Chapter 91: I Am Sorry!

Isadora seemed genuinely excited when she heard the mention of her brother’s "girlfriend." Her eyes sparkled, but she quickly suppressed her enthusiasm like an obedient child, knowing the conversation was serious. She didn’t want to interrupt.

Igaris clicked his tongue, realizing there was no point in trying to fool a mother’s eyes.

Just like his original mother, Roxanne could read his face like an open book.

"Honestly, I’m surprised by your ability," she said, her voice carrying both wonder and unease. "It’s terrifying, in a way—knowing you can tame even lifeless machines. I don’t know how it works, or how you received it, and I won’t ask. That’s your secret to keep."

She leaned forward slightly, her gaze firm. "All I want... is for you to contact your father. Tell him what’s happened to us. I believe—no, I know—he has the power to get out of that prison alive."

She sounded confident, proud even, in her husband’s strength. But Igaris was still seen hesitating to make a commitment as a son should.

And she noticed it right away.

Her face fell before she asked gently, "You... don’t want to help, my son? Why is that?"

There was a subtle tremble in her voice, as if she was disappointed and saddened. After all the struggle and care poured into raising him, her own son hesitating to help his father was a bitter thing to witness.

Igaris quickly shook his head. "No, Mom. Please don’t misunderstand. Your son is not unfilial. I do want to help... but there’s something I need to tell you first. A secret one that could break your heart."

He paused, clenching his hands on his knees.

"But I have to say it. I need to clear my conscience and let go of this burden."

His eyes met hers, bright and determined

To any other Diver out there, transmigrating into another person’s life might seem like a great opportunity to grow strong. He thought it too. But now... to him, it came with weight. A mental and emotional toll most could never understand.

Some Divers reject the roles and responsibilities left behind by their predecessors. They start anew. But he couldn’t.

No matter how many times he reminded himself otherwise, he couldn’t shake the guilt. In his heart, it felt like he had stolen this life. That his existence came at the cost of another’s.

Even though the truth was that Igor (her real son) had already died when Igaris arrived in this world.

Roxanne felt a sudden, heavy pressure in her chest. A dreadful premonition coiled in her gut, but even then, she said softly, "Go on... explain."

Igaris took her words as the final cue. He inhaled deeply, his throat dry but voice steady.

"I’m not your real son, Mother. My name... is Igaris. Your son, Igor, is dead. I took over his body."

"Thud!"

Roxanne collapsed to her knees, the strength in her legs vanishing as if the sky itself had fallen upon her. Her world cracked open at the seams. It wasn’t just a confession—it was the kind of truth that made the soul scream.

"No... No, this can’t be... You must be lying..."

Her voice quivered, barely above a whisper, but the tears running freely down her cheeks betrayed her thoughts. Deep inside, she had always sensed something was wrong. His mannerisms, his voice, even the subtle change in his eyes, said it all. And yet she had told herself it was just the amnesia. Just trauma.

But it wasn’t.

This wasn’t her Igor.

"Waah—what are you saying, big brother?!"

Isadora’s small voice rang out, choked with panic. Her little hands clutched the fabric of his shirt tightly, her body trembling as though he’d disappear if she let go.

"You’re standing right here! You are my big brother! Why are you saying all this? Is it... is it because I made you angry? Did I do something wrong? Please don’t leave me!"

Her voice broke, her sobs rising in pitch as confusion and fear clashed in her tiny heart.

To her, Igaris was her world, her protector, her anchor. The thought of him not being her brother shattered everything she believed in.

Igaris knelt down, lowering himself to both of them. He placed one hand gently on Isadora’s back and the other on Roxanne’s shoulder.

His heart ached.

"I’m sorry..." he whispered, "I didn’t want to lie to either of you. But I couldn’t keep pretending either."

He looked at Roxanne, his eyes filled with sincerity.

"I may not be Igor... not the boy you gave birth to. But the role I’ve inherited, the feelings I’ve come to have for both of you... they’re real. The grief you carry—I feel it too."

He turned to Isadora, whose eyes were swollen with tears.

"You did nothing wrong, little sister. Never. And to me... you are still my little sister."

He pulled her into a hug, holding her gently but firmly, letting her cry into his chest.

"Everyone I had in my world was killed—father, mother, grandfather, brother. Everyone. For a long time, I was lonely. But I found the same warmth and love between you two. Please forgive me!" he said, kneeling and begging sincerely.

Seeing the sincerity and deep sorrow in his eyes, Roxanne’s heart clenched for some reason. She felt sympathy for the unknown soul that had taken over. Perhaps it was her maternal instinct taking over.

Still, she couldn’t shake the sense of unfamiliarity, no matter how hard she tried. And what about Igor? What had happened to her son?

"Where are you from? Did you kill Igor to get this body?" she asked, her eyes shimmering with palpable anger.

Igaris remained on his knees and answered, "No. I didn’t. But I believe he was already dead before I arrived."

"I see..." Her tone sounded calm, but only she knew how chaotic her emotions truly were.

Her son, her very own son, had died. Any mother would struggle to accept such a truth. Most would unreasonably place the blame on Igaris for simply existing in his place.

But Roxanne, being the calm and rational person she was, chose instead to listen to his story first.

"I come from a realm known as Orca... and I am a World Diver," he began.
