Chapter 137: 137 I won’t do anything stupid (fourth update, soliciting monthly passes)
In the hospital room, Yang Jinxia sat in front of the sickbed, gazing at the elderly person wearing a breathing mask, and asked, “I haven’t visited you for almost half a month, I’m sorry, because I had something very important to do.”
“The doctor mentioned that you’ve been doing well recently.”
Her eyes moved away from the elderly person’s face, she reached for an apple and a fruit knife from the table beside her, and as she peeled the apple, she said, “Do you remember the man from my dream I told you about last time? I found him. He’s very handsome, it’s just a pity that I can’t bring him here for you to meet right now.”
“These past few weeks, I’ve been with him all the time, and I’ve been very happy. You used to forbid me from reading those romantic novels, but I secretly read them anyway. Now I finally understand, there really is the kind of sweet love described in books.”
“The man from my dream is a bit chauvinistic and a bit rough around the edges. After being with him, I realized that he is actually a very considerate person; that coldness and outward rudeness were just his way of protecting himself by putting on an act.”
“He’s also very impressive in that department, every night, we go several times. I feel like I can’t keep up.” She said, her face turning slightly red.
“I really wish I could just be with him all the time. Maybe in a few years, we’ll have a child, yeah, just one, we can’t have more. It would be best if it’s a son, if we have a daughter and she keeps clinging to him, what do we do then? I don’t want to create a love rival for myself.”
As she spoke, her smile grew wider and the last bit of the apple skin was peeled off. She placed the apple on a plate, took out a tissue, and wiped off the juice on the fruit knife, leaving the blade shining brightly.
“But someone objected to me being with him, what should I do?”
Her eyes turned to the heart monitor, and the frequency of the pulses suddenly increased a bit. She had a bizarre smile on her face and said, “You’re afraid that I’ll do something foolish, aren’t you? It makes sense, Jinxiu Investment is your life’s work, for it, you went to all lengths—”
Knock knock.
There was a knocking at the door, and she immediately closed her mouth and put the fruit knife back in its place.
Wen Yan came in through the door, “Mr. Yang, that elderly gentleman has arrived.” As she said this, she stepped aside, and a not very tall old man with a face full of wrinkles and obvious age spots came in. However, his hair, dyed black, didn’t make him look that old. Walking straight to the sickbed, he looked at the elderly woman lying there, his cloudy eyes taking on a complicated expression.
He spoke softly, “She has worked hard all her life, and now she finally has a chance to rest properly.”
Yang Jinxia stood next to him and said, “She herself probably wouldn’t like to just lie here like this.”
The old man turned his head to face her directly for the first time, slowly nodding as he said, “You’ve done very well these past years. You haven’t disappointed her.”
“Thanks to your help all along. Otherwise, how could I, a weak woman, have preserved Jinxiu Investment on my own?”
The old man looked at her and sighed softly, “You’ve had a hard time these past years.”
“It’s my responsibility to bear, Jinxiu is her lifelong dedication, and I won’t let anyone take it away from me no matter what,” Yang Jinxia said firmly while looking at the old lady on the sickbed.
There was a hint of satisfaction in the old man’s eyes. After a moment, he said, “Next year, I’m going to retire. I’ll make some arrangements for you, but you too should make some early preparations.”
“I understand.”
The old man stayed a little longer, then left.
Once the door was closed again, Yang Jinxia’s face broke into a smile and said, “You’ve got a good eye for men. He’s still thinking of the old affection even now when you’re like this. I guess, did you ever tell him that I’m his daughter?”
“How many people have you told this to?”
“Maybe, even you don’t know yourself.”
Ding dong.
Her phone on the table rang once. She glanced at it, it was a message from Chen Xu, saying, “Alright, he’s looking for me, I have to go.”
She picked up her phone and turned to walk away but suddenly stopped and said, “Don’t worry, I’m not stupid. In this cruel world, if I lose wealth and status, I’ll not only harm myself, but I’ll also harm him. As long as I keep control of Jinxiu, I can protect myself, as well as him.”
“I believe, before long, he will have the power to protect me. Want to know why? No, how could I let others know about such matters?”
“The only trouble is, what if some enchanting temptress takes a fancy to him? He’s softhearted and can’t resist the seduction of women/sex. Ah, that’s the common weakness of men.”
“But no matter, when the time comes, let’s all fight it out. Let’s see who will have the last laugh.”
Her voice grew lower and lower, and finally, she left the hospital room.
……
“What’s with you, rubbing your eyes all the time?”
Inside a hotel, Old Tang and Chen Xu were having morning tea, noticing him constantly rub his eyes, therefore asked.
Chen Xu blinked hard and said, “I don’t know why, but my eyelid has been twitching.”
“Could it be that you didn’t sleep well?”
“Maybe.” Chen Xu decided to ignore it. Seeing a trolley loaded with steamers coming their way, he said, “Whatever you want to eat, just take it.”
