Betrayed by Fiance, Embraced by Hidden Tycoon-Chapter 222: The Reunion (1)
Chapter 222: The Reunion (1)
At the parking area,
Inside the luxury van, James Phillips anxiously watched the main entrance of Autumn Garden Nursing Home. He was waiting for a signal from Abigail or Sawyer before entering the building.
However, his impatience grew significantly after ten minutes with no sign from them.
He wanted to rush inside to see Sophie, but Abigail’s warning echoed in his mind, holding him back.
"Relax, my friend..."
James turned to his best friend, Nathaniel, who sat beside him. He said nothing to Nathaniel but took a deep breath, trying to distract his troubled thoughts—worrying Sophie would refuse to meet him.
"Why do you look anxious, my friend? She won’t refuse to meet you if she knows you’re here. Relax..." Nathaniel patted James on the shoulder, trying to lift his mood.
Sitting behind them, Martha couldn’t help but chime in, "Yes, James. I believe Abigail could convince her grandmother to meet you. Moreover, I bet her Grandma will be willing to meet you. So, stop overthinking and stressing yourself out..."
James Phillips let out another deep sigh. He looked at them before replying, "Thank you, Niel, Martha. I don’t know why, but deep down, I’m worried she still hates me and will never want to see me again."
He turned his gaze back to the main entrance, avoiding Nathaniel’s eyes. James didn’t want his friend to see how scared he was.
After a brief silence, Nathaniel’s voice broke through James’ thoughts. "How is your investigation going, James? Have you found any clues about who is trying to separate you and your fiancée?"
James clenched his hands into tight fists. He looked at Nathaniel and shook his head. "We found nothing! It’s difficult to find clues because this happened decades ago. I believe whoever did this must have erased all traces."
Martha joined the conversation and asked, "But do you have someone in mind who might be responsible?"
James remained silent, unable to respond to Martha because, until that moment, he had been utterly clueless about who had separated them. This uncertainty was the only reason he wanted to meet Sophie: to clear up his confusion.
At that moment, he could only vow that whoever did this to them would face severe consequences.
"I don’t have someone in mind—" James began, but his sentence trailed off when Nathaniel urged him to look towards the main entrance of the Nursing Home.
"Look, Sawyer... he’s coming out," Martha shouted, adding to the tension for James.
They watched as Sawyer momentarily halted, speaking to James’ driver, who had been waiting outside in case Sawyer appeared to look for their car.
When the car door opened, all eyes turned to Sawyer, who looked shocked as he saw them.
...
"Grandma, Grandpa? Why are you both here?"
Sawyer couldn’t hide his surprise when he saw James Phillips, along with his grandparents, waiting for him in the car. And they are looking excited, unlike James Phillips.
’Why do they look excited? Do they think they’re here for a picnic? Why are they following Grandpa Phillips?’ Sawyer was utterly confused.
Before Nathaniel and Martha could respond, James exited the car and took Sawyer’s hand. He asked impatiently, "Sawyer, how is she inside? Was Sophie willing to meet me?" His trembling voice reflected the tension in his heart.
Sawyer put aside his confusion about his grandparents’ presents and focused on Grandpa Phillips, who looked at him impatiently.
His lips curled into a faint smile. "Grandma Sophie is willing to meet you. Let’s go. I’ll walk you there," he said, turning towards the nursing home, with James happily following him.
However, after a few steps, Nathaniel said, "Wait, wait, Sawyer! We also want to meet our in-laws... so please wait." He stepped out of the car and helped his wife out.
Sawyer stopped. Annoyance slowly appeared in his gaze as he turned to look at his grandparents. This was precisely why he didn’t want them to come now; they had completely forgotten how important this meeting between Grandpa Phillips and Grandma Sophie was—they needed privacy.
"Grandpa, Grandma, please stay in the car. This is a private matter between Grandpa Phillips and Grandma Sophie," Sawyer said firmly, refusing to let them in.
"But we want to meet our in-laws for the first time, Sawyer. Please let us follow you. We’ll wait outside of her room," Martha replied, concerned that Sawyer wouldn’t let them meet Abigail’s grandmother and would send them back to the capital.
"Grandma, I’m not stopping you from meeting Grandma Sophie, but not right now. Please wait here. I promise I’ll make sure you both meet her later," Sawyer said, taking a deep breath. He was starting to feel frustrated facing his grandparents.
James could no longer waste time; he needed to meet Sophie immediately.
"Niel, Martha, please stay here. I need some private time to speak with Sophie. Just wait here," James said firmly. He then asked Sawyer to follow him into the building, not waiting for Nathaniel and Martha to respond.
Nathaniel and Martha felt terrible. They were too excited to meet Abigail’s grandmother and had forgotten about James’s purpose for coming to this place. They returned to the car and waited.
...
After entering the building, James couldn’t wait to ask Sawyer, "How is Sophie’s condition? Is she okay after finding out about me?"
Sawyer cast a quick glance at Grandpa Phillips before responding.
"Grandma Sophie is fine. At first, she was shocked to hear your name from Abigail. But later, she didn’t believe it because she thought you were dead. She agreed to see you in person when we explained that you’re not dead."
James was utterly shocked to hear that Sophie believed he was already dead. "How could she think I was dead? Where did she get that news?" he asked, confused.
Sawyer found James’ reaction amusing. His response was pretty much similar to Grandma Sophie’s. He could only shake his head with a smile.
"You need to ask Grandma Sophie," Sawyer answered while stopping in front of Grandma Sophie’s room door.
The door swung open just as Sawyer was about to grab the doorknob, and Abigail appeared behind it, looking surprised.
