Chapter 16: Chapter 16

Alexis shook her head. "No."

Augustus eyed her, very intently before saying, "That woman is the alpha’s substitute mate. They’ve been in a relationship for a while now."

"Re...lationship?" Alexis felt like a heap of sawdust had cludged her throat as she choked the word out.

He glanced behind his shoulder and annoyingly glared down at her. "Thirteen years and the alpha hadn’t found his mate, what do you expect? He’s the alpha of the pack, not some random that can wait around even if it takes him a hundred years. A Luna is something he needs—it’s expected of him and Lady Althea is a great choice."

"I’m sure she is..." Alexis agreed, but there was no form of enthusiasm in her tone. She felt rather begrudged, the weird feeling in her chest negative as if it was displeasure.

But why would she be displeased? Sure, Keelion was her mate, but it didn’t mean they had anything between them—that much he’d made clear. He was going to get rid of her in probably a month, and then—

"He’s going to take her in as his Luna in a month."

She stilled at Augustus’s sudden words, eyes growing wide. "W...what?"

The man spared her a glance.

"The word has already gotten around, everyone is aware of it. It’ll be a busy time next month, so be prepared and fix your clumsiness, no one will tolerate it."

But Alexis was not hearing anything else he’d said. The only thing her head had been stuck on was the fact that Keelion Fane was going to take the blonde woman in as his Luna.

Didn’t that mean he would mark her and then she...

Her chest further constricted at the thought, and she looked down at Sereia, who was rubbing her fur against her leg.

"Calm down, kid. That won’t be happening. We’re his mate, Keelion wouldn’t take in someone else. Not so easily now you’re in the picture."

’But...’ She shook her head. ’No, it doesn’t matter.’

"What do you mean by that?"

’He’ll eventually get rid of us. Does it matter that he’ll be taking in another woman?’

Reia’s soulless golden eyes peered at her with laser focus. "Kid, what is wrong with you? Keelion Fane is our—"

"Move it, Alexis!" Augustus thundered so suddenly, that even Reia jolted.

He stormed towards Alexis with a pissed-off look in his violet eyes.

"Listen here, I’m not going to tolerate your clumsiness, your jumpiness, and certainly not your wandering thoughts. You are to be quick with whatever you are meant to do, and distraction is not needed here, not from you! Am I making myself clear?"

Alexis squirmed with discomfort, rapidly nodding her head.

"I understand."

He gritted out, "GET. TO. WORK."

She glanced in the direction he was pointing at and nodded, turning and walking off. She pushed the door open, poking her head in first to glance at the interior of what seemed like a hall.

Male staff were hurrying up and down, a bunch of boxes dumped on the floor. She stepped inside with Sereia and approached the man who looked like he was coordinating things.

Alexis couldn’t tell if he was an alpha or beta, as she didn’t have the ability to smell scents, not unless it was Keelion’s scent. But if she had to guess, the man was probably a beta. He was lean compared to Augustus.

"Who are you?" The man glanced at her, pink-colored iris pouring on her.

"Alexis," she said. "Alexis Ruderth."

"Oh." He nodded and shoved his hand into the pocket of his work suit. "Augustus has already mentioned you."

His eyes scrutinized her from head to toe. "Aren’t you a bit too..."

She blinked at him. "Too...what?"

"Petite for a beta?" He was sincerely confused, eyes running over her, an amused brow rising at the suit, which clearly didn’t fit her well enough. "Didn’t they take your measurements properly?"

"It was a hurried preparation, so Sir Augustus gave me whatever he could find," Alexis explained, chuckling weakly.

The man nodded. "I’m Lyndon, the head of staff."

"It’s nice to meet you, sir." She bowed slightly at him.

Lyndon brushed his fingers through the blonde strands of his hair, a welcoming smile on his face. "Just call me Lyndon."

She peeked up at him.

"Everyone does that," he added, then turned towards one of the workers who were approaching him.

"Lyndon, we need the number of boxes to take out," the worker said.

Lyndon nodded and turned to Alexis. He took out a cell phone, giving it to her. She furrowed her brows in confusion at him, not sure what to do with it.

"Calculate the boxes in here," he said, pointing around.

But Alexis kept staring at him, her lips stretching into a crooked smile. "Um...sir—Lyndon, I don’t really know how to use a cell phone."

The man gaped at her for what seemed like a long few seconds as if hoping she was joking, but when Alexis didn’t proceed to clarify, he blinked rapidly at her.

"What do you mean you can’t use a cell phone?"

"I’ve never used one...before."

He stepped closer to her. "How old are you again?"

"Twenty-two," Alexis responded.

"And you can’t use a cellphone?" he didn’t seem convinced. "Isn’t your father Ruderth Adolf, one of the richest men of our pack, that even works directly with the alpha?"

"He is."

"Then why don’t you, his son, have a clue about anything?"

"Oh...that is for personal reasons..." Alexis cleared her throat, lowering her gaze to Reia, who asked, "Why did you never use one of those things?"

’My father never allowed me to. He said it was for my safety and to make sure there was no way anyone would find out about me or what I was. Precautions.’

She shrugged.

Lyndon took the phone back from her. "Alright, help carry one of the boxes then. You should be able to do that at least."

She nodded and walked off to one of the boxes, bending to pick it up. However, when she did, something snapped so quickly in her waist, she had no other choice but to drop the box back, face screwed in pain.

"What is inside this?" She snapped her gaze to Lyndon who was gawking at her.

"Are you kidding me?" The man was too shocked, storming over to her. "What the fuck is going on with you? You’re a beta and you can’t even carry this. I mean, you look like a twig, but I’m pretty sure you have some strength in you, no? Why are you behaving like an omega?"

"I’m sorry," she apologized and rose to her feet, dusting her suit. "I just didn’t expect it to be heavy."

Lyndon furrowed his brows at her, eyeing her all over again. "Are you really a beta?"

"I am," Alexis answered too quickly. "Nature just cheated me, is all."

"Well, it sure did cheat you very badly. You’re the first weak beta I’ve ever met." He rubbed his temple in stress. "Why did the alpha even hire you? You can’t even be of use."

Alexis responded, "It was a favor for my father. He asked for me to work here."

He eyed her.

"Personal reasons," she added quickly.

Lyndon sighed under his breath. "Every day, they add loads of work on me. Now I have to deal with you too. Fine, leave the boxes, I don’t need you breaking the things inside of them. Go and—"

"Alexis!"

The voice belonged to Augustus, causing her to spin on her feet towards the door.

"Sir?"

"Come with me."

He left before she could ask why. Alexis slightly bowed to Lyndon and hurried off after Augustus. They trudged down the hallway until he stopped and knocked on a door.

"Come in." It was a female voice, one that she was sure she’d heard before.

"I smell trouble, girl," Reia mumbled.

Alexis followed Augustus into the room, where he left her, shutting the door. And when she lifted her head, she was met with a set of gray eyes peering her down. But that wasn’t what threw her off. It was the fact that the woman’s gaze was examining, scrutinizing as if she was trying to figure something out.

"What is your name?" the lady, Althea questioned.
