Betrayed by Fiance, Embraced by Hidden Tycoon-Chapter 182: Sawyer Warning (1)
Chapter 182: Sawyer Warning (1)
Inside Andy Bennet’s office,
Sawyer sat on a single-seater sofa, staring intently at Andy across from him. They had been silent for a few minutes. All they did was just look at each other.
The tension in the room was getting thicker!
Andy was still shocked upon learning that Abigail’s fiancé was his best friend, Sawyer Jones. Countless questions swirled in his mind: Why did it have to be Sawyer? Why not someone else? How could he get rid of Sawyer Jones?
These thoughts made his head throb painfully as if his skull might explode. He felt confused and frustrated, especially because Sawyer had won Abigail’s heart first. Once again, he felt defeated, as if someone had spat in his face. It felt really annoying!
Andy took a deep breath to collect his thoughts and remain calm. This sudden revelation had somehow clouded his usually sharp mind, making it difficult to think clearly.
He hated himself for feeling this way, but he couldn’t be angry with Sawyer for uncleared reasons.
With limited options, Andy could only grind his teeth in silence while attempting to calm his racing heart and chaotic mind.
...
Before long,
After seeing his best friend sitting awkwardly before him, Sawyer spoke first to break the silence. "Do you like Abigail?"
Sawyer’s question struck Andy directly. His heart tightened again.
"Do I like Abigail? Of course, I do!" Andy wanted to respond like that, but the words were stuck in his throat. He liked Abigail and didn’t want to hide it from Sawyer, but there was something he needed to know before being honest with his best friend.
"Sawyer, before I answer you, please allow me to clarify..." Andy’s eyes locked onto Sawyer’s.
"What is it?" Sawyer asked curiously.
"Since when did you know Abigail?" Andy inquired. He wanted to find out if Sawyer had known Abigail before him.
Sawyer paused momentarily before answering, "Just a few months ago. Why do you ask?"
Andy was surprised to hear Sawyer reply.
’What the heck! They had just met, and Abigail moved from her fiancé to Sawyer’s arms that quickly. Did Abigail discover Sawyer’s true identity as a tycoon? Is that why she accepted him so fast?’
Andy refused to believe that Abigail was that kind of woman. ’No. No. Impossible!’ He shook his head slowly, trying to dispel negative thoughts about her. He didn’t want to tarnish his perception of the always optimistic and innocent Abigail.
"Sawyer, did you know she just broke up with her fiancé a few months ago?" Andy continued, needing to know if Sawyer was aware of this.
Deep down, Andy prayed that Sawyer would walk away if he realized that Abigail might just be using him as a replacement after ending her engagement.
Sawyer frowned at Andy’s question.
"Man, of course, I know about that. I met her right after she called off her engagement with her ex-fiancé. Andy, why are you asking me instead of answering my question?" His voice rose slightly, showing his annoyance with Andy’s inquiries as if he were being interrogated.
Sawyer wanted to find out if what Ethan said was true: that Andy had feelings for Abigail and intended to pursue her. If that was the case, he knew he needed to stop Andy to prevent their friendship from ending badly.
He respected and trusted Andy, but he didn’t hold back when it came to Abigail. In the end, he would choose to lose his best friend rather than the woman he loved.
Andy smiled bitterly at Sawyer’s obvious annoyance. It was rare—seldom—to see Sawyer display his emotions like this. He chuckled inwardly as he recalled when Sawyer stormed into his office to scold him about the Crimson Leaf Café.
He foolishly laughed to himself as memories flooded back, especially the day when the best lawyer in the country, Rowan Sterling, suddenly took on Abigail’s case.
’Damn it! How could I not realize that? Only Sawyer Jones could make Rowan Sterling want to handle a legal case!’
Now, everything that had confused Andy became clear. He knew he could only blame himself for not seeing the signs sooner. How foolish!
Meeting Sawyer’s sharp gaze, Andy smiled before responding.
"My friend Sawyer, I knew Abigail long before you did. And my answer is YES! I liked Abigail from the very first time I met her. But—" Andy paused, noticing Sawyer’s face turning red and his annoyance growing. Sawyer’s sharp glare felt piercing.
Still, Andy ignored Sawyer’s anger and continued, "Even though I like her, I never told her how I felt because she was still engaged to Ryland Wood at that time. But after I found out she had called off her engagement with Ryland, I began to pursue her..."
Andy felt being honest with Sawyer about his feelings for Abigail was important. "I know you’re angry with me, Sawyer. But you have no right to be. I never knew you were in a relationship with Abigail or even that you were engaged to her. And... So that you know, I have already expressed my feelings to Abigail..."
Andy couldn’t continue when he saw Sawyer growing increasingly furious. He turned his gaze outside the window, trying to avoid Sawyer’s penetrating stare.
...
Sawyer attempted to appear calm in front of Andy. Still, his frustration grew as he learned just how far Andy had gone to pursue Abigail, enough to make him jealous.
A fear settled in Sawyer’s heart. For the first time in his life, he was afraid of another man confessing his feelings to Abigail. And to make matters worse, the other man was Andy Bennet, someone he knew well. For some reason, he felt compelled to know her reaction. "How did she react?" he asked.
Andy chuckled when he saw Sawyer’s frown deepen.
"Damn, Sawyer Jones! Why do you even ask me about it? You should know the answer, right?" Andy replied, shaking his head. Sawyer’s frightened expression was quite amusing to him.
"For God’s sake, Andy... can you just answer me without tossing the question back?!" Sawyer said calmly, trying to suppress his annoyance, though Andy could see the tension in his eyes.
