He literally shouted the question out loud, almost spitting in his brother's face.

"Drive to Zhang construction." Zhang Bo instructed the driver.

Impatiently, Caishen that was in need of answers pulled on his brother's arm.

"Tell me." he ground yet.

"Yes." Zhang Bo answered, a bit of irritation in his voice. "I already said it and I meant it."

"No." Caishen said fiercely.

Bo poked Caishen on the head as an older brother does to a younger sibling that they enjoy teasing. "Hey, who is the older one here?"

Caishen swatted his brother's hand away and continued glaring at him.

"I said no."

"And I say I am already doing it. My manager is already distributing every project that I had left. My retirement speech has been written. The only thing I am not going to cancel is my last fan meeting. And I am only doing it because I promised your wife and her friends special passes. She takes good care of Xiaobo and this is the only good thing I can reward her with."

"Stop saying nonsense. You are not retiring, I will handle it all, father, mother, Wang Yong. I will handle it all I say. So no, you are not allowed to retire."

Quite annoyed with his brother, Bo asked Caishen, "What is wrong with you? Did I ask you to handle it all? Who are you trying to help here? Do you want Zhang group..."

"Hey!!" Caishen yelled at Bo.

"So why?" Bo asked him.

Caishen grabbed the front of Bo's shirt suddenly as he was overwhelmed with emotion and he blurted out. "Because you said it would kill you."

Zhang Bo's face suddenly became pale and his eyes widened. He looked at Caishen with disbelief in his eyes as the blood was drained from his face.

"I heard you." Caishen continued. "You told grandfather that you would die if you stopped acting. You said that it would kill you to sit in the company and live a mundane life day after day." At the top of his voice, Caishen yelled at his brother. "You told him that if that was the life he wanted for you then he might as well take a knife and drive it through your heart. That night you were found unconscious in a hotel room, you...."

"I was drunk." Bo grabbed Caishen's hands and looked into his eyes. Intensely, he said it again, "I was drunk. Everything that happened that night, it was because I was drunk and had bad friends so I made a few mistakes. Do you really think that I would be so selfish to off myself and leave you, mother, our grandparents and An alone?"

Caishen's hands relaxed and he let go of his brother. He heaved a bit and he searched his pocket for some of those black pills that Alix had given him earlier. She said they were good for calming nerves and his needed some calming, desperately.

He had been carrying around that fear, that secret and that burden for a very long time.

Bo looked at his younger brother meanwhile and everything that he had missed started coming together. Dry laughter escaped his mouth and he shook his head. "So that's why you did it." he said and laughed wistfully.

"What?" Caishen asked him.

Bo run a hand through his hair and he cursed. "I really need a fucking smoke."

"Don't do that in my car, my wife will probably smash the windows if she smells it."

Bi Cang gave him regular updates on things Alix liked and things she hated. Handsome men, she liked, cigarettes, she didn't.

"What were you saying anyway, what did I do?" he asked.

"Do you remember when you were twenty two?" Zhang Bo asked him.

Caishen shook his head. That was one year of his life which he didn't like thinking about often. It was one year that was filled with the beginning of regrets in his adult life.

"Don't lie, we both know that you do." Bo told him. "It's the age when every child of the Zhang family on the successful completion of their first degree gets a year off to do whatever they wish with their life."

"So what?" Caishen replied in a low voice.

"You were always willing to work for the family company unlike me so everyone was sure about your eventual destiny. Everyone knew that you were looking forward to that year. You had planned to travel around the world taking photographs and visiting as many ancient buildings as possible. You were not going alone at that. You had a girlfriend back then....what was her name, Lai Yanfang. She is now...."

"Zhang Bo." Caishen called his brother in a deep voice. that carried a warning.

"Oh, sorry, I won't mention her." Zhang Bo twisted his lips as he apologized. Fangfang as she was commonly referred to was another sour point that his brother forbade anyone from talking about. "The point I am making is that you planned to travel the would and do something you were so passionate about. Grandfather told me to return home around that time and take on my duties as a manager in Zhang group or Zhang construction. We had that fight in his study. I had no idea that you heard everything that was said between us. The next day, when I was walking in the hospital corridor after the unfortunate incident I saw you tossing something in the trash can."

Zhang Bo touched one of his pockets and brought out a sleek leather black wallet with a diamond stud in the shape of the Zhang company label.

Out from the wallet he pulled out a plane ticket that had been folded and unfolded so many times. Over time, some of the words had started fading and it had been torn in some areas.

"You threw away your plane ticket and then shut yourself in one of the bathroom stalls and cried your heart out. I fetched the ticket out of the trash and sat in the next stall, crying silently as I listened to you sobbing. My heart was breaking because I knew what decision you were about to make but I was selfish and desperate, longing for my own freedom out of the shadows of our family.

The next day, grandmother told me that you were willing to take over Zhang construction. That you were willing to give up your one year as long as I retained my freedom." Zhang Bo cackled bitterly, a look of intense sadness on his face. "I should have stopped you."

"It was my choice." Caishen said strongly.

Bo shook his head and said, "I pushed you into it. I was selfish and I allowed you to give up your own dreams, the woman you...."

"Zhang Bo!' Caishen warned him again.

Zhang Bo's lips thinned and he kept quiet. Silence hang between the two brothers, heavy and thick, filled with guilt, regret and sadness for both of them.

Bo lowered his eyes and said, "As if that was not enough, I had a son and again, you stepped up and took responsibility..."

Caishen lowered the window of the car on his side, grabbed the old plane ticket out of Zhang Bo's hands and tossed it out of the window.
