Chapter 136: 136 Check his identity (Third update, requesting monthly ticket)

In the subway, Zhang Xing stood beside the door, leaning against the carriage, with his hand on the handrail at the edge of the seat, his face expressionless, staring at an advertisement across from him.

It was past noon, and he hadn’t eaten yet.

In the morning, he had accidentally left a document at home. It was only when he needed it that he remembered, and he got a reprimand from his boss, who then ordered him to go back and get it immediately.

So, with an empty stomach, he ran back home, got the document and was now on his way to the office.

“I’m so hungry.”

He hadn’t felt it while running on the road, but as soon as he got on the subway, his stomach started to growl.

At that moment, the subway slowed down as it arrived at another station. He glanced subconsciously at the station map beside the advertisement—three more stops to go.

After the subway stopped, some people got off, and others got on. It wasn’t rush hour, so it wasn’t particularly crowded. There were seats available when he boarded, but he preferred to stand rather than squeeze too close to strangers.

Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of a dazzling figure that had just boarded, capturing his attention.

So beautiful.

Even with his usually picky gaze, she had caught his interest instantly. He had encountered pretty girls on the street before, but this one had a very special aura. Her face was expressionless, yet it radiated an unparalleled elegance.

She walked to a handrail opposite him and stood there holding onto it.

While he pretended to look at the advertisement overhead, he occasionally glanced at the figure out of the corner of his eye.

The subway doors closed, and it started moving. The force of inertia made him lean slightly to the right; he gripped the handrail tighter to steady himself.

That’s when he noticed a man approaching her and starting with, “Hello, may I get to know you?”

Zhang Xing felt a twinge of sourness inside—he was actually hitting on her. He had entertained the idea himself, but it was just a thought; this guy had put it into action. And the man wasn’t even handsome. Zhang Xing thought he looked better than him. He wondered where the guy got his confidence from.

Come on, that kind of opener? Surely people from the last century didn’t do that anymore.

He felt a sense of schadenfreude and waited to see the man get rejected.

Indeed, the woman’s expression didn’t change. She didn’t even look at the man and said, “No.”

Then the man seemed unsure of what to say next but unwilling to leave just like that, creating an awkward silence.

Zhang Xing nearly laughed himself silly, thinking this guy was obviously a novice. Starting off with a challenge on hell mode—wasn’t that asking for trouble?

“Why not?” the man finally blurted out.

“Because I don’t want to get to know you.”

“…But I do.”

Zhang Xing almost burst out laughing, thinking to himself what a piece of work this guy was. Surely now the beautiful woman would shoo him away.

To his surprise, she didn’t get angry. Instead, she looked at the man and asked, “Why?”

No way?

A flicker of doubt crossed his mind; this wasn’t going as he had expected.

The man hesitated slightly before saying, “Because you’re beautiful.”

Zhang Xing’s mouth twitched at the candid remark. Brother, wasn’t that a bit too straightforward?

Then he saw a smile appear on the woman’s face as she asked, “What else?”

“You have a nice aura, a good figure.”

“And?”

The man looked at her for a while and said, “Your eyes are especially beautiful, as if they shine. When you look at me, my heart starts racing uncontrollably.”

Zhang Xing felt goosebumps all over. Hitting on someone was one thing, but such cheesy lines? Wasn’t that going overboard? Would any woman like that?

“Really?” Shockingly, the girl, who initially seemed so cool and aloof, seemed somewhat shy.

Zhang Xing was dumbfounded. Wait a minute, girl, where was your pride? Where was your restraint? How could you be charmed by a couple of cheesy lines like that? This guy has the look of a scoundrel; he’s clearly not a good person.

At that moment, the man said, “Give me your hand.”

“What for?” the girl asked, but she extended her hand anyway.

The man took her hand and slipped it inside his coat, over his chest, and said, “Look into my eyes. Can you feel my heartbeat?”

That works?

Zhang Xing’s mouth kept widening in disbelief as he watched the interaction between the man and the woman, feeling as if his worldview was being violently shaken.

Was this really the right way to hit on a beautiful woman?

For the next few minutes, he watched the man and the woman get closer, whispering to each other, then holding hands. After a while, the man had his arm around her waist.

What broke him was witnessing the two of them actually kissing.

Kissing.

Kissed.

Stepping out of the subway, his head was spinning. Staring at the huge advertisement on the wall, a thought suddenly popped into his mind.

Who am I?

Where am I?

What on earth is going on with this world?

Chen Xu and Yang Jinxia had already gotten off the subway at the previous station and were walking toward the exit.

