Chapter 164: Chaos at the Guild ( 164 )
"Um—okay..." Ellyna hesitated, then nodded. "The Absolute Eye shows you mean no harm."
The spirit girl’s eyes widened. "Thank you."
She gently reached out and touched the necklace.
At that moment, a warm glow pulsed from the pendant.
A memory—fuzzy but clear—flashed into her mind.
A man with a gentle smile and sharp eyes stood under the setting sun, placing the necklace into her hands. His presence radiated kindness and strength.
Her lips curled into a trembling smile.
"Thank you, kind girl."
"Y-Yeah, no problem..." Ellyna replied, a little flustered.
Then she extended her hand.
"Here. A handshake?"
The spirit hesitated, surprised.
Slowly, she reached out her translucent hand and touched Ellyna’s fingertips.
Another flicker of memory stirred.
"So... a man gave you this necklace?" the spirit girl asked softly.
"Yes~" Ellyna nodded with a small grin.
The spirit tilted her head, her voice light and nostalgic.
"Pinky promise couple, huh?"
"Yes!!" Ellyna giggled, pressing a finger to her lips.
"Tehe~"
The spirit smiled—a peaceful, pure smile.
"Good for you."
"Thanks." Ellyna said gently.
Suddenly—the necklace glowed again.
A soft wind swirled around them, even though no windows were open.
The spirit girl’s eyes widened in surprise as her form shimmered.
"Huh...?" she whispered, looking down at herself.
Before Ellyna could speak, the spirit was slowly drawn into the necklace, like mist into a bottle.
No fear. No resistance.
Just a serene expression, as if she finally found rest.
The glow faded.
And silence fell.
"I wonder who that man was... the one she waited so long to see," Ellyna murmured, holding the necklace gently.
Her gaze drifted to the open window, where the wind carried the scent of the evening sky.
"If only I could help her find him..."
She leaned slightly out, watching clouds drift lazily across the horizon.
"I wonder what Uncle is doing right now..." she whispered softly, smiling faintly.
"And I hope Ridan’s looking after him."
Suddenly—
"Did you say... Ridan?"
Ellyna froze.
"...Huh?" Her ears twitched. "Who was that?"
A voice again, soft but clear.
"You said Ridan... didn’t you?"
"Err... who?" Ellyna spun around, scanning the empty room.
Her hand instinctively went to her blade, but she didn’t draw it.
Silence.
She narrowed her eyes and stepped cautiously across the floor.
"Show yourself!"
But the room stayed still. Only the wind outside answered her.
The pendant started to glow softly.
Then, a voice came—more clear, more desperate.
"Tell me... you said Ridan!?"
Ellyna’s eyes widened.
"Er... yes?"
"Where is he!!?" the voice cried, trembling with raw emotion—hope mixed with pain.
Ellyna hesitated.
"You mean... the cloudy spirit that follows Uncle Hazuki?"
There was a pause.
"Ridan... was with him!?"
The voice cracked, filled with disbelief, but also hope—so much hope it hurt.
"Yes," Ellyna whispered. "He’s been with him the whole time. Why? Who exactly are you to Ridan?"
The pendant pulsed faintly, glowing like a heartbeat—gentle, hopeful.
"He’s the man I’ve been looking for!!"
The spirit’s voice trembled with joy, like a dam finally breaking after centuries.
"Huh? Seriously!?" Ellyna blinked, her grip tightening on the necklace.
The spirit inside cried overwhelmed tears.
"After so long... finally, I found him... Please, tell me where he is!!"
"Err... I don’t really know the exact place right now," Ellyna replied awkwardly. "Uncle is on a journey with Ridan. He said Hazuki couldn’t stay long in the capital, so... Ridan promised he’ll bring him back in one piece after two years."
There was a long silence. freēnovelkiss.com
Then, a soft, relieved laugh echoed from the pendant.
"For real?" Her voice felt lighter, almost childlike.
"Yes," Ellyna nodded. "For real."
"Ahhh... I couldn’t wait... but... two years... another two years..."
