Chapter 294: Their wishes

Alfonso led Abrielle through a shortcut back to the square, she was not familiar with any of the roads in the city yet she chose to trust him

The music got louder the further they walked through unconventional routes that would seem eerie on a regular night, but because it was the festival, the entire city was lit up. No one would do anything stupid close to Alfonso.

Soon, they arrived at the main road; the music and cheers were very loud, appearing from a narrow street; Alfonso and Abrielle immediately mixed with the crowd that stood at the side of the main road watching the parade.

"Wow, it’s so beautiful," she heard a little girl chime; she was sitting on an older man’s shoulder, which Abrielle guessed was her father from their uncanny resemblance. The girl was excited, pointing out different performances; one made the girl squeal out in excitement.

It was a lady dancing with loops that were on fire, Abrielle was even stunned at the sight. The performer’s dance was rather seductive and very skilled.

"Father, I want to be a dancer like her," the girl naively chimed in, making her father chuckle at her words. Another lady stood by their side carrying a younger boy who was asleep, face twisted at her words.

"How can you wish to do something so dangerous and shameful? She is dressed too seductively. A proper lady won’t want that life." The mother reprimanded the girl with a stern voice and the girl almost burst into tears if not for her mother’s eyes telling her. If you cry I will give you a better reason to cry.

The exchange was hilarious. Abrielle could not help but laugh, and reluctantly, she turned her attention back to the performance. Alfonso watched her every reaction, how her eyes sparkled when she saw something exciting or how they softened at an exchange similar to the small family.

The parade was beautiful; there were even some magicians, who were mages that performed low-tier spells for entertainment. Only a few possess magic in this world, so to common folks, these little spells were a great sight.

Because of the crowd, Abrielle could barely see the parade, so she had to stand on her tiptoes. "Why is everyone so tall?" She company bitterly.

"They are not tall but you are the one that is short." Alfonso sneered at her. Abrielle pouted at his words. She wasn’t shot, her height was fine for a woman. He was just tall standing at over 190cm.

"Tsk," she clicked her tongue trying to ignore him. She really wanted to see more, but unfortunately, she could not go to the front because she was Abrielle Nightshade and could only watch from behind.

Alfonso rolled his eyes, then grabbed her free hand, pulling away before she could react. She pulled her through the crowd, towards the square. They entered the main pavilion square through a side entrance and found an entrance to the city hall.

Abrielle was a bit nervous knowing she might run into Callista or Cedric here. Why did it feel like she was a cheating wife when she wasn’t doing that? She was just trying to survive. Some sacrifices have to be made, even if it means losing her reputation.

Alfonso found a quiet balcony that gave a good view of the parade; Abrielle’s eyes sparkled, seeing everything clearly from a distance. "It is more beautiful than I thought." She gushed, a carefree smile crossing her lips.

The parade procession was getting closer to the square again, she could already spot the crowd carrying their lanterns they were ready to light any moment from now.

"Eleanor went all out this year and invited performances from outside Darconia." She heard Alfonso mention from her side.

Abrielle giggled remembering how Rebecca was complaining about the festival being over the top. Talking about Rebecca, she could spot her mother in the square with her father; she didn’t know what her mother was saying, but from her countenance, she was sure she was gossiping about another noble and poor Pierre had no choice but to listen. freewebnøvel.com

"She sure did. It is almost time." Abrielle mentioned. Several people had started to bring out their lanterns, and the parade was almost back. Her eyes drew to the large tower clock that was on a hill on the east side of the main city where everyone could see. It was almost midnight.

Everyone was excited waiting for the stroke of midnight. Abrielle moved from the balcony rails, then held her lantern in both hands, giggling. This was a magical moment in the book she wanted to relive.

The clock struck midnight, and its deafening sounds sliced through the air, silencing everyone. All eyes were drawn to the west balcony where Kaiden and Eleanor were seated. Kaiden rose from his seat carrying his lantern followed by Eleanor.

No words were said, he raised the lantern high for everyone to see. "May your wishes this year come true." Kaiden declared then the lantern lit up. No fire was needed, he let go of it and it flew up. Eleanor didn’t do something similar over placing a kiss on the lantern before it lit up and she let it go flying up

The lanterns were made with special magic stones and lit up after the user made a wish. It was based on willpower. The magic stone then ignites and starts to burn, one does not need to possess magic to use it.

After the queen lit her lantern, several other lanterns of different colours lit up and started to fly to the sky. It was a beautiful sight. Abrielle’s emotions were a mix of nervousness and excitement. She places her forehead on the lantern making a silent wish.

Her lantern lit up, it was purple in colour. "Oh my.." she gushed as it lit up. She let go of it hoping her wish would come true. Alfonso also lit his lantern which flew up to meet the sea of lanterns that were like stars.

"What did you wish for?" He asked her, his gaze drawn to her. A soft smile lingers on her lips. "I wish to see many more years to come and happiness." It seemed like a simple wish but she knew it meant a lot to her

"How about you?" Abrielle asked, her gaze on him. Her blue eyes met his hazel eyes. He smiled at her, the music resumed, and loud, deafening fireworks also flew up to light the sky to accompany the lantern.

Alfonso spoke and her smile slowly fell. She was too stunned.
