Chapter 246: Ready

Arren was only looking at Spade with confusion in his eyes.

"Spade?" He called the alpha’s name again after a few seconds, but he didn’t respond. He was really curious about this key.

Although deep inside of him, Arren was also not convinced that it was a key for something since it really didn’t look like a key to open something at all but like jewelry in the shape of a key.

"What’s this for?" he repeated his question, slightly waving the key. Arren’s eyes didn’t leave the alpha, as though wanting to read his expression, but Spade’s face still looked calm as ever.

Instead of Spade answering, the Duke’s voice sounded shocked.

"Your Majesty?" the duke called Spade, which made Arren turn at his father, his brow knitted, becoming even more baffled as he returned his gaze again to the alpha.

With the two looking at him, there was only a trace of a smile on Spade’s lips. He opened his mouth and leisurely answered Arren’s question.

"That key... I’ll tell you later about it."

Arren cocked his head and looked even more confused. "Why does it need to be later? Why not now?" he asked, somehow urgent since he didn’t know the reason why it needed to be later.

This urgent question was also because of his father’s reaction; he sensed something was odd about this.

However, Spade still remained calm. Arren couldn’t read anything in his expression, as though everything was as per usual, which made this situation even more odd.

With a smile on his face, Spade reached out and held Arren’s hand as he gave him a squeeze. "I still need to ask you a question later."

"A question?"

Spade only smiled as an answer. And this aroused his curiosity even more.

"What question is it? Can’t you ask me now?" Arren urged Spade.

As though his expressions were truly entertaining to Spade, he chuckled, which made Arren pout and glare at him.

"This is my gift, right?" he inquired, narrowing his eyes.

This time, Spade laughed hard and nodded as he confirmed. "Of course, it’s your gift. Only for you."

The suspicion and curiosity in Arren’s eyes at Spade’s confirmation didn’t lessen but rather deepened. There was really something in Spade’s expression that he couldn’t pinpoint. Arren’s gaze then turned to his father, who now looked calm again, as though his reactions earlier were all a lie.

"Then, what should I do with this gift?" Arren honestly didn’t know what to do with this gift that really looked expensive but seemed to have little usage aside from safekeeping. He then looked over the alpha once more.

His eyes met with Spade’s amber ones. Arren’s gaze showed he wanted answers even though he knew there was no way he would get it seeing the alpha so adamant about his decisions.

"Just keep it for now?" he voiced out again. In fact, it was obvious that it was the only thing he could do for now, as this gift seemed incomplete for reasons he didn’t know.

Spade, who was still holding his hand tightly and watching him with a fond gaze yet amused, had his lips smiled widely.

"Mm, keep it as... It’s yours now." Spade spoke deeply; his expression was as usual, but there was something in his eyes as though what he said had a deeper meaning.

Arren’s brow rose, and since he couldn’t get answers, he decided to trust him for now. It wasn’t like Spade’s gift would put him to harm. In fact, seeing Spade becoming so mysterious and his father’s reaction to this gift, Arren’s curiosity and anticipation had reached their peak.

"Of course, it’s mine. You gifted it to me." Arren nodded his head, playing along; it wasn’t like there was something wrong with his statement.

Spade’s lips curled in satisfaction. "Yes, it’s yours," he repeated.

And while Arren was extremely curious about the function of that key aside from being a fancy and expensive-looking key engraved with diamonds and jewels, their dinner continued normally.

And it ended with all of them having a smile and relief on their faces. It was nice to have this time together, even if only for a moment.

Even if Arren was feeling reluctant about it, the night had to end, and they needed to face reality the next day. His father became busy again, as he was also needed to coordinate with the nobles and military.

It was even more so for Spade; some work and meetings that waited for him in his absence in the past few days because of Arren’s heat had to be dealt with.

Arren also got the information that the situation on the frontlines had become tense in the past few days, and it seemed the final confrontation for the territory was not that far.

As for him, he was back to his routine in the palace, and that included his talk with Ms. M. The older woman had not left the palace, and she had been waiting for Arren to prepare and become ready for their hypnosis session.

There was no way of knowing whether they would succeed in uncovering his deepest memories or whether, if they indeed succeeded, nothing would happen to Arren. It was truly a risk, but Arren was determined to do it.

He knew that prolonging this issue would only be a burden, not only for him but even for those around him who were worried for him. His state was like a time bomb that was ready to explode if triggered; he had to prevent it from erupting in the worst-case scenario.

"Have you been well, Young Master?" Ms. M welcomed him with a warm greeting in their usual place. The older woman still emitted a gentle and comfortable feeling that let Arren relax considerably.

Arren also smiled warmly and sat next to her. "Yes, Ma’am. I’m always well." He always couldn’t help but address her formally, although he was already casually talking at her.

Indeed, as Ms. M observed him, Arren looked healthy, as his rosy cheeks and sparking phoenix eyes emphasized his ethereal appearance even more.

The smile on Ms. M’s lips widened, and the elder’s voice had a teasing tone as she spoke. "It seems His Majesty is really taking care of you, Young Master. You’re blooming."

Arren’s ears heated up, but his grin widened, and he didn’t deny it. Although he comprehended the underlying meaning behind the elder’s words, he was only flushing slightly; he wasn’t that ashamed to be teased about his relationship with Spade. He was even proud of it.

The two of them conversed warmly for a few minutes; it had become their norm since the first time, as they knew they always had a heavier conversation waiting for them later.

After multiple sessions or conversations, Arren had become comfortable as well, especially with telling the elder what was on his mind. In a way, he was beginning to trust her with his troubles, although some of his secrets were not meant to be said casually. Aside from that, he told her some things that he might think could help prepare his mind to open his deepest subconscious.

As the few minutes passed, it was Arren who broke the seemingly peaceful and comfortable conversation.

"Ms. M, I’m ready." Arren paused, his expression turning serious. Although he had come prepared, he was still nervous. He took a deep breath and then continued, his eyes burning with determination. "Let’s do it."

Ms. M froze and was taken aback. She stared at Arren as though assessing his state to see if he was indeed ready, but seeing his expression, the elderly woman also sighed and turned solemn.

"If that’s the case, let’s start."
