Chapter 334: The protective maid

The room has a solemn mood, the curtains rustling lightly as the breeze blew in, whispering the song of spring. The weather was nice today; the sun was high in the blue sky, and clouds were moving slowly. It wasn’t going to rain anytime soon.

Abrielle didn’t know when last she had to admire things as simple as this. The aroma of the food in front of her waffled to her nose. Her eyes were watering when last she had such a good meal.

She didn’t wait for an invitation or anything else and dug in immediately. It tasted like heaven a stark difference from the sour soup and stale bread she had been eating for weeks

Everything melted in her mouth; she took her time to enjoy the food, munching it slowly to get every bit of flavour before swallowing.

She savoured the smallest things now. "You must have a great appetite. Please have some juice." Evelyn said, pouring a glass of fruit juice for the princess.

Abrielle nodded. She didn’t even have the time to drop her cutleries and just leaned towards the glass to take a sip. It tasted heavenly, she finally appreciated those lonely meals she had in the castle.

It might have felt lonely but she did have the best food. "Be careful, or you might choke," Evelyn warned, but it was too late. Abrielle turned to the side and started coughing.

"Pardon me." She cleared her throat.

"It’s fine, it must have been hard. The physician diagnosed you with extreme stress, exhaustion and malnutrition. You were too tired to wake up after working yourself out." Evelyn explained; Abrielle stopped eating, her mind trailing away.

"It was truly difficult. I guess you have an idea since you were sold by your family." Abrielle mentioned and Evelyn’s eyes dulled.

"Those were unpleasant memories, but his highness wiped the entire operation the same way he took care of everyone in that base," Evelyn explained. She was sold as a slave by her family. freeweɓnøvel.com

It was a long story but they were having money issues despite being nobles. There were other ways to get the money, but her stepmother, being her Father’s legal wife, always saw her as an eyesore.

She didn’t let the opportunity waste for her to get rid of the bastard girl born from a maid.

"Do you mind if I ask why you changed your name from Cassandra?" Abrielle asked and Evelyn was taken aback. She sighed.

" I don’t have an issue with that. Cassandra Desper was the only thing tying me to that family. Besides I don’t want the Desper family knowing their bastard daughter is still alive. His Highness gave me the name Evelyn, although he still calls me Cassandra, which I never understood why." She answered, making Abrielle chuckle.

"That sounds like something he would do," Abrielle added.

Evelyn’s eyes then went to the window; it was left wide open because Cedric insisted Abrielle needed enough air. "Not to poke your old wounds but what happened to Zoltana?" Evelyn mentioned then she felt Abrielle go stiff

Scared that the princess was offended she quickly apologized. "I am sorry if I was prying too much."

Abrielle shook her head and then continued eating. "No, it’s fine. The same question was on my mind. The last time I saw Zoltana was the night of the spring festival. I don’t even know if she is alive or dead."

The room went silent again, Evelyn’s mind was deep in thought as she watched Abrielle eat. The princess finished her meal and then reached out for the juice. She finished the glass before picking up a napkin to dab his lips

Her table manners are flawless. At times, she gets confused if she is Hazel or Abrielle because it feels like they are truly the same person.

"Evelyn," she called out.

Evelyn was startled by the sudden call. Her eyes quickly snapped from the window to the Princess. "Yes, your Highness", she answered.

"What happened at the death’s bite base? I can’t remember anything from that night." She asked, something flickered past Evelyn’s eyes.

She swallowed hard before speaking. "I don’t have many details of that night either. We didn’t even have much information about where we were going but it felt his highness knew exactly where. That night, the prince suddenly instructed us to double our pace before he went ahead. By dawn, we arrived on site. The entire forest surrounding the base was burnt. Not a single member of the death’s bite was to be seen...."

"...the only thing left were the unconscious patrons of the operation all unconscious around the maze and scattered all over the base. It seemed like they suddenly lost consciousness while escaping. We quickly took them into custody." Evelyn didn’t know why she gave Abrielle every detail when it was even suspicious how Cedric did it, but she felt Abrielle deserved to know as his wife.

"Are there any other things you remember?" Abrielle asked. She was surprised Cedric spared some people. It wasn’t his style at all.

"Well, I went into the forest and also found the slaves unconscious. Then, after walking for a while, I finally found his highness holding you in his arms as you slept. Sorry, I don’t have much information. I advise you to talk to the prince to find out now." Evelyn reached out to carry the tray from the princess’s bed.

Cedric was the only one who knew what happened in the end. "Is there any other thing you need my assistance with?" She inquired before leaving.

"By any chance do you have the keys?" Abrielle asked, wiggling the chain on her wrist. Evelyn shook her head before she replied. "Fortunately, only the prince has the keys, so you can’t get it from anyone. I know it’s not my place but you should try to talk out whatever the problem is between you. Don’t try thinking of running away because his highness gave me and your new addition personal attendants permission to use force if you try leaving him."

A smile that creeped out Abrielle graced Evelyn’s lips. It seemed like she would truly not hesitate to use force on Abrielle. "The period you were gone was tough on his highness and even tougher for his servants."

After her speech, Evelyn walked out of the room. The door closed behind her. "She does

have a grudge against me," Abrielle said as a matter of fact.
