Chapter 257: Interrogation frёeωebɳovel.com
The enjoyable family dinner finally began after Walter Jones and Hannah delivered their speeches.
While the others enjoyed dinner and cheerful conversation, Harvey Jones continued to sulk after what had happened earlier. He sat far enough away from his parents and grandparents to avoid hearing their discussion and to prevent his father and grandfather from asking him again about the company.
However, even though he wanted to ignore Sawyer and his new wife, he couldn’t. So many things made him feel uneasy and threatened, knowing that his little brother was already married.
If Sawyer had a child ahead of him, he was sure that his position as the primary heir could be at risk. What’s more, he didn’t have a girlfriend.
After a moment, Harvey could no longer wait. He turned to see Angela beside him. "Angel, are you sure they’re already married? Maybe they’re only engaged?" he asked in a low tone, not wanting the others to hear them.
Angela glanced at Harvey before saying, "Same goes for you, bro. At first, I didn’t believe it, but they are really married. Grandpa wouldn’t let them in our house if they weren’t."
Harvey said nothing, yet his gaze clearly revealed his doubt.
"Bro, you know who Serena’s grandpa is, right?"
"Yeah, of course I know. He’s Grandpa’s best friend. Seriously, why did you ask me?" Harvey’s eyebrow was slightly arched.
"That’s why you shouldn’t doubt it; Grandpa would make a fuss if they weren’t married. I remember old Philips coming to meet Grandpa and asking for a marriage arrangement for Serena with my little brother, but Grandpa refused," Angela explained.
Harvey nodded slightly, momentarily glancing at Abigail before refocusing his attention on Angela.
"You have a point. But why didn’t I hear anything about it? They registered their marriage without anyone knowing? What about Dad? Did he know about Sawyer’s marriage?" Harvey asked curiously.
"Hmm, Dad and Hannah went to their wedding, and so did Grandpa and Grandma. I also heard that only their closest friends attended..." Angela responded calmly, though she was irritated with Sawyer for not inviting her.
Harvey was lost in thought, no longer questioning Angela. Yet a moment later, his sister’s whisper nearly made him choke.
"Bro, is the gossip about the company true?" Angela asked, her curiosity piqued. A few days earlier, she had read about Harvey’s involvement in a bribery case. Strangely, the news vanished before she had a chance to confront him.
What puzzled her was that J Group’s shares’ trend had been bearish almost daily for several days. She thought this was to be expected, but after hearing Sawyer earlier, she became concerned.
Harvey smirked at her before replying calmly, "You’re a businesswoman; you should understand that business will always have problems. You don’t need to worry!"
Angela nodded in agreement with him.
"Alright, I’m done..." Harvey said, gesturing for Angela to stop talking since their grandpa was now looking in their direction.
...
Not long after, dinner was finally over. Abigail and the other women stayed in the living room, talking while enjoying warm snacks by the wooden stove. And the men chatted in Walter Jones’s study.
At first, Sawyer was hesitant to stay long at his parents’ house. However, he couldn’t simply leave after getting Harvey in trouble. He needed to see how their grandfather and father would respond upon learning of the company’s issues.
Sitting beside his grandfather, Sawyer ignored Harvey sitting across from him. He enjoyed watching their father interrogate Harvey about the company’s losses in the oil project and how Harvey looked humiliated in the process.
"Harvey, you told me that the government only postponed the project. But why is there such a significant material loss now?" Walter asked.
Harvey clenched his fists tightly, his calm fading after his father and grandfather bombarded him with questions.
"Dad, I really did tell you like that. It’s true that the government only paused the project temporarily to let us settle a few matters. But don’t worry, it’s just a temporary delay. There are losses, but they’re not as significant as Sawyer claimed!" Harvey explained in detail to help his father understand.
However, Harvey’s hatred for Sawyer intensified. He would never let Sawyer escape the trouble he caused him tonight; he would ensure that Sawyer suffered!
"Are you sure we don’t need to worry?" Nathaniel interjected, narrowing his eyes at Harvey. Although Harvey appeared calm, Nathaniel noticed the tension in his gaze. He was aware that his grandson was lying.
"Yes, Grandpa! Trust me. This isn’t my first year managing the company. I know what I need to do..." Harvey reassured Nathaniel once more.
Although hesitant, Nathaniel tried to give his grandson a chance.
"That’s good to hear. But Harvey, if you have a problem, don’t be too arrogant; think you can handle it yourselves. You should inform us early before it’s too late..." Nathaniel said gently, but his eyes narrowed at Harvey.
"Sure, Grandpa. I promise you this problem is not too serious," Harvey answered happily. He felt relieved that his grandfather was no longer interrogating him. But a few moments later, his father’s question made him tense again.
"Harvey, what’s going on with the company’s stock price? Why does it keep dropping? This is starting to worry some shareholders, myself included. A few close friends who happened to be shareholders, too, began calling me today, asking me to check in with you and press you through me to provide good answers. Well, tell me, how should I answer them?" Walter asked.
Sawyer, who heard his father’s question, inwardly laughed to himself. He was in a good mood and enjoyed watching Harvey’s expression shift to panic. However, he didn’t want them to know. So he ignored them by taking out his cell phone and texting Ethan.
"Ethan, you can release the news about the bribery scandal to the mainstream media. And while doing that, make sure my big brother’s nasty nightlife is exposed, too!"
Not long after, Ethan’s reply appeared.
"Should I tell the media to keep it brief and avoid it from becoming trending like the last time?"
A playful smile danced across Sawyer’s lips as he typed his response, "This time, make sure the news stays a trending topic."
"Got it, boss!"
Sawyer smiled slightly, looked at his cell phone, and then turned his gaze to Harvey, who was still busy explaining the company to his father and grandfather.