Yang Jinxia asked, “Did you notice the expression of the man sitting opposite us?”

“I wasn’t paying attention,” Chen Xu replied. It was his first time playing such a game of pretending not to know each other, and he felt somewhat embarrassed. He really hadn’t noticed the reactions of those around them.

“I think he actually believed it.” She found it amusing and said, “Do you think he might use your approach to hit on some other girl?”

Chen Xu paused, “Surely not. Could anyone be that foolish?”

“You never know.”

While they talked, the two rode the long, steep escalator out of the subway station and walked towards the nearby shopping mall, laughing and chatting with an intimate demeanor that left no doubt in the minds of passersby that they were a couple.

As they were passing an intersection, waiting for the light to turn green,

a black Mercedes was idling in the middle lane, slightly behind, also waiting for the red light to change.

Sitting in the back seat, a middle-aged man leaned against the right side window, his expression solemn as if deep in thought. Suddenly, his eyes caught a glimpse of a figure and his gaze abruptly fixed.

Huh?

“Mr. Luo?” the driver in front turned his head to ask.

Mr. Luo gestured with his hand that it was nothing, but his eyes never left the figure in the distance.

Then, as the green light came on, the car slowly moved forward, and the figure he was watching walked with the crowd towards the highway.

“Drive slowly, follow the woman in red,” Mr. Luo instructed.

“Yes,” the driver responded, slowing the car down after the traffic light and keeping behind the pair until they entered the mall.

Mr. Luo told the driver, “Go follow them and get a clear picture of their faces. And make sure not to be noticed.”

“Understood.” The driver parked the car at the roadside, took off his tie, and then headed into the mall.

About ten minutes later, the driver returned, handed over his phone, and said, “Mr. Luo.”

Mr. Luo took the phone, looked at the clear frontal shots, and a strange smile formed on his face as he said, “Heh, interesting. So, you’re just an ordinary woman after all…”

He handed the phone back to the driver, instructing, “Find out the identity of this man.”

“Right away, Mr. Luo.”

“Let’s go.”

In the evening, Yang Jinxia, wearing an apron, was chopping meat in the kitchen. Chen Xu had already turned on the gas stove and was heating the wok, hand near the bottom, testing the temperature.

Suddenly, her phone in her pocket rang. There was only a small piece of meat left on the cutting board, which she quickly finished slicing, wiped her hands, and pulled out her phone. It was an unknown number.

“Why aren’t you answering it?” Chen Xu turned to see her holding the phone, neither answering nor hanging up, and asked.

“I don’t recognize the number.” She spoke, but still answered the call.

From the phone, a man’s somewhat hoarse voice said, “Are you busy, sister-in-law?”

Hearing this address, all expression vanished from her face, her eyes grew cold, and as she glanced at Chen Xu pouring oil into the wok, she walked out of the kitchen.

Sizzle…

The noise of the vegetables hitting the hot oil followed her from behind.

“Oh, you’re cooking, did I disturb you?”

Yang Jinxia continued walking onto the balcony and said, “I can’t believe you would call me; I thought it was a scammer.”

“I just wanted to call and congratulate you for finding your happiness.”

Her eyebrows knit slightly – how did he come to know about this?

The voice over the phone continued, “Ah, my poor late brother passed too soon to enjoy such fortune. But the Luo Family is not without sentiment; we’ll wish you well in your new happiness. And when you marry, we’ll send you a generous gift.”

“But, you see, the portion of the Luo Family wealth that you managed in my brother’s stead should rightfully return to its original owners. Don’t you agree?”

Yang Jinxia finally spoke, her tone cool, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Oh, should I confront that Chen Xu fellow instead? After all, he used to work at a company under our group; there’s a bit of a history between us.”

Yang Jinxia, looking outside the balcony, spoke in a gentle voice, “Uncle, I hear you often visit a certain teahouse. Coincidentally, the owner there, I seem to have seen her somewhere before. She looks somewhat like your ex-wife. If it weren’t for the age difference, I might think she was her sister.”

Silence fell on the other end of the line.

“I hear that a certain acquaintance of grandma’s is retiring next year.”

Yang Jinxia said coolly, “You don’t need to worry about these matters.” She then hung up the phone.

“Who was that?” Chen Xu had finished cooking and brought out the food, asking.

With a smile, she answered, “A scammer.”

“Then why bother with him?”

“Just bored, amusing myself a bit.” She walked back inside to help with the serving, adding, “I’m going to see grandma tomorrow morning.”

“Want me to come with you?”

“No need, I’ll be fine on my own.”

“Alright then, just be careful driving.”
