Chapter 100: Dad of the year.

Twenty minutes later, there was knocking on her door. Mei Mei brushed away the tears and controlled her emotions, she jumped from the bed and opened the door. She was expecting to see Mingzhu, instead she saw Jingzhe.

He took one look at her red rimmed eyes and he panicked. "Sister, you cried. Why? Is it that jerk, did he call you and say something? Is it the people online, are they bullying you?" He was already plotting vengeance, a storm, hail stones, death, whoever had made her cry was going to pay the price.

She did not know how to stop him from panicking so she simply wrapped her arms around him, patting his back awkwardly.

The situation was quite funny to Jingzhe, she was the one that was crying and yet he was the one being comforted. He was even confused further when she started sobbing quietly.

The sobbing soon produced hiccups and Jingzhe just continued patting her back until she stopped crying another twenty minutes later. By the time she calmed down, his shirt was soaked and he was still just as confused as he had been at the beginning about the cause of her tears.

"Have you finished crying?" he asked her.

She nodded, avoiding looking at him because she was feeling very embarrassed. She had just hugged him and sobbed like a hungry baby. Where was all her dignity?

"A Zhe..." she whispered a laugh. "Can we not tell anyone about this?"

"About what?"

"That I cried. Keep it a secret for me, especially from Mingzhu. If she finds out, she will become worried and I don’t want to burden her with my emotional baggage."

Jingzhe listened to her reasoning and he nodded. In what she said, all he heard was she couldn’t burden others but he was different, she could bring her emotional baggage to him. Wasn’t it a sign that she trusted him more than others?

His shoulders started to dance and he commanded them to stop. Mei Mei had just cried, it was not the time to be happy for any reason.

"I will fetch a towel and wipe your face." he said.

She backed out of the hug, and took a few deep breaths while waiting for him. When he returned with a warm face towel, she jutted her chin upwards and he wiped her face. After, he followed her to the kitchen to keep her company while she prepared Mingzhu’s bento box.

When they entered the kitchen, the lights came on, which displeased a certain bat that was hanging upside down on one of the three bronze crystal chandeliers in the room.

Mei Mei ducked down, screaming at the top of her voice.

"Meow Meow!!" Jingzhe exclaimed.

"You know her!" Mei Mei exclaimed. She was surprised because it was her mother’s bat or her dad’s...or the Jun family bat. It had been brought home five years ago. Mei Mei had never seen the bat in person so she did not recognize the bat at first sight. "Wait this is Meow Meow!"

The bat opened its wings, exposing its belly and squeaking.

"What the hell is it doing here?" She asked, standing up and hoping that her legs which were shaking would support her or else she would end up in Jingzhe’s arms again.

Jingzhe shook his head. "I don’t know. Anyway, she is part of the family so she can hang around." He smiled, the smile was a wide grin that was followed by a chuckle. His eyes were sparkling and seemed to be saying, "Do you see what I did? I made a clever joke!"

"Ha-ha...hang around, I get it." Mei Mei rolled her eyes at him. She was smiling too, her smile was the "I am suffering internally because I have to laugh at a bad joke smile."

She looked up and stared at the bat, mild confusion was still jumbling around within her. Had Rose brought Meow Meow over? Had it flown over on its own? Would it be living here from now on? Did her mother know that it was missing?

"Your parents won’t file a missing report, will they?" he asked, unsure.

"For a bat!" she laughed.

"A bat worth a lot of money." Jingzhe reminded her.

She continued to laugh. "I know but I still find it funny. If the police actually dares to search for it I am sure that half of the citizens will be entertained and the other half will not find it funny because there are real missing humans out there. "Let’s cook."

She prepared a sandwich that was cut into a cat with very sharp ears, apple slices, cherry tomatoes and a fruit and nut bar. There was still space so Jingzhe added his creation, what had remained of the cotton candy small cheesecake pieces now shaped like a koi fish but with the colors of a bee and wings.

"This might be the most bizarre looking fish I have ever seen and yet it is cute." Mei Mei poked the wings. "How did you do this so quickly?"

"I can do it in my sleep." he answered with pride.

Baking cakes was how his mother had earned money to take care of them. He had joined her in the kitchen as soon as he could walk and understand. He could bake a perfect cake with his eyes closed.

She tapped his arm, looking at him with sorry eyes. "I should offer you my condolences in advance. You have no idea what you are about to start. Mingzhu will be expecting animal themed small cakes or snacks in her lunch box from now on.

When she has made enough friends, they will come over and bat their eyes cutely and call you uncle hoping to go home after a play date with cute snacks." She pointed to herself and shook her head. "I am not the woman for the job, you are on your own."

Jingzhe closed the bento box and retrieved three child sized bottles from a kitchen cabinet. He put them down and hugged her from behind, out the blue. He followed up the hug by whispering, "I am your man." Mei pushed him away and he laughed. "I mean your man for the job. I do not mind doing these things for Mingzhu, your nieces and nephews and Mingzhu’s friends. That baby calls me dad and I am her dad so I must fulfill my responsibilities."

As he talked, he embarked on the difficult duty of deciding which fruits he wanted to pick from the fridge. "I am making fresh juice for the girls which one do you think will make me dad of the year. Mango, pineapple, grape or lemon?" he asked, frowning as his eyes roamed over the rest of the fruits.

"Do, apple carrot juice. Why do I see three bottles?" She responded curiously. "I am pretty sure I do not drink from baby bottles."

"It’s for our nephew. We should probably prepare a bento box for Jang Ming too since the children go to the same school." Jingzhe suggested. "Although that brat has a big ego, he might reject it."

They continued to chat, laughing about random things. When it was coming to five, they were done and they decided to go for a run.

As soon as they left the house, Chi Lian jumped down from the refrigerator. She stole the two extra sandwiches which Mei Mei had prepared and left the house through the kitchen window, forgetting to take Meow Meow with her.
