Rebirth as The Billionaire's Seventh Wife-Chapter 97: Suspicious of Sophia Morrison
Chapter 97: Suspicious of Sophia Morrison
Aurora smiled awkwardly, stunned as Sophia walked alongside her and linked their arms.
Despite her efforts to appear calm and friendly, a tiny flicker of annoyance toward this woman lingered in her heart.
"Aurora, there’s no need to feel anxious about meeting the rest of the family. If you’re afraid to talk to them, you can remain quiet and stay close to me," Sophia said softly.
Her words gave Aurora goosebumps because what Sophia said echoed Alex’s words.
"Thank you, Sophia. I’ll keep that in mind," Aurora replied with a smile, walking alongside Sophia as she listened to her talk about her lovely house.
Every word Sophia uses to describe this house brings back memories for Aurora, and with each one deepening her heartache, it makes her truly miss her father.
She keeps her eyes on her father, who follows behind Matthew Graystone. Occasionally, she attempts to look away, anxious that someone might notice her. Yet, it is challenging.
"Oh, right! I forgot to thank you, Aurora." Sophia tightened her grip on Aurora’s arms, eager to express how excited and happy she felt now.
"Thank me? For what...?" Aurora asked, confused. She couldn’t recall doing anything to assist her.
A warm smile spread across Sophia’s face once more as she said, "Oh dear, I thank you because of you... My son is willing to stay over at this house again. Something I never thought could happen."
Sophia continued telling Aurora how hard she had tried to persuade Alex. Still, he was never willing to stay overnight in this house again. No matter the reasons given to convince him, he always chooses to return to his own home, even when it is past midnight.
"That’s why I’m thankful to you, Aurora..." Sophia couldn’t finish her thought because Alex was already there, catching her words and standing close to Aurora.
"Mother, I need to speak with my wife. May I?" Alex extended his hand to guide Aurora away from his mother, concerned that his mother might attempt to intimidate her.
Sophia chuckled softly while trying to tease her son with her smile playfully. Though she didn’t speak, her eyes seemed to say, "Enjoy your moment with your wife, my son..."
...
As his mother finally walked away from them, Alex leaned closer to Aurora.
"Are you alright?" he asked with concern, tilting his head to catch her eye. "Aurora, please don’t dwell on anything my mother said. Consider her words as empty," he pressed on hastily. His hand, once again holding her tiny hand, wrapped around it tightly.
Alex was too scared that his mother would scare Aurora. Moreover, Aurora already knows that his mother hates his assistant, who shares the same name as her.
This is one of his concerns about bringing her here so soon to meet his family, as everyone still remembers Aurora Moon’s tragic death.
Aurora stifled her smile at the worry radiating from his eyes. She knew this man was honestly expressing what was in his heart. This was not mere acting; it came from his heart. He genuinely cared for her.
"Alex, your view of your mother may differ." She grins as she notices him raising an eyebrow.
Aurora continued, "Your mother appears quite kind to me. She expressed her appreciation and gratitude toward me. And she also told me about you..."
Alex’s expression suddenly changed to panic—would his mother reveal how messy his past marriage had been?
He tried to mask his anxiety and spoke softly, "Aurora, I know you’re a kind girl and always respect your elders. But don’t trust anyone too quickly, especially my mother. Please promise me you won’t let your guard down around her."
"Hmm, I will keep that in mind, Alex," Aurora replied earnestly, as she doubted Sophia’s kindness or any shift in her demeanor. She had recognized Sophia’s cunning nature for far too long.
Aurora’s good mood was somewhat uplifted when Alex sincerely cared for her. Still, it gradually faded when she entered the hall where Andrew Graystone’s close family and friends awaited their arrival.
More than twenty people rose from the chairs around the long table in the center of the room, smiling warmly to greet Andrew.
The gentle live music from across the room failed to ease Aurora’s tension. She recognized nearly all the guests in the space designed for a hundred people.
In her previous life, she had consistently come across all of them. As far as she recalls, she had never felt intimidated by any of them, despite the fact that some were important figures in this country.
"Just relax. Smile when someone greets you..." Alex’s gentle voice prompted her to smile momentarily before she settled between Alex and Sophia.
Andrew Graystone’s birthday dinner was consistent with previous years, and she attended annually, serving as Alex’s assistant rather than a guest.
In the past, she stood at the end of the room with the other servers, waiting for their master to eat and interact with the other guests.
What a significant difference!
Today, she can enjoy an exclusive dinner at a table with numerous influential people in this nation.
Still, she did not pay attention to them, even though some pairs of eyes were watching her and whispering to those beside them, clearly talking about her.
Aurora focused on eating her food in peace. She tried not to converse with them, especially Sophia, who always starts conversations with her, even as she kindly placed many kinds of food on her plate, acting like her nanny, Tina.
She felt mixed emotions about receiving such generous treatment from Sophia, unsure whether to be happy or cautious. She couldn’t lie to herself that she was suspicious of Sophia Morrison.
When Aurora had just finished her dinner, a commotion pulled her back from her thoughts, and she saw several pairs of eyes staring at her.
Confused, she turned to see Alex smiling. She only realized that Andrew Graystone had just introduced her as Alex’s wife.
Unsure of her response, she merely smiled politely as they congratulated her and Alex.
However, when her eyes spotted a man she recognized at the end of the table, her nerves heightened.
’David!’ she whispered while trying to hide her body beside Alex. ’Why is he still here?’
