Chapter 223: Game One (3)

He was afraid that his omega father would do something riskier now that he had already found out who was the culprit behind his late father’s death. The probability of it happening was almost absolute, so he chose to hide it as long as he could.

Spade had forgotten that Empress Liviera had ears inside his forces, and it was only a matter of time before he discovered the truth.

Empress Liviera’s face was pale, despite the aggressiveness in his expression, and his hands also trembled, getting weaker with each passing minute, but his breath became hurried, indicating that something was already wrong with his condition.

"Please?" Spade again pleaded, begging for his father to understand him.

Empress Liviera was taken aback at first by this kind of tone, which even he had never heard from his son before. He admitted that after all these years, they had grown apart.

Somehow, a whisper deep inside of him told him to back down for now and think it over. Spade would most definitely have his reasons; his son wouldn’t betray him, and he would fulfill his promise.

However, that part that was influenced by his hatred and anger had already become victorious over his mind. He ignored that plea, and after a momentary pause, the aggressiveness in his eyes didn’t cease but instead became fiercer.

A furious roar came from the Empress once more.

"Why are you begging? You are the emperor! And now you’re pleading for these traitors? Spade, aren’t you ashamed even one bit?" It seemed Spade’s begging for him to rest and calm down had triggered something inside the Empress.

He tried to pull his hand away from his cousin again, and as he finally grew annoyed, His anger also extended to her, and he yelled at her face. "Why are you stopping me? You know how much I suffered all these years. And now you’re siding with them?"

The one holding her almost loosened, but as though determined, she tightened her hold on his arm. She was obviously guilty, as she didn’t raise her gaze or dare to meet Liviera’s eyes.

"I’m not siding with them. I’m only worried about you," she said while still bowing her head, with apparent worry in her tone.

But how could Liviera be reasoned out in this situation? The anger had already overwhelmed his mind, and his rationality was almost gone at this point.

"Reasons! If you can’t help me, then get lost! I don’t need you. I don’t need anyone, and I can take revenge by myself." Liviera didn’t scream these words, but his lower tone sent an even chilling sensation to everyone present. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

No one thought at this time that he could be joking; these were all his real thoughts and emotions.

Spade’s expressions further sank with each word that came out of his omega father’s mouth. He was the one, aside from Liviera’s cousin, who knew how suicidal his omega father’s mindset was when it came to his revenge for his husband.

This made him terrified. He had already done what he could. Spade tolerated his behavior, hoping that it might lessen his agitation to take revenge than if he intervened.

Empress Liviera bought spies within his subordinates, and while some were genuine that he kept his one eye closed even if he knew, some others were actually Spade’s men that he tasked to agree to be his omega father’s spy, but they were actually the newest addition for Liviera’s security and at the same time his ears on what was happening in his side.

He really thought that by turning a blind eye but also keeping a close eye on him, his omega father’s actions and state were still under control. However, now that he was watching him basically become delirious after discovering the culprit, Spade realized he had miscalculated.

There was no way to calm Liviera’s anger aside from seeing all the culprits in his husband’s death be killed before his eyes.

Spade firmly shut his eyes; it was one of the hardest decisions he would have in his life. If it were only him, it was only the last resort in case the worst-case scenario arrived. And now, he was already witnessing all the sanity of his omega father crumbling together with Spade’s.

After he opened his eyes, there was now a different light that flickered on them. Ignoring the terrible pain deep within him, he spoke with such decisiveness that there was no room for any rebuttal.

"Take Royal Mother in his room, and let the imperial doctors examine his condition." He paused, swallowing all the hesitation that still lingered on him, and continued, averting his eyes so he could say it. If not, Spade wouldn’t have the courage to complete his order.

"Empress Liviera will be strictly monitored, and he is not allowed to step out of the vicinity of his room until he finally recovers." It was basically saying the Empress would be imprisoned for an indefinite period of time until Spade withdrew his order.

This option had been on his mind as he was terrified of what his omega father could do for his revenge. He didn’t want to imprison his father in his room, but it was necessary. He could tell. If he was not monitored, he might sneak out of the palace and do something that could lead him into danger. This was also his form of protection, no matter how twisted it was.

Not only Empress Liviera was shocked, but everyone present. This order once again kept the silence in the room. Arren’s mouth even dropped slightly; he somehow thought he had misheard things, but after his mind had processed them, It was indeed what Spade had said.

Empress Lilviera was grounded in the palace! He said it lightly since he couldn’t bear to say the other harsher word.

"Y-You..." Empress Liviera seemed at a loss for words as well, and he couldn’t finish his trembling words.

"What are you doing? Heed my order!" Spade’s cold words with the apparent authority of a monarch reverberated in the room.

These words seemed to wake up Serrien and the Royal Guards; despite their hesitation, they needed to obey Spade, and they bowed to Liviera before they held him in the amrms, careful not to hurt him.

When he was already being held by the royal guards and ready to drag him out of the room, he also woke up from the daze and stared at Spade with a pair of disbelieving amber eyes.

"Spade, you won’t do this to me. No, Don’t you all dare touch me! Spade, tell them to stop. Listen to me now, son!" Empress Liviera forcefully tried to pull his arms back and stared straight at Spade, shouting at him.

But even after a few minutes, Spade didn’t look at him and only had his gaze fixed on the side that he needed to be convinced that Spade meant his order.

His eyes dimmed even with his fierce gaze; it was obvious he was affected by this order from Spade, who was seemingly too harsh a son could give his parent.

"You’re ridiculous!" It was not a shout; it was weak and almost in a hushed tone, but it was too emphasized to be overlooked. Empress Liviera averted his eyes and glared at the two royal guards holding him.

"You all don’t need to hold me. I’ll return to my room myself." His natural grace as an Empress for years revealed itself in his demeanor, but it not only made one in awe but gave a certain intimidating sensation to the two.

As he said, once the two let go of him, Empress Liviera calmly turned and walked out of the room. When he was already at the foot of the door, he stopped and opened his mouth to say something.

This nearly broke Spade’s facade, and he tried so hard not to approach his father and apologize for his order, but he controlled it until the end despite the despair that was rooting itself in his gut.

"Are you still my son?" he said before he took the last step and exited the room, leaving these words repeating in Spade’s mind, shattering his spirit in no time.

Spade leaned tiredly on the table. There weren’t any traces of his cold gaze earlier; there was only exhaustion and deep sadness.

Am I still his son? Spade questioned it for himself; the hidden meaning behind it almost tore all his defenses down and made him take a step back. Was he doing the right thing? Was his decision and approach to his aunt’s matter too soft or lacking in determination?

A part of him thought so. But whenever he thought about the thousands of forces around the empire ready for the operation and even the millions of his citizens that would be implicated in a sudden war, Spade knew he hadn’t made a bad decision. It was that there was never a right or wrong decision to begin with.

There were only two options: failure or success. And that made this whole thing more messed up than it already was. No matter what side he took in this game, there was always a casualty.

It was because, War was never a game.
