Legendary FBI Detective-Chapter 388: The Killer’s Target, the Victim’s Wife, the Suspect
"Taylor Davis has only been a judge in Los Angeles City for six months. A new judge, he hasn't handled many cases."
Mona pulled up the cases Taylor Davis had worked on after becoming a judge, and there were all kinds of cases included.
After glancing through them briefly, Luo An could tell that Taylor Davis had a decent legal foundation; based solely on the case files, the decisions Taylor Davis made were mostly in line with federal law.
However, Luo An was merely a bystander; he didn't know the intricacies of those cases. He was aware that among them, there must be some firsthand experiences of dissatisfaction with the judge's rulings.
Luo An pondered for a moment, then walked to the front of the office area and began writing and sketching on a whiteboard, saying as he wrote:
"According to Samia's description, the moment Taylor Davis was shot, she was dumbfounded in bed for quite a while; it took her five or six seconds before she screamed, ran off the bed, and hid on the ground.
That amount of time would have been enough for the sniper to shoot Samia as well, but the sniper didn't do that, instead quickly collecting the casings and leaving the scene.
The killer's target was very clear, it was Taylor Davis himself.
The reasons for not killing Samia could be either a hasty retreat or simply seeing no need to kill her, deeming it unnecessary trouble."
Reesi thought for a moment and added:
"Another possibility could be that the sniper spared Samia out of compassion, not wanting to kill her."
"…That's possible, but unlikely."
Luo An nodded, looking at Mona and Michelle, and added:
"The killer has high sniping skills, must be a professional assassin or a military veteran; they definitely have experience in this field.
Mona, Michelle, you two start reviewing the cases that Taylor Davis worked on before his death, see if there are any parties involved, or their friends and relatives, who match the profile I've described."
"OK."
"No problem."
Mona and Michelle immediately agreed and began working. At that moment, a desk phone rang. Reesi answered and spoke a few words before turning to Luo An:
"Taylor Davis's wife is downstairs."
"OK, trouble you to bring her up, please."
Luo An stood up and went to the meeting room to wait. Five minutes later, Lady Heather—dressed in a women's suit, with gold-rimmed glasses, and a curvaceous figure that exuded the charm of a mature woman—walked into the Special Investigation Team office looking travel-weary.
Not to Luo An's surprise, besides the fatigue from her journey, Lady Heather's face did not show the heartache and sorrow one might expect to see on a wife who has just learned of her husband's death.
Lady Heather was very composed; after hearing that Taylor Davis had died in bed, she didn't get angry but fell silent for a few seconds, then took out a slim cigarette from her handbag, looked at Luo An, and asked:
"May I?"
"Please do."
Luo An gestured that it was fine, while Reesi took out a notebook and started to write and sketch.
Once she had finished smoking the entire cigarette, Lady Heather picked up the coffee from the meeting table and drank it down in one gulp, leaned back, and crossed her legs, speaking with a rather cold tone:
"There are many people who die from shootings every year in the federation, but very few from sniper bullets. I had never thought Taylor would become one of them."
"Life always has unexpected events."
Seeing that Lady Heather was quite stable emotionally, Luo An didn't waste words and directly asked:
"Has Taylor Davis received any threats recently?"
"I don't know. I haven't received any threats here."
While speaking, Lady Heather took out a key from her handbag and placed it on the conference table, then slightly pushed it towards Luo An:
"This is the key to our house, Taylor's computer and personal items are in the study, with a small amount in the bedroom, you can take them all for investigating."
Pressing down on the key sliding across the conference table, Luo An raised an eyebrow and said:
"In most federal cases where one spouse dies, the other often garners some suspicion.
I wonder, Lady Heather, what you make of that statement?"
Heather looked at Luo An with interest upon hearing this, and after taking out a ladies' cigarette from her purse and taking a drag, she answered:
"Obviously, I'm that small part you're talking about. I knew about Taylor's affairs with other women; we had already discussed this before getting married.
I couldn't satisfy his needs, and he couldn't satisfy mine; rather than arguing and tormenting each other after marriage, it was better to set terms beforehand and let each other free.
My relationship with Taylor was very good; we were able to help each other in work and social relations. He needed me, and I needed him; marriage was just a way to strengthen our connection."
Luo An's eyes twitched; he truly hadn't expected 'very good' to appear as a descriptor for a marital relationship.
Luo An and Reesi continued to ask questions, and Heather answered all of them straightforwardly and with a good attitude. She was the most cooperative person Luo An had encountered in such a long time.
A few minutes later, Heather asked:
"Any more questions? If not, may I leave?
I need to check on my son at school first, then I have a business trip out of state to attend to, some work is still unresolved."
"...No more questions, you may go. But please keep your phone available."
"OK."
Having received Luo An's affirmative response, Heather stood up from her chair, grabbed her purse, and walked out of the Special Investigation Team. In the corridor, she made a phone call, with the topic of conversation clearly related to her work.
Watching Lady Heather's brisk departure, Reesi was left speechless, Luo An thought for a moment, then turned to Mona and asked:
"By the way, between Heather and Taylor, did either of them purchase one of those high-payout personal accident insurance policies for the other?"
"No."
Mona shook her head, indicating that she had already checked and there was no such insurance policy on either of them. However, their son had an accidental injury policy worth 1 million, with both parents as beneficiaries.
"That gave me a scare."
Hearing Mona's description, Luo An maintained a poker face, while Reesi breathed a sigh of relief.
If the insurance payout on their son exceeded three million dollars, Reesi would have to suspect that the underlying reason behind this case was Heather hiring an assassin to kill Taylor, to prevent him from getting the money or stopping her from killing their son, then killing the son to claim the insurance money.
Luo An gave Reesi a strange look upon hearing this, and Reesi raised an eyebrow in response:
"What's wrong? Lady Heather is clearly a person who favors rationality over emotions. If she encountered an unsolvable problem, it wouldn't surprise me at all if she did something like this."
"Perhaps."
Luo An didn't argue with Reesi on this matter. His judgment of Lady Heather was similar; she was extremely rational, direct, decisive, very self-oriented, indifferent to others' opinions, possessing her own values, and holding them without doubt.
Luo An tossed the key Heather had given him to Reesi, signaling her to take several investigators from the Trace Evidence Team to Heather and Taylor's house to retrieve Taylor-Davis's computer and other useful items.
Reesi turned and left, Luo An walked over to where Mona and Michelle were discussing, and asked:
"How is it going? Found anything?"
Mona nodded and brought up a close-up photo and identity information of a middle-aged Caucasian male on the computer screen:
"Following your instructions, I found a suspect, and coincidentally, he happens to own a gun shop."
Luo An bent over to look at the name of the suspect Mona was referring to, as well as the case involving Taylor-Davis that was related to him:
Obaid, the kidnapping case of his daughter.
