Chapter 229: Wins and Losses (2)

Levin’s convoy was forced to a halt once they were also caught up by the traffic at one of the checkpoints. He roamed his eyes around and witnessed the rising tension in the area among the civilians. Some were shouting and cursing at the authorities, asking them to hurry up the process.

His eyes drooped, and his hands subconsciously clenched. Was this what you wanted, Father? He kept asking over and over, but none of his questions were answered.

While Levin was on his way to the possible location where he could meet his father, Spade was actually watching the chaos that was happening at the checkpoints. The moment that the reports rushed in, they had already reached Spade’s ears.

In his silence, Ace only stood by his side, but it could be noticed how there was sweat forming on the alpha’s forehead, yet he didn’t dare to leave his position, and all he could do was endure Spade’s pheromones that were tinged with dangerous pressure.

Although Spade kept a composed and calm demeanor on the surface, his heart had been burning with anger for a long time. His pheromones became thick and heavy as he suppressed his emotions.

This was also what he hated about his position. Spade couldn’t let the anger overtake his mind as he had to command the thousands of forces under him. His emotions shouldn’t get the best of him, or else it would be even more of a disaster, which he couldn’t afford.

He stared at the part of the monitor where the commotion at one of the checkpoints was playing, while at the side was one of the battlefields against the noble spy.

It was like a slap on the face—a terrible slap, even. Spade had truly detonated the chaos himself, and he was suffering the consequences firsthand. He didn’t regret his decision, as war was inevitable and he needed the upper hand the most.

However, seeing how the opening he orchestrated was only fighting against his land rather than the organization, he knew that the shadow of the leader was like a big rock that made him uncomfortable for some reason.

Spade steeled his heart; he was aware that this was only a small scale for more battles that had to come. And yet, he couldn’t be blamed for being so furious that he wished he was the one tracking the marquis instead.

To calm his nerves, he clenched and unclenched his left hand while also gripping it tightly from time to time. His eyes then shifted to the camera, where the location of the west National Road exit was reflected in his eyes.

His eyes narrowed. Was your guess right, Levin? Nevertheless, he could only watch. This was a mission, but also a test. Can his cousin really go against his parents once he has already faced them? Spade trusted him, but he was aware of how hard this was for Levin.

"Make sure our forces are protecting the civilians." Spade wasn’t hoping to capture the marquis this time; what he only wanted was his aunt. "Tell them they don’t need to engage with the other party too much but prioritize the safety of the citizens first."

Like his plan, he would capture the spies first, and he wasn’t intending to stretch the claws of war in the capital yet. Their preparation was not enough; Spade still needed to stall for more time while cleaning his backyard as he did so.

Ace breathed and solemnly answered, "Yes, Your Majesty."

As Spade was waiting for the situation to progress, he shifted, and his mind wandered to Arren’s side. The pressure surrounding him significantly dissipated at the thought of his omega; there was even a twinge of worry that flashed in his amber eyes.

"Is Arren now talking to Ms. M?" Spade blurted out. As one of the oldest agents in Black Intel, he also recognized her as one of his advisors. He trusted her ability, but at the same time, he was still concerned about what was going to happen if Arren’s trauma were triggered carelessly.

Ace stiffened at the mention of Ms. M.; the time when they all trained their mentality under the old woman’s supervision seemed to flash back in his mind as he shivered. But he was forced to shake them off as he needed to answer the monarch.

"Yes, Your Majesty. Young Master Arren is now talking to Ms. M, and she has yet to alert us." Not being alerted was a good thing since that meant Arren’s trauma was not triggered.

Spade still couldn’t be fully at ease, and when it came to Arren, he could never take them lightly. However, he was forced to stop thinking about his omega as numerous reports soon began to rush in again from the monitoring department.

He took a deep breath and straightened in his seat. The air around him had once again turned tense, and this time not only Ace but the whole room felt it.

Numerous fights broke out in the capital, and it seemed this night was only getting started.

"Get down!" A shout caught the attention of everyone in the lobby, and before they could react, the sounds of gunfire had now erupted. Soon panicked cries and shouts overwhelmed the room as the people scrambled to get away.

But some were unfortunate, as they were shot and lifelessly fell to the ground. This scene was all reflected in the eyes of an incognito royal guard, who was also the one who alerted everyone but was too late.

His eyes were wide, and shock was written in his face, as though his soul had left him. Although he was indeed an elite royal guard, they were all still used to the relatively peaceful work environment, and he had yet to encounter a mission like this.

His mentality had indeed suffered a blow, and he stood like a fool in the middle of gunfire. Until a robust arm forcefully grabbed him and dragged him to a corner.

"Fuck, are you stupid?" he exclaimed then whispered, yet it was emphasized that it was no less than a silent shout, "Do you want to die?" The man peeked at the corner and then cursed, tightening his hold on the still-stunned royal guard before he talked at someone in his earpiece. "This is XR3; a fight broke out in the M hotel. We need reinforcements and medical assistance ASAP."

Soon a response came, asking them to wait and engage if they could. The man called himself XR3 cursed again, but he also peered into the corner and responded with gunfire.

"Hey!" He crouched down again and slapped the stunned royal guard. "Get over it! Shit!" He stopped as their hiding place was being bombarded with gunfire. With a series of curses, XR3 slapped the royal guard again, with much more force this time.

At this point, the stunned royal guard thought his head was about to fall off as he became dizzy, but it still worked on waking him up from being in a daze.

"I..." the stunned royal guard was still at a loss for words.

XR3 was not having it and again issued a row of curses. "Can you fucking pull yourself together or you will die here?"

The royal guard blinked, pursed his lips, and spoke in a low tone. "But... there are a lot of innocents who died."

XR3 breathed; he calmed himself, as he knew a rookie like this who had yet to see a real battlefield couldn’t be blamed.

"I know, and I’m angry too that there are civilians who are implicated in this mission." XR3 furiously shouted yet in a low, emphasized tone, "But are you also going to die without avenging the one who died unknowingly and not doing your responsibility on protecting them?"

He was already in a rush to talk, as the wall they were hiding from might get pierced through in no time, and they had to change locations, but XR3 couldn’t keep dragging a whole grown man while also making sure that he responded to the attack of the opponents. In other words, he couldn’t carry a burden with him.

"Remember who you are! This is our mission, and get your act together or you will die foolishly without doing any—ah fuck! I’ll kill these damn bastards!" XR3 shouted and peered again to respond, and some grunts were heard indicating how he killed someone.

However, what he said already woke up the royal guard. He held the gun in his hand, which was still trembling from the shock he got earlier, but he tightened his grip on the gun as though making sense of what XR3 said.

Right, I have to vent my rage on the people who mercilessly killed innocent people. I am a royal guard, sworn to protect my empire.

A new-found determination ignited in the man’s heart as he also peered into the corner and pulled the trigger to shoot. He was an elite guard after all and was adept at using the gun.

XR3 breathed a sigh of relief as his comrade, whom he only met at the start of this mission, pulled himself together. Although they had only known each other for over an hour, the two already had synergy as they both changed their hiding spots while responding to gunfire along the way.

Once they left the lobby and reached the second floor, both swallowed and gripped their guns hard. The bodies of the scared guests and even staff were all lying lifelessly in the hallways as they passed by.

One thing crossed their minds: I’ll kill them all.

These were all happening in the capital as the Marquis spread all the chaos he could to escape, and Spade gripped the armrest, fuming with rage.
