Chapter 222: Game One (2)

It was as though a haunting silence enveloped the room instantly, their minds having had time to process what they witnessed.

Arren, who was beside Spade, saw it even more clearly than the others and the sound seemed to be much louder in his ears. His hand abruptly covered his mouth amidst his surprised gasp.

Everyone held their breath, afraid that they might say anything after their minds had processed what happened. Arren glanced at the Empress, who had his cold gaze watching Spade before he shifted his eyes to the alpha, eyes filled with concern.

Spade moved his jaw, and slowly turned his head again in front as he met his Royal Mother’s furious gaze. He didn’t even bother wiping the blood in the corner of his lips after his teeth collided with the side of his cheek from that hard slap.

His amber eyes held no inquiry and were still calm, staring back. If he were to ask, the physical pain of that slap was in no way comparable to how he felt looking at how his Royal Mother looked at him at this moment.

He was furious beyond compare. Spade knew that; he already expected this to come once his omega father found out about the truth of his father’s death. However, he still chose to prevent telling him for much longer; if he could, he could hide it forever.

And now this was the consequence: seeing his Royal Mother’s eyes filled with hatred that was now directed at him. He thought he could still act calmly; Spade thought he was prepared.

The moment that slap landed on his cheek, and the dizzying pain he felt soon after, a realization dawned on him. He would never be prepared for the emotions that would pierce his insides all over again.

"How dare you?" Empress Liviera shouted again. Veins appeared on his neck, and he seemed to want to attack Spade again when his cousin held his hand tightly. At first, he tried to forcefully pull his arm away from her, but he had already grown weak, as though he had put all his strength into that slap earlier.

The corner of Empress Liviera’s eyes reddened as he seethed with anger, looking at Spade and letting out all the emotion he was feeling.

"You knew? That bitch is the one who killed my husband?" he yelled, his voice reverberating in the whole room. "The one who killed your father! And you never told me? How could you?" His voice was even getting louder with each word, and Arren was already getting worried about the Empress’ condition.

Empress Liviera seemed healthy on the surface, but he wasn’t young anymore, and excessive emotions could increase his blood pressure. Spade has the same concerns as him. Instantly, he grew alert, never minding his screams or the hatred his gaze was directed at him.

Spade took a step forward, trying to get close to his omega father. However, Empress Liviera didn’t let him, and he took a step back, avoiding Spade. The bitter taste it gave to the alpha only increased.

"You already knew! Spade! And now, she’s already escaped?" Empress Liviera’s amber pupils dilated in anger, and she pointed at Spade with much resentment in her eyes. "You promised me! You told me that you would help me give justice to your father’s death. No, you promised me we would kill them all." freewёbnoνel.com

The insanity in his eyes that were plagued with years of resentment and anger surfaced at once, and Serrien and the other royal guards could only lower their heads for them not to witness it any longer, yet it didn’t help much since they could still hear every word and every emotion contained within.

"B-But now," his teeth gritted. Tears also streamed in the corner of his eyes as the emotions surged like a flood. Empress Liviera’s breathing slowed down as his tone became lower. "Just because it’s Coreen? I don’t care! She killed my husband; she has to die!" He finished it again with a scream and cried all the emotions in his heart.

Spade’s eyes flashed in distress. He took a step forward again; he ignored Liviera’s protest and hugged his crying father. Empress Liviera even wanted to escape; he punched and slapped Spade’s chest and shouted for him to let go, but Spade seemed already deaf and numb, not minding them one bit.

He only embraced him tightly, not letting him escape until it was his omega father who grew tired and cried in his arms, mumbling how he broke his promise.

Everyone heard this scene; aside from Arren, all of them had their heads lowered while he seemed petrified as he stood and watched the two. Every second of the scene was engraved in his mind, and he couldn’t help but also feel the emotion and cry silently.

How cruel was fate? These were the times when he always questioned just what the future had plan for them beyond giving them despair and agony with every problem life gave them. Was there really hope waiting for them at the end once all of this was over, or was it still the same bottomless abyss?

