmm, you blessed my grandson to marry your granddaughter. Why didn’t you let me know about it?"

Suddenly, silence hung in the air. James couldn’t say anything for a while.

"Niel, please don’t be mad at me. I didn’t tell you intentionally because I knew you wouldn’t believe me. Well, probably. You need to hear it straight from Harvey. Did that brat tell you directly, or did you just hear about it in the media?" James asked.

"You know the answer, my friend. I just learned about it from the media," Nathaniel said, looking annoyed at Harvey.

"How dare that brat disrespect his elders? How could he do that to his grandfather?"

Hearing Grandpa Philips’s disappointment through the speakerphone, Harvey immediately felt his blood run cold.

Harvey worried that his plan to marry Serena might be in trouble. He needed to win Grandpa Philips’s approval to carry out his plan.

He promptly interrupted his grandfather’s conversation, hoping Grandpa Philips would hear him. "Grandpa Philips, I had planned to meet my Grandpa today to explain, but the media has already leaked the news."

"Who is that? Harvey, is that you?" James’s voice sounded confused on the other end.

"Yes, Grandpa, I’m here..." Harvey replied loudly, smiling at his grandfather, who glared back at him.

"I see. All right, young man," James chuckled before continuing, "Niel, you should tell me if you are using a speakerphone, my friend."

"Sorry, buddy. I just wanted Harvey and the others to hear what we discussed."

James’s laughter was heard on the other end before he said, "Harvey, you should meet your grandfather soon. Please don’t wait until the media finds out about it. Okay, you guys chat again. I need to go now. My wife is waiting for me. We will visit Abby today." He ended the call without waiting for someone to respond.

Nathaniel and Martha exchanged glances after hearing James’s sentence. Suddenly, they felt an urge to visit Sawyer’s house as well.

After hanging up with James, Nathaniel asked Harvey why he wanted to marry Serena, especially since she was Sawyer’s ex-girlfriend.

Harvey smiled wryly at his grandfather’s question. He had already prepared an answer that mirrored the question and discussed it with Serena. That way, if her grandfather asked, they would both respond similarly.

He took a deep breath before responding, "Grandpa, I’ve liked Serena for a long time, but I never pursued her because I knew she only liked Sawyer. When I discovered that Sawyer married someone else, I immediately contacted her..."

Martha and the others were shocked to hear his words. They never expected Harvey to have feelings for Serena.

"I immediately asked her to marry me, and whatever Serena was thinking at that moment, she accepted me. That’s how it happened; we finally got together and decided to get married on Valentine’s Day."

Harvey laughed, feeling immense joy at his family’s reaction. They immediately believed his story.

"I also informed my mother’s family, and they support my decision to marry Serena Philips," Harvey concluded his explanation, feeling relieved.

"Harvey, I hope you’re being honest. You married her because you love her, not because of some malicious intent..." Nathaniel’s warning stunned Harvey. He thought his Grandpa would believe his story, but he was wrong.

They continued their brief conversation with Harvey before wrapping it up, especially after he promised to bring Serena to meet them. They needed to ask her why she was willing to accept Harvey.

After watching Harvey leave the house, Walter turned to Nathaniel. He asked, "Dad, have you considered the possibility of Harvey returning to the company if he marries Serena?"

Nathaniel was taken aback by the question. He didn’t have an answer immediately, as he hadn’t thought about that scenario. However, after hearing Harvey’s intention to settle down and build a family with Serena, he felt hesitant.

"Hmm. I’ll think about it later," was all Nathaniel could reply to his son.