“I won’t hold back then.”
Old Tang laughed as he said that, knowing Chen Xu had cashed in his grand prize and pocketed fifty thousand yuan. So when Chen Xu invited him to dinner today, he didn’t decline, especially since it was the weekend.
Chen Xu said, “Next time, bring your sister-in-law and my little niece along; I’ll introduce my girlfriend to you.”
Old Tang asked curiously, “You got a girlfriend? When did this happen?”
“During the Spring Festival when I went back to my hometown.”
“Congratulations, congratulations.” Old Tang was genuinely happy for him. After Chen Xu broke up with his last girlfriend two years ago, he had been quite down for a long time. It seemed now that he had finally stepped out of that shadow.
While they were talking, the dim sum cart finally arrived, and the two of them stood up, each picking out four or five baskets of their favorite morning snacks and placing them on the table.
As he ate, Chen Xu asked, “By the way, how’s the company doing lately?”
“Just busy. We’re about to integrate with Fangdong’s online channels, and everyone is swamped. The department also just hired more than a dozen new employees.”
Old Tang added, “Also, Mr. Wu resigned right after the new year. Now, Mr. Liu is acting in charge of the company’s affairs, and the company’s resources are all leaning towards our department, which has greatly improved efficiency.”
Chen Xu was shocked; he hadn’t expected the head office to move so quickly. After all, Mr. Wu was one of the company’s veterans and had his backers in the head office. Yet, he resigned without causing even a ripple.
“Hasn’t the company been through a huge shake-up recently?”
“Not really. Mr. Liu doesn’t have time to deal with those people and is cold-shouldering them for now. The clever ones have already left. The rest are those with nowhere else to go.” Old Tang briefly described the situation at the company.
Chen Xu felt this was very much in line with Liu Kun’s impression on him – very pragmatic.
Old Tang then asked about Chen Xu’s plans, “What about you? What’s next for you? Are you going to keep running that small noodle shop?”
“The lease on that noodle shop is almost up,” Chen Xu shook his head. Just a few days ago, the previous owner of the shop had called to tell him he would be coming over. They had signed a three-month contract, and by Chen Xu’s count, it was almost up.
“I plan to take over a larger storefront. You know a lot of people; help me ask around.” Chen Xu had asked Old Tang out not just to catch up – this was his main purpose.
Hearing this, Old Tang immediately asked, “How much capital do you have now?”
“One hundred thousand yuan. Not a lot of money, so it’s okay if the store is a bit small, or if the location is slightly off. Preferably near a business district,” Chen Xu laid out his requirements.
Old Tang replied, “Okay, I’ll ask some of my friends around to see if there’s anything suitable.”
Chen Xu picked up the teapot and filled both their cups, toasting Old Tang with tea instead of liquor.
After taking a sip, he thought the tea in this restaurant really wasn’t up to par.
These days, Yang Jinxia had been brewing tea for him daily, and it had spoiled his palate.
After finishing their meal, they still had quite a bit left over—mostly buns, custard buns, and barbecue pork buns. Chen Xu asked Old Tang to take them home in a doggy bag.
After leaving the hotel, Old Tang went back home. Chen Xu went to the mall alone to buy some things, and when he returned to Yang Jinxia’s home, she had not yet come back. Checking the time, it was nearly eleven o’clock, so he sent her a text to ask.
Soon there was a reply, saying she was on her way back.
He turned on the phone, sat on the sofa, glanced at it a few times, then flipped through some channels before settling on another. After cycling through a few rounds, he heard some noise at the door and turned the TV off.
“I’m back.”
Yang Jinxia changed into slippers, came in, placed the bags she was carrying on the table, and sat in his lap, asking, “What did you buy for groceries today?”
Chen Xu pecked her smooth forehead, “Why were you out for so long?”
“I stayed to chat with my grandma a bit longer.” She said, opening her hand, “Give me your wallet.”
“Why?” Chen Xu asked, even as he took out his wallet and handed it to her.
She opened the wallet and seeing the photo compartment was empty, she gave him a sideways glance, and asked, “Where’s the photo that was here?”
“What photo?” Chen Xu feigned ignorance.
With a light snort and no more fuss, Yang Jinxia took out a small, transparent zip bag from her pocket, tore it open, and took out a two-inch photo of herself.
She stuffed the photo inside before handing the wallet back to him, “From now on, your wallet may only contain my picture.”
“Alright,” Chen Xu chuckled, opened the wallet to look at the photo – her smile was gentle, the light in her eyes bright, and the angle of the photo was perfect. He said, “You’re so beautiful, if others saw this, they’d think you were a celebrity.”
“Do you think any celebrity is as beautiful as me?” Yang Jinxia countered.
Chen Xu gently pinched her nose and said, “Right, in the whole world, you are the most beautiful.”