The silence and muffled cries from the Empress shrouded the room for a few minutes. Eventually, he calmed down; at least his emotions weren’t so extreme that he couldn’t control them, so he had to cry them out loud, otherwise, they might explode inside him.

"Are you planning to exempt Coreen just because he is your ’good aunt, who is almost your mother?" There was sarcasm in his tone; he withdrew, and Spade let him. They stared directly into each other’s eyes again.

Despite being tired from crying, his hatred didn’t diminish in his eyes, and it remained headstrong. Spade sighed hopelessly inside; he knew this couldn’t end easily unless his Royal Mother got her revenge.

"I’m not exempting her. Aunt will still be subjected to punishments, Spade answered him.

Empress Liviera sneered and replied with a mocking laugh. "Not exempting her, but you’ll give her preferential treatment? Spade, she’s a murderer! What’s worse? She’s a psychopath who kills her brother!"

At this, Spade fell silent, and Levin at the side flinched. Since earlier, his heart was already bleeding listening to the Empress talk against his mom. However, he couldn’t refute them because they were the truth. But it was still painful regardless, especially the hatred the Empress had directed at his mom and even the intention to kill her.

Levin pursed his lips, anxiety written on his face.

Spade exhaled. He glanced at the people in the room and then at Liviera before him. His eyes carried his complicated emotions as they drooped downward.

"We’re still investigating something, and then I’ll do my best to find her and give justice to Royal Father." Spade didn’t want to promise anything, and he knew his omega father wouldn’t believe him anymore.

As expected, Empress Liviera scoffed and obviously didn’t trust his words. He gave Spade a glare, before his eyes happened to glance at Arren, who was silently watching them.

Arren was given a scare by this sudden eye contact; he was contemplating whether to meet his gaze or bow his head, afraid that his anger would also shift on him. His thoughts registered again in his expression as his face paled, and it seemed any minute he would run for his life.

In the end, the Empress only glanced at him and fixed his attention elsewhere. Before he could breathe a sigh of relief, another fierce howl came from the Empress. And this time, it was now directed at the alpha, also present in the room.

His anger now pointed to Levin, Princess Coreen’s son.

"You! How brave of you to stand before us, you son of that murderer?" He was about to launch an attack on Levin as well but was stopped by Spade as he stood between them.

Levin’s shoulders deflated; he chewed on his lips while bowing his head, not daring to meet Liviera’s fiery gaze. It was painful to be called the son of the murderer. And it even came from the aunt he also cared for. The Empress never treated him badly. Even when he was young, he also doted on him.

He understood that it was the omega’s emotion that had already overwhelmed his head, and he couldn’t care less about who anymore.

"Spade!" He exclaimed, his widened eyes constricting. "Why are you still letting that man here? He should be executed! His family is a traitor! And now you’re even protecting him? What’s wrong with you?"

Arren looked at Levin; he was having a hard time not comforting the alpha, whom he also treated as his friend. Empress Liviera’s words were way too harsh; however, he couldn’t blame him.

"Royal Mother, he’s not a traitor." Spade spoke, distress now evident in his tone from his then-calm expression.

The empress furrowed his brows and laughed insanely, as though he had heard a joke.

"You’re telling me a son of two traitors is not a traitor? Son, are you being brainwashed by them?"

Spade exhaled, looked at his aunt, and instructed. "Aunt, please, let the doctor come, and Royal Mother needs to rest." He decisively stopped the conversation. He was already getting worried from being hysterical about his omega father.

"What? Rest? No! If you can’t capture them, I’m the one who will do the order!" he shouted, but Spade had already nodded at the royal guards present, and the two nodded.

His Royal Mother could scream like that because of his emotions, but his heartbeat was already so fast that Spade was increasingly worried. Empress Liviera still refused to be held by the royal guards when Spade finally couldn’t help but plead with him.

"Royal Mother, Please?" he begged, his tone low as he stared at him. "I’m sorry," he continued in an aggrieved tone.
