’End him,’

The words repeated in Cedric’s mind, it wasn’t the voices that tried to manipulate him. That wasn’t the case. It was his thoughts, his darkest desire to always end Lucian.

The biggest thorn in his eyes was just a bit away. He could already feel victory. Lucian was still stunned and the entire arena held their breath. It felt like if they breathed, they would miss it.

Cedric’s eyes turned pitch black as he charged, blinded by his dark desire. In a state of shock, Abrielle jolted from her seat at the same time as Eleanor. Cedric could not kill Lucian here.

She didn’t want to imagine the consequences of that action. It might seem hopeless and pointless. Abrielle already recognized the killing intent Cedric was eluding.

"DON’T DO IT, PLEASE DON’T!!!!" Abrielle screamed; under normal circumstances, he couldn’t hear her voice when she was so far off. Her desperate cries were covered by the crowd

Cedric froze for a split second, what Lucian said replayed in his mind. His actions could end but they hurt Abrielle more. If he kills Lucian it might mean her death. In the chaos, he heard her voice clearly. The image of her face flashed in his eyes.

Cedric changed his momentum, turning his sword to the hilt. In one final sweep, he knocked Lucian to the ground. He stood by Lucian, his head clearing and his eyes turned in her direction. She was far away from him.

"It is over," Eleanor gasped, her chest tightening seeing her son’s defeat. How did this happen? Abrielle’s eyes met Cedric despite the distance. She could not see his face covered by the mask clearly due to the distance but her legs lost all strength.

She fell back on her seat, a lone tear running down her eye. The Arena went silent.

"He was truly going to kill his brother." the diplomat from Heliosia was seated by the side of the mysterious stranger who helped Abrielle during the masked ball.

The stranger’s eyes were on the princes. He had been diligently watching the fight from the start. Although this was a friendly fight, it almost turned dark as both parties had avoided using magic.

"At least we know who the true threat is. I understand why Kaiden chose the other. It is not just because one has a more favourable birth." The stranger stated his observation.

Everyone knew of the secret rivalry that was spoken in hushed tones but they didn’t expect Cedric to perform such a stunt.

For a moment, no one could even breathe.

Queen Eleanor was still on her feet, her mouth slightly open in disbelief. Her hands trembled at her sides. "Kaiden, did you see that? Your bastard almost killed my Lucian." Her face was red with fury as she laid the accusations.

Kaiden’s face was dark; he was in disbelief. Cedric almost made such a mistake. "He was lost in the battle for a moment." The king shrugged off Eleanor’s accusations.

Callista and Bernice, who were by the Queen’s looked as if they had seen a ghost. They muttered the same word simultaneously. "Lucian."

Abrielle’s hand was on her chest, her heartbeat roaring in her ears. She almost died because of the shock. This wasn’t supposed to happen. " This wasn’t how it was meant to end. It was not the plot, why did Cedric..." She shook her head as her head thought about the situation

"That is not possible, Abrielle; there has to be an explanation." Her thoughts finalized.

Lucian... lost?

Cedric turned, his face pale. His grip on his sword tightened. He watched the barrier around the duel fall with a hiss of magic. The sky had gotten dark with a cloud hanging over the sky.

Lucian remained on the ground, staring up at the sky, chest rising and falling, not just in exhaustion but disbelief. "What happened?" He asked himself

There were no cheers, no applause. Cedric disappeared through the exit. Lucian slowly got on his feet and also exited the arena.

The arena remained deathly. This was the least predicted end.

Only when Cedric vanished from view did the stunned crowd begin to murmur again.

"What just happened?"

"He... he defeated the crown prince..."

"He didn’t even use magic."

"He was going to kill Lucian "

Words started to spread around the audience.

Queen Eleanor sat back down slowly, her face pale. Her knuckles were white and she gripped her armrest.

"What was he thinking?" Alfonso could not help but ask Karissa, who was by his side. She didn’t have any answers. Abrielle rose from her seat, her eyes met Alfonso for a fleeting moment.

The duel was over and it was time she left. The princess exited the arena.

A lantern festival was going to be held tonight to celebrate the end of the rose duel. It was the biggest celebration of the spring festival.

It was during the festival the winner of the rose duel would be given the rose. The celebration was going held in the capital at the central square.

Despite the shocking end of the Rose duel, people were still excited about the festival. Abrielle was getting ready for the festival, there was a long selection of dresses to pick from

Her mind was not into the preparations but she had to go along with it.

"Which colour do you prefer?" Evelyn asked Abrielle, who she realized was lost and absent-minded. Abrielle was staring at the dress but she did not have the least interest.

"Any dress would be fine." She answered. Evelyn nodded seeing the princess was not interested. She signalled the maids with her eyes to excuse the princess. They listened and left with the pile of clothes.

The door was closed behind them almost immediately. It was opened again and someone stepped out. Abrielle’s back was against the door, she was seated on a soft chair backing the door.

"If you have something to say, just say it, or you can just leave." She snapped, irritated by the gaze at her back.

"I wasn’t expecting you to jump into my arms to welcome me but I guess it is fine." Her shoulders froze.
