Chapter 33 - 33: I Won’t Go

"My stay abroad? Daniel, I don't want to go! We're supposed to get married. Leaving now will only delay our wedding. I don't want to be apart from you. I want to stay by your side."

Tears welled up in Kate's eyes as she gently tugged on Daniel's sleeve, pleading with him.

"Kate, the wedding's off."

His cold words hit her like a ton of bricks.

She suddenly felt her world was falling apart.

"Why? We've been fine all this time! I've raised Rai like my own for years. Who else can take care of him better than me? Everyone is against me, and now you don't believe me either?"

Kate's voice trembled in panic.

Bringing up Rai only made Daniel angrier.

Like her own, huh?

He didn't believe a single word she said.

"Do you think I would come to you without knowing the truth about the charity dinner?"

"I gave you a chance."

Daniel's face darkened. Without another word, he turned and walked out of the ward.

For seven years, he had kept Kate by his side and trusted her.

He would be lying if he said he wasn't disappointed.

He couldn't stand being deceived!

Yet, Kate still tried to deceive him!

As Daniel walked away, she panicked and tried to run after him.

The bodyguards blocked her path.

"Daniel! Please, just hear me out! I have my reasons!"

"Daniel!"

Her voice grew desperate, and her emotions spiraled out of control.

Ashton blocked her path. "Ms. Bently, I suggest you pack your things and go abroad. At least Mr. Wilson is handling the charity dinner scandal for you. Fighting his decision will only make things worse."

"No. I won't go! I won't give up on Daniel! I won't!"

Soon, Chantelle walked into the elevator and glanced at a message from Kane.

A knowing smile crossed her lips.

Daniel seemed more interested in her than she expected.

She needed to move quickly before her cover was blown. If he uncovered her true identity, it would ruin everything.

Yet, deep down, she couldn't help but feel a little curious.

She wondered how Daniel would react when he discovered she was the Chantelle Bently, who supposedly died five years ago.

Chantelle and Calvin took the elevator down to the basement parking.

After getting into the car, she opened Kane's chat and started typing.

[Chantelle: Got it. Be careful at the Wilsons' residence.]

[Kane: Relax, Mom. That two-timer dad stopped Grandma from coming to the house. She won't be able to hurt me anymore.]

[Chantelle: Did someone try to hurt you? Are you okay? Who is this Grandma you're talking about?]

Chantelle's hands clenched as worry filled her head. She wanted to call him right away, but doing so could expose him and put him in danger.

On the other end, Kane stared at his mom's message, feeling embarrassed.

Damn! I let that slip.

[Kane: Don't worry, Mom. I'm fine. Kate's mother appeared out of nowhere and scared me, but my two-timer dad threw her out...]

Chantelle froze as her eyes glued on the screen.

"Kate's mother."

Her mind went blank for a moment.

This was the same woman she once called Mom.

No matter how hard she tried, she could never earn the woman's favor the way Kate did.

It was as if Chantelle was never her daughter.

And now, that same woman had gone to the Wilsons' residence—to hurt her child?

That was her grandson. How could she be so heartless?

Kane brushed it off like it was nothing, but Chantelle knew her son better than anyone.

It took a lot of effort to scare her little troublemaker.

Maybe Kate's mother was willing to do anything to clear the path for Kate.

Chantelle's grip tightened around her phone as her breathing grew heavy.

"Are you alright, Ms. Bently?"

Calvin's voice pulled her out of her thoughts. He had noticed something was off.

She slowly loosened her hold on the phone.

"I'm fine. You should head back. I need to make a quick stop."

"Ms. Bently, you don't look well. Let me go with you."

"It's fine. Send Roman the evidence of Kate's embezzlement. Considering the billion-dollar deal that was compromised, that should be enough to trigger his anger."

"Understood, Ms. Bently."

Late at night, Roman finally realized the mess surrounding the company's project.

"Six hundred million dollars! Where did all that money go?"

Furious, he slammed his hand on the table.

The seed money for the Shallow Bay project had vanished without a trace!

Ruby wiped her sweaty palms on her lap, careful not to draw attention.

She said softly, "Did James Lowe run off with the money? Don't worry too much. We still have Mr. Wilson. Kate can ask him to help us."

Roman ignored her suggestion and let out a cold scoff.

"I know, James. He's too much of a coward to steal that kind of money."

His eyes darkened.

"I have a question. What's going on with Kate's wedding dress?"

Doubt was starting to creep in.

Ruby's back stiffened, and her eyes darted around nervously. She quickly tried to regain her composure.

"I'm not sure. Maybe Mr. Wilson gave it to her since they're about to get married."

Roman's frown deepened. The wrinkles on his forehead became more profound.

"Kate's reputation took a hit after the charity dinner scandal. I doubt she's still able to marry into the Wilson family."

His sharp eyes stared into Ruby.

"Are you hiding something from me?"

He knew his wife too well to miss her odd behavior.

"I remember you asked me to give Kate four hundred million dollars."

Roman's words struck a nerve. Ruby's eyes widened as she quickly denied it.

"No way! We don't have the power to do that. How could it be us?"

Tears welled up in her eyes.

"I know this is serious, but that doesn't mean you should blame us."

Feeling restless, Roman rubbed his temples instead of comforting her like usual.

Just then, the butler walked in and handed over a small case.

"Sir, a man dropped this off for you. He said it contains important information about the Shallow Bay project."

Roman frowned and reached for the case.
