Chapter 24: A call, six years in the making.
After a long day and a very satisfying dinner, Mei-Mei was about to head to bed when she was informed that she had guests outside her gate. The guests were none other than her husband, his mistress, bastard son and mother.
The villa had three floors and she was on the third one, in her bedroom. Before getting out to deal with them, she sent out one of the spider cameras that the system had given her to scout around. Mo Liang had not come alone, royal agents had accompanied him and press.
"Royal agents!" she scoffed.
Immediately, she got her phone out to call the one responsible for the presence of the royal agents outside her home. Coincidentally, as she was about to call, the emperor himself called her.
It was not surprising that she had his personal phone number, Long Junjie was her close friend. She had grown up calling him brother, when she left the Jun family, they kept in touch for about a year and then she cut him off because Mo Liang wanted to use that relationship
"Junjie." she said in a stiff voice when she answered the video hologram call which allowed her to see him almost in person after six years. He was only thirty thirty five but he looked almost forty. No amount of cosmetic treatments could take away the physical stress which came with the job he had been given so early in his life.
The former emperor had retired early and decided to go hiking around the world with his wife. When it seemed as if he would settle down, he left for the international space station with about fifty percent of the royal family.
They wanted to secure their home on the new planet quickly whenever building started and immigration was made possible. Like other royals, they were afraid that some wealthy individuals could take advantage of the gap and establish themselves as new rulers.
Long Junjie had become the emperor at twenty one, and he was officially the youngest emperor of their nation in history___well, the youngest emperor with the name Long.
"You look better than I imagined, the pictures made it look like you were close to death." He chuckled. "How have you been? It feels like I have not seen or spoken to you in years."
"That’s because it has actually been years since you last talked or saw me in person." She reminded him. "You have aged Junjie."
Long Junjie run a hand through his hair and winced. "Being an emperor will do that to you."
In the background, Mei-Mei heard the sound of paper shuffling and phones that kept ringing non-stop.
Diving in straight to what she wanted to discuss, Mei-Mei wiped the smile from the space. "Let’s put the pleasantries aside for a minute and talk about serious business. What the hell are your royal agents doing outside my house?"
Junjie clenched his hands and twisted his face almost as if he was constipated and gas had just rippled trough his stomach painfully. "They are protecting an asset to the nation."
Mei-Mei snorted and laughed mockingly, "I think you need to go and read your books again. Did your royal tutors skip a few days when you were learning? Junjie, an asset is something valuable."
"I know what an asset is." Junjie increased the volume of his voice and sternness. "An asset generates income and provides benefit. A famous space pilot, the face of our space exploration team is an asset. I know you are going to hate it but I am going to say it anyway, the illegitimate product of his affair the national baby is an asset right now. Every other nation’s space team has returned but everyone around the world is talking about ours. We have an opportunity to be the world leading nation on all things space. Is there any way you can make things easy for him for a few months?"
Mei-Mei laughed again, and the sound was derisive this time round which annoyed Junjie. He always hated it when she laughed at him with mockery in her voice as if he was stupid.
"You married Mo Liang, who is the stupid one of us both?" he blurted out. He winced and cursed silently because he was losing his royal composure.
"It seems like you are still sour about the fact that I rejected your proposal Junjie." She said.
Long Junjie groaned. "We were kids, it was a joke."
"Nineteen is not a kid Junjie." She replied with a smirk on her lips.
Junjie paused the call and took a deep breath. His secretary handed him a glass of water and a mint candy. He put the candy in his mouth, closed his eyes and rested his head against his throne.
"I told you to give up Mo Liang." The secretary said. Her voice had that ’I told you so’ unsaid quality to it.
Junjie hated it when she used that tone on him, it was if his aunt Rize was right there in his ear laughing at him.
He resumed the call, "What do I have to do in order for you to put national interests before your anger over his betrayal?" His voice was calmer and he was composed. "I hate what he did to you and if you recall, I spent a year telling you to divorce him starting from the day you got married. Even after you gave birth, I urged you to leave him, heck, he did not even show up for the birth of his own child. You said you did not want your child to have an incomplete family so you stayed." freeweɓnøvel.com
"And you asked me to marry you again and said you would make my daughter a princess." Mei-Mei laughed once again. "Mind you, you were married yourself at the time so...."
"We were kids," Junjie blurted out loudly. "I was just trying to save you, its not as if I was in love with you." he muttered. "Anyway, I offered a helping hand back then and you rejected it. Now, I am requesting, no begging....."
"How long did you know?" Mei-Mei jumped in with a question about something she was curious about. "You are the emperor, I am certain that you were receiving updates from the international space station daily. It is impossible that in all those updates, you were not informed about the affair or the fact that the child was named Mo."
Junjie took a deep breath and he lowered his head. He could not even look Mei-Mei in the eye. She could always tell when he was lying to her, it was why he had never won a single card game against her when they were growing up.
Mei-Mei scoffed. "My friend and brother, I can see how much you value me, you did not even give me a heads up. Fuck you Junjie." She ripped the phone away from her ear and ended the call.
