Chapter 24: Chapter 24

Alexis hobbled over and dropped down on the concrete floor on her butt. She pulled her legs to her chest, burying her face in her knees and grabbing the toes of her bare feet.

"You okay, kid?"

"I wish I was. My back aches, and my hands feel like they are being punched by nails." She’d been carrying around heavy things the entire day, she was near tears.

"Well, there are only a few hours left and it’ll all be over. We’ll have a nice warm bath in that big tub, and I’ll even allow you to cuddle me to sleep, how does that sound?"

Alexis gave her an unimpressed tired look. ’Don’t I do that every day?’

"Looks like you don’t want it then."

Silence bubbled between the both of them before a sob racked through her. "I think he hates me."

"Who?"

’Keelion.’

"Why would you assume that?"

’He knows I’m not a beta, why would he still let me do this? I’m going to die if I do this one more week, I’m telling you, Reia. Why couldn’t he have made me work with the maids?’

"Alexis, he knows you’re not a beta, but the others don’t. Everyone believes you’re a beta cheated by nature, there is no way he could possibly make you work with the maids."

’Why not?’

"Because in this place, the betas, alphas, and omegas are separated. Omegas have a different quarter and betas and alphas can’t go over that side, not without permission. It’s for the complete protection of omegas. In case you’re unaware, Keelion is actually very protective of omegas for some reason despite how frightening he might seem. Wouldn’t it be weird to everyone if you a beta, joined them?"

Alexis blinked at her, dark, thick lashes wet with tears. "I suppose you have a point."

"Can you stop crying?"

"I can’t help it. It hurts all over, I can’t even move," she whispered. "I want to strangle myself to death or something. How long do I have to be like this?"

She sniffled, trying to hide the fact she was sobbing from the rest of the staff who were working.

"Alexis." Sereia sighed, golden eyes gleaming with concern. "I know it’s hard, but if you don’t do this, it’ll be over for the both of us. Forget me, but you’ll get hurt. I don’t want you to ruin things, we’ve worked so hard."

’So, I have to be like this for the rest of my life? Doing things I’m physically not capable of to live?’

"Do we have any other choice? We are thinking about your life—"

’I’d rather die at this point, Sereia. This isn’t being alive, it’s like hell.’

Sereia sighed softly. "But you won’t die. We are never going to go in that direction of thinking, alright?"

’You don’t understand how I feel.’

"I don’t, but I’ve been around you your whole life, enough for me to understand," she said, surprisingly in a caring tone. "You’re one of the strongest creations of our goddess, there has to be a reason you were born this way. The reason she created you this way is you could be special or something, and just because you don’t fit into the norms doesn’t mean you’re not."

’I appreciate you trying to make me feel better, but this is not it, Sereia. If anything, the moon goddess has to hate me or something.’ Alexis sobbed harder into the arms of her white working shirt.

Sereia moved closer to her, snuggling up to her. "You underestimate yourself a lot, kid. I mean, you’re the same girl who fought every day of her life to have the right to exist and live, and even now you’re still fighting and living. It’s not easy to pretend to be something you’re not. Give yourself credit, no one I’ve met has tried hard enough in life like you have. And yes, you are special. You think they wouldn’t kill to be able to talk to their wolf?"

"Right?" Alexis gasped a short laugh, rubbing her aching chest in circles.

"I’m here with you, kid, always. You’ll be fine, we will be fine. You and me."

Tipping her head back, Alexis breathed out, "I want a little sleep."

"Just a bit more and we’ll have a nice long sleep."

"Alexis!"

The sudden voice of Lyndon shouting her name snapped her back to reality and she lifted her head to watch him stalk towards her.

She quickly forced herself off the floor, despite the aching all over her body and the fact that the bottom of her feet hurt so bad, she felt like she was walking on hot charcoal.

"Help the team over there to move the oak wood."

"Huh?" She blinked past him at the stacks of fresh oak wood. "What are they—"

"There is a construction that needs to be done before the alpha reholds the gala. So get to work."

He left before she could complain, and Alexis watched her life dancing before her eyes.

"Kid?"

She didn’t answer and instead walked over on her bare feet, rolled up the sleeves of her shirt and tied the suit jacket around her waist.

The other betas glanced at her and each grabbed a wood so easily and left with it.

Alexis proceeded to do it the same way they did, only to drop the wood immediately. That grabbed Lyndon’s attention and the man pinched between his brows the second his gaze landed on her.

"Alexis, what the hell are you doing?"

"I’m sorry, it’s just a bit too heavy for me." What would be the point of lying? It was better she told the truth, just maybe the man will exempt her from this heavy lifting kind of work.

"What? You want to water flowers like some omega?" He glared at her.

If only you knew I’m worse than an omega. She gulped, swallowing down the embarrassment. "I could do that."

"Wow, you’re fucking hopeless, you know that?" He stared at her and his eyes fell to her blistered hands. "You’re a beta, yet you sit in the fact that you are this weak?"

She waved her hands immediately, ready to be defensive, but the man waved her off. "Go ahead and water the flowers then."

"Huh? I can do that?" She fluttered her eyes at him.

"Don’t make me change my mind, Mr."

Alexis frantically nodded her head and a smile finally emerged on her face for the first time since the entire week. She hurried off and picked up the watering hose.

"Well, kid, this is some relief."

"I’m starving, but this is better than lifting those pain-inducing objects." She rolled open the hose, turning it on and facing it towards the flowers of different kinds. "Do you think my mum is doing okay?"

"Why not? Keelion made sure of that, no? I’m pretty sure she’s perfectly fine. Better than she would have been living with that monster of a father you have."

"He’s not a monster, Sereia. He was...good to my mum, I think."

"Keep telling yourself that, girl. You’re too nice to accept that man for what he clearly was."

"That’s not it. It’s just—"

"What are you doing, barefoot?"

The sudden, startling, roughed-up voice had her jolting around, the spraying hose she held aimed directly at the person who’d spoken.

"Alexis, turn it off!"