The pendant glowed softly again, a warm feeling spreading through Ellyna’s chest.
"Catgirl?" the voice said gently.
Ellyna blinked.
"Err... can you call me Ellyna? Or Ellyn?"
A light giggle echoed.
"Ellyna it is... You can call me Syaria."
Ellyna smiled faintly.
"Oh... nice to meet you."
"Thank you, Ellyna." Syaria’s tone was soft and sincere.
Ellyna rubbed the back of her head awkwardly.
"Err... you’re welcome?"
Back in Macia Town—at the Adventurer Guild.
The atmosphere was tense—really, more awkward than anything.
"DAMN IT, IDIOT SPIRIT!! YOU TOLD ME TO CUT THE LEFT EAR!!" Hazuki yelled, veins bulging on his forehead.
"HUH!? I DIDN’T KNOW YOU WERE THAT STUPID TO ACTUALLY FOLLOW MY ADVICE!!" Ridan snapped back, floating lazily just out of Hazuki’s reach.
"IDIOT SPIRIT!!"
"DUMBASS!!"
The poor receptionist girl—a nervous beastkin with twitching ears—watched blankly, unsure whether to call security or an exorcist. The man was yelling at thin air. Again.
"U-um... mister human?" she tried softly.
"AND YOU EVEN LAUGHED WHEN I CAME BACK FROM THAT SWAMP, YOU DEAD FEATHER DUSTER!!"
"IT WAS FUNNY!! YOU SLIPPED ON MUD AND LANDED FACE-FIRST."
The receptionist shrank back. Luckily, someone else came to her rescue.
"What’s going on here?" said a firm voice.
It was the Deputy Guild Master—a dwarf with sharp eyes.
The receptionist leaned in and whispered, "Umm... the goblin extermination quest required proof using the right ears. But this human brought the left ones. A LOT of them. And... he keeps shouting at nothing."
The dwarf rubbed his temple.
"...How many?"
She hesitated.
"Thousands."
He stared in shock.
"...Thousands!?!?"
The entire guild hall suddenly went silent.
Adventurers paused mid-drink.
Cards dropped.
A spoon clanged into a bowl.
Even Ridan stopped floating.
Hazuki blinked.
"Wait. You’re telling me... we killed thousands of goblins... for nothing!?"
Ridan floated away quietly.
"Oops."
"Who is this human adventurer, anyway?" the Deputy Guild Master muttered, crossing his arms as Hazuki kept yelling at the empty air behind him.
The receptionist nervously adjusted her papers.
"Um... according to his adventurer card... his name is Hazuki. Twenty-four years old. A newbie. Last recorded level is... forty-one."
The dwarf nearly choked on his own spit.
"Level 41!?"
"Yes, Deputy Guild Master..." she said, eyes still on the card. "No party, no mentor. Solo adventurer."
The room erupted in hushed muttering.
"No way!"
"He’s that strong!?"
"With that dumb look on his face!?"
"But he’s got no armor..."
"And that green sword—what even is that?"
Meanwhile, Hazuki was still in his own world—furiously throwing insults into the air.
"I SHOULD HAVE NEVER BELIEVED YOU!!" Hazuki yelled, punching upward as if boxing the ceiling.
"Ahahah! IDIOT!!" Ridan laughed from above, sticking his tongue out like a smug gremlin.
The receptionist flinched.
"Umm... please calm down, Mister Human..."
Hazuki turned sharply, bloodshot eyes locking on her.
"HAAA!? CALM!? CALM WHAT!? THIS IS CALAMITY!!"
"I DESTROYED A WHOLE GOBLIN SETTLEMENT! I BURNT THEIR BASE! I SPARED NO ONE! NOT A SINGLE GOBLIN!! AND NOW I GET NOTHING!!!"
"You destroyed it with my help!! My magic!!" Ridan puffed out his translucent chest proudly. "Without me, you’d still be in that mud pit wrestling goblin babies. This job would’ve taken weeks. That’s if you survived! Bwahahaha!!"
Hazuki raised his fist again but paused, noticing everyone in the guild staring at him.
