Chapter 298: Guilt

There was a performance going on in the middle of the square after the lanterns were lit. It was one of the highlights of the night, a lantern show.

Of course, neither Cedric nor Abrielle could care less about that; Abrielle was cursing her fate while her husband was silent, which was a bad sign. She had no excuse whatsoever for her behaviour. She couldn’t reveal the fact Alfonso was a witness to what would be called an attempt on the queen’s life or the fact she possessed magic.

Only if she knew how much he knew about her. Cedric suddenly stopped moving causing her to crash into his back. She was still confused when Cedric suddenly wrapped his hands around her as if he was protecting her from something while his eyes darted around.

Abrielle, who was nestled in the protective embrace of the same man who she thought was mad at her, was puzzled but not completely lost. She had an idea of what was happening.

Cedric’s eyes darkened as they narrowed on a lantern used by the performance; it happened so fast he couldn’t raise an alarm.

There was a large explosion covering the entire performance just as Cedric suspected the sorcerers were going to target the performance. Chaos unissued everyone panicked and started to flee the scene, of course, lives were immediately lost from the explosion, and more might be lost from the stampede.

Cedric shielded her from the explosion that happened not too far away. This was only the beginning. "We need to get you to safety, the sorcerers are attacking." He said Instinctively thinking of her safety first.

Cedric swept her off her feet before she could scream and started to weave a way through the crowd. The joyous celebration instantly turned into something of a nightmare.

Another explosion went off, this time targeted at the town hall building. Debris was flying around. Abrielle was curled in Cedric’s arms, her face buried on his shoulders.

"This will be over before you know it." She heard Cedric reassure her; he seemed concerned, thinking she was scared, but she wasn’t. More explosions went on, and the knights tried to evacuate the citizens while they searched for the sorcerers who were attacking from the shadows.

Abrielle was not scared. Instead, guilt kept on eating her. Why was he putting her safety first above his duty or even Callista? She was the cheating wife.

She could not understand Cedric’s actions, but Cedric was able to successfully take her from the square where chaos was centred. The streets were also rowdy, Abrielle could immediately note some buildings that were engulfed by flames.

Close to the carriage, Evelyn was already waiting with Zoltana. "Head for the castle immediately, I will send someone to give a hand." He instructed Evelyn who already understood the situation. Zoltana gave a fleeting glance at Abrielle, who was curled in Cedric’s embrace, before rushing to open the door for the prince.

"We will try our best to keep her safe, " Evelyn assured. Axel appeared running from the square. "Elias is already coordinating the knights." He informed Cedric that was occupied with Abrielle’s safety at the moment to give a reply.

He placed her in the carriage and then quickly placed a peck on her forehead. "You will be safe at the castle. " He assured her about to leave. Abrielle grabbed his hand stopping him from leaving.

Her hand was shaking, his brows furrowed. He thought she was scared; he had to get into action, but she came first. That felt right to him. He clasped her palms in his hand and then placed a kiss on it, trying to soothe her nerves.

"You don’t have to be scared," his voice was soothing, and his palms warm, her eyes stung. He was startled because he did not understand why she wanted to cry. Panic filled his eyes. "What is wrong? It’s just the sorcerers attacking and we were expecting it. Everything is under control." He held her face.

Abrielle shook her head. "I am not scared but confused", she paused before adding. "I thought you were mad at me, why are you..."

Cedric didn’t let her finish, he sealed her lips with a quick kiss that left her weak. "I am still mad, more than I can describe but this isn’t the time. Your safety is paramount. When this is over we will sort things out." That was his reply before he left her. Her heart ached; this wasn’t fair. Why was he doing this to her?

He was making it hard for her to hate him. Cedric left the carriage and his eyes fell on Axel, "accompany Abrielle back home and ensure her safety before returning." He instructed his second in command.

Axel was startled but didn’t refute. Evelyn alone was more than enough to protect Abrielle. She was the second strongest in Cedric’s ranks, but he had this unsettling feeling. Axel nodded, then boarded the carriage, sitting on the Coach man while Evelyn and Zoltana accompanied the princess in the carriage.

He watched the carriage roll away before turning his attention to the destruction. This was just perfect timing.

The carriage made its way through the carriage, and Abrielle’s head was bowed the entire ride. She knew this was going to happen. She had written that the sorcerers launched a major attack during the spring festival. During this chaos, Alfonso was killed by the noble who hid his involvement because of the chaos

"We will soon arrive at the bridge," Evelyn informed Abrielle who had been quiet the entire ride.

She was worried the princess was disturbed by the attack. "There is no need to worry, the prince is more than capable of handling this. He has fought worse." She assured Abrielle unknown to her the princess was far from worried about Cedric

The carriage crossed the bridge, joining the mainland and the inner island. It was calmer on the inner island. They got into a forest apart until the carriage came to a sudden halt, the horses wanting to turn around when a fireball exploded on the path.

The Coach man tried to escape through another route then it happened. Arrows came flying in from different directions. They were under attack.
