Chapter 93: Sparring

After making it clear that they weren’t allowed to use flashy techniques from now on, he asked them to go and pick a weapon from the stacks in the training ground.

The weapons in the training ground were slightly worse than those from their personal classroom, but they still did the job. Each of them took their weapon and got back on the field.

"Good, now everyone is ready. You’ll be sparring against yourselves, but only with the basic foundation moves relative to your weapon.

This sparring will push you all to learn better ways to use your basic movements to get the type of results that you want," Quin explained.

He allowed everyone to pick their own partner to duel with. Riven was about to walk to Noel, but Mia walked in front of him, her sword in hand, ready to go.

She pointed the sword at Riven. "Spar with me," she said. Her tone was cold. Riven looked at her and walked past her.

"I have no interest in sparring with you if that’s the attitude you come at me with," he said and kept walking. freewēbnoveℓ.com

She bit into her lip. She was enraged by the way he acted, but she couldn’t lash out how she wanted. Still, she wanted to fight him. She wanted to show the whole class that her foundation was stronger than rank one, and she wanted to prove that her fiancé was a good-for-nothing.

"It’s fine, you can spar with me. No need to be bothered by him," Lance walked up to Mia and said. She glanced at Lance and turned back to look at Riven.

"I’m not interested in that right now," she said and walked towards Riven. Lance stood there; he clenched his fist tight, angry at the fact that she didn’t even pay him attention—all because of Riven.

"Hey Lance, if she doesn’t want to spar with you, I can." A blonde girl walked up to him, her eagerness was evident in her eyes. He looked at her and cracked a smile, the side of his lips trembling uncontrollably.

"That will be nice," he said. Her face immediately lit up. She grabbed his hand, interlocking their elbows and pulling him along. She winked at her friends as she walked away with Lance.

Mia followed behind Riven, who was with Noel now. They were about to start their sparring session.

"I said I wanted to spar with you," she said, her gaze colder than before, her brows furrowed.

"And I don’t want that. What the hell is wrong with you? Do you think you can get anything just because you want it?" Riven asked.

The vein in her neck bulged. She fought with all her urges not to lash out now and kill him. She gritted her teeth and finally spoke. "Fine, let’s have a sparring match, and if you win, I’ll serve you for an entire week and be nice to you," she said.

Her words immediately intrigued Riven—not because he needed someone to serve him, but because of her character. She was written to be very unyielding and stubborn.

For her to make a compromise like this seemed very unusual. He decided to take this deal and see where it leads.

"And what if I lose?" he asked. She smiled, like she had gotten what she’d been looking for. "If I win this spar, then you’ll have to call off my engagement to you publicly and declare that you were not good enough—and you want everyone to know that." She spoke those words with a smug expression.

’Ohh? So this is what she wants—simply to embarrass me. But then again, I’ll go with it,’ Riven decided.

"That’s fine. So, do you want to start now?" he asked. His question took her off guard. She didn’t think he would take it that easily, and for some reason, that pissed her off more.

"We can start now. So you know, I’ll not hold back even a little," she said as she got into her stance. Riven also got into his stance. There was only a meter between them.

The sounds of others sparring surrounded them, but all that sound vanished as they locked gazes. Three seconds went by with no one moving, and then she launched the first attack.

She came in straight. Her burst was impressive, and she covered the distance in half a second. Her sword was already in a slashing motion, going for his neck.

Riven stepped back and created enough space to block the attack. Their swords clashed loudly, and sparks flew.

’Her strength is impressive. I didn’t expect her to carry such a punch,’ Riven thought.

’He blocked that easily. I know the attack was straightforward, but that flash step doubles my speed for an instant—I should have made it past his defense,’ Mia thought.

She pushed forward, trying to break through his defense, but Riven wasn’t letting her. He tilted his blade and allowed hers to slide down, then he took a few steps back.

She tried to follow up quickly, but Riven already moved. He was faster than her. He hacked from above with all his strength, and she was forced to block.

But as his sword hit hers, she was pushed down. Her knees slammed into the ground. She looked up in shock.

’Where did this strength come from? This can’t be possible. How is he this strong?’

She pushed his sword up in a powerful burst. She was about to transition into one of her crazy moves, but she recalled what Quin had said, so she flipped and landed a few meters away.

’This is wrong. There should be no one with a better understanding of basic swordsmanship than me. I trained in it for many years unending.’

She gripped her sword tighter, her eyes blazed with rage. She shot from where she stood. When she came within range, she used her flash step and doubled her speed. She went for a thrust, with all her speed and strength poured into it.
