Chapter 77: Tea with a princess special...[1]
When she finally came down the stairs, Mei Mei was as grumpy as an old man woken up from his afternoon map. The way she was swinging her bag, everyone in the house was on guard and quick to dodge.
"You have been gone for thirty minutes and already you look like you are ready to execute someone." Feng Qi commented on Mei Mei’s mood. "And why is there a bandaid on your nose?"
Mei Mei touched the bandaid and ripped it off. "It’s that stupid smart makeup mirror. It called my nose to wide and then recommended plastic surgeons. I know I should not allow it influence me in anyway but it took a huge bite out of my confidence. Now, I keep touching my nostrils, wondering if I should shave off a few inches."
"Wasn’t that mirror banned?" Feng Qi grimaced. She too had fallen victim to it more than a few times.
"Ha!" Mei Mei exploded into a skeptical dry laugh. "The company which manufactures it is owned by an American mogul. I don’t think they will stop manufacturing just because people don’t like what the mirror does to self esteem."
She gestured for the the children to stand up so that they could leave. "Jingzhe we are leaving now." she bellowed.
"Shh...." Feng Qi shushed Mei Mei. "A Tea with a princess special episode is starting and I don’t want to miss the littlest bit. They promised us special guests, juicy gossip and inside scoop on the biggest scandal rocking the empire right now. The only scandal I can think about is yours."
Mei Mei sat down in the sofa and she decided to watch as well. Jingzhe was taking his time coming down the stairs anyway so there was no harm in watching the show for a few minutes.
The theme song was the first to play, it was a catchy song which involved some clapping and dancing. Children all around the empire loved it, Mingzhu and Lian were not the exception.
Rize appeared as the theme song came to an end. She was dressed simply in jeans, a white shirt and a blue astronaut jacket.
"Oh-Oh!" Mei Mei said. "This is definitely about my scandal."
Feng Qi was giggling her toes were even dancing. The children had no idea why grandma Feng was so happy. They also had minimum interest in the show after the theme song ended and they decided to play with their new toys.
On Tv meanwhile, Rize was already calming down the excited live audience of two hundred fifty guests.
"Welcome to the show everyone."
As people cheered she went through the ritual of preparing the tea elegantly. As it simmered, she looked back at the audience.
"Today we will be having a special blend of Juan’s sweet dark berry tea which is not yet on the market. You will all be the first people in the world to taste it before it hits the market."
Again, the audience cheered, it was how talk shows worked. The cheering and applauding were non-stop from beginning to the end.
"Today’s special episode promised you tea and tea you will have." Rize’s head almost bounced from all the shaking she was doing. "Are you excited?"
"Yes your highness." The audience responded together.
It was not just the audience in the studio but those at home as well. Over the years, the show had coined specific responses to specific questions. It had its own catchphrases too. It went out of its way to make the people feel involved and attached to the show.
Rize made herself comfortable and settled in. Everyone held their breath, they knew that real tea was about to begin. "So," Rize waved her hand like she was about to share some unknown gossip, "everyone here knows that my niece Jun Meilin is getting a divorce from her husband Mo Liang."
The audience buzzed with excitement. Those that were watching at home or in their offices started calling and texting others, telling them to switch to Phoenix Tv because they were finally getting the tea on the divorce which was shaking the empire.
"I don’t even have to cover the fact that he was busy in space, exploring all the wrong places." Rize and the audience laughed. "You all know this, the peepstar covered it. Today we are diving deeper into the mistress Tang Yue and her marriage to Caleb Xu. In that spirit, lets welcome Mr. and Mrs. Xu, who are here to disclose the dark insides of their son’s marriage which ended in their daughter-in-law breaking their hearts by having an affair with a man they used to consider half a son."
Rize was great at sensationalizing things on her show. She had deleted the words best friend and turned the relationship between Mo Liang and Caleb Xu.
The Xu couple walked onto the stage amidst an applause. Mrs. Xu was carrying an envelope, a photo album and some other documents. They shook hands with Rize and she poured tea for them in their cups.
Then she sat down again and the audience relaxed.
"Oooh, this is going to be awesome. She came armed with evidence." Feng Qi commented.
"I wonder what she brought." Mei Mei said curiously. "I know that legal document Tang Yue forced Caleb Xu to sign is included."
The chef brought popcorn and other snacks for them.
"Mei Mei, lets go." Jingzhe entered the living room.
Mei Mei looked at her hand that was about to grab a large handful of nutty delight popcorn and she blinked. She looked at the Tv and then the popcorn. It was her favorite kind. Popcorn with a filling of crushed hazelnuts and sprinkling of chocolate with a satisfying crunch.
"But..." she whined.
Jingzhe carried the children and gestured at her to start walking with his head. Mei Mei pouted and tried to feign sadness. It seemed like a good Saturday to stay in, eat popcorn, chips and other snacks while enjoying some scandal.
Jingzhe used his head again to gesture that she start moving. Mei Mei’s shoulders fell forward, she stood up with a sigh and sad face.
"Pack the popcorn for her." Feng Qi told the chef. Her eager eyes returned to the television. She did not even bid them farewell as they left because Mrs. Xu was already unveiling her evidence.
The first, being a picture of Caleb Xu, Tang Yue and Mo Liang as children. As it turned out, they had known each other since the age of six. The three did not just know each other, they lived in the same apartment building and went to the same school.
"Wow, does this mean they were childhood sweethearts?" Feng Qi gasped.
