Chapter 91: New Friends

Arc 2, Chapter 91 — New Friends

.

.

Sound.

It was a fascinating thing.

In one of the opulent pathways within the Order, the unhurried movements of a few now cloaked the air with its presence.

It was just a hallway yet the grandeur of the place was undeniable, with its high ceilings and intricately carved moldings that spoke of a long history of power and prestige.

There was so much history riddled in these walls, histories that a majority will never come to know. But no matter the case, one thing was clear—both groups coming from opposite directions, seemed untouchable and steady.

Their footsteps frailty echoed around the deserted pathway. Yet if anyone stepped in now, they would feel an immense sensation, like the booming heartbeat of a condemned prisoner.

Din-Din-Din-Din~

Except for the sounds of approaching men, there was nothing but silence that only acted as a catalyst to fuel the tension in the air.

Gaara strode confidently down the corridor, his boots echoing off the marble floors.

His presence commanded respect, a testament to a Department Head. But who else was by his side?

Medoku was right there, his raven-dark hair always looking as though it was dipped in water. They had just returned from their mission to hunt specific Vampires at the Cathedral.

Both turned a hallway corner where they came face to face with someone Gaara was in no mood to see.

"Would you look at what the Cat drove in."

Coming to a halt, both sides browsed at each other calmly... albeit a particular person was not so happy.

"Roud," Gaara gritted, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "What a surprise to see you here... seeing as I was about to storm that Bloody Department of yours for answers!"

Oh?

Roud chuckled softly, no sign of anger on his face. Beside him was the one and only LaCroft.

"Storm my Department? Really? So you were planning to pay me a visit?" Roud narrowed slightly, his demeanor icy and unyielding. "Forgive my confusion, but whatever for?"

Silence clouded the space between them, as Gaara scrutinized Roud deeply.

"The Mission." Gaara retorted with a voice booming with unsettling authority. "I didn’t realize you’ve been growing softer by the years, Roud."

"I see you’re still as hot tempered and sharp-tongued as ever." Roud spoke, unfazed by Gaara’s taunting. "With your unholy temper, I still don’t understand how you can sit on the same table as I. But then again... even termites can find their way into palaces. So what more of you?"

"YOU—"

Gaara’s red vibrant hair was already gearing up in a dance of fury.

"You have the guts to talk back when you bloody well didn’t do your part well? Take a good look at yourself Roud, you’ve become SOFT!"

"Really?" Roud chuckled in amusement. "Tell me, how in the name of God, did I get soft?"

"No Earls, Roud... no EARLS!" Gaara lashed out. "There were no Earls on that mission, just worthless pathetic Half-Meriqs and lesser nobles."

If there were even Barons, wouldn’t that have been better? In the end, wasn’t that just a waste of his bloody time?

Gaara’s lips twitched unnaturally. "With my current rank, when was the last time I, a Department Head, went out to deal with such a worthless task?"

"Half-Meriqs and Lesser Nobles?" Roud questioned, his expression still the same. "Are you sure you’re reporting it right?"

"HAH~" Gaara laughed furiously. "It seems you’ve really given too much credit and value lately. Do you think I have so much free time on my hands that I’ll use my precious time to come over and talk rubbish? Who the hell do you think you are to think I can go so far just for you?"

Slowly walking toward Roud, Gaara’s eyes were flaming.

"Truth be told, I would want nothing more than to use this matter to pin and bash your head up to a pulp. However..." Gaara paused. "We have bigger matters to handle."

With that he continued on, leaving Roud standing in place with one final message: "If I were you, I would figure out what those bloody Vampires were up to, and why your Department keeps getting the wrong Intel."

Medoku gave a respectful nod to Roud, following his Department Head in silence. From the start to the end, he had not Uttered a single word.

Gaara and Medoku soon turned another hallway corner, no longer able to see Roud and LaCroft.

As they walked, Medoku took out his coin, flipping it in the air to read yet another decision-making call.

Tch–

Gaara rolled his eyes heavenwards. "What does your coin say now?"

"That we should handle this matter ourselves..."

"Oh, Yeah?" Gaara didn’t think deeply, teasing playfully. "Well, even if we wanted to, you know we’re also swamped. I just received urgent news from Order Chief Zen about his return from the Holy Church."

In a few days Zen will return from the Vatican. His letter, though incredibly short, spelled out the heavy storm they’ll have to partake in once he returns.

"Let Roud do it," Gaara barked. "After all, it was he and his Intelligence Department that messed things up for everyone."

Hmph!

Gaara stormed out childishly, with Medoku unhurriedly following behind.

—And as the turbulence between the powerful continued, time flew by in the blink of an eye.

.

.

Time spun like thrown dice in a casino.

Levon rose from sheets at 5 AM, his eyes drained of all sleep.

Today was supposed to be Lecture Day, but everyone knew just what the day held in store for them.

The Bloodren Competitions Begin—Phase 1!

Who can honestly sleep in peace after knowing how important today was?

It was a long, long, long night: one Riddled with unrest and the annoying sounds from nature.

Recently, there have been strange chickens migrating around the Bloodren 10 estate... chickens that had the habits of singing at odd hours.

Well, they were up.

Rather than heading to their classroom, the gang stood outside the estate, knowing they would get a premium escort service available for all Bloodren Fighters.

Today was their day—their day to shine, rise, fall or drown in failure.

"Wow! Take a look, it’s a Flying Ship!"

"What? Can it be that Tinkerbell’s pixie dust is real?"

"Incredible! I understand us flying using our shards. But that ship isn’t a shard. You can just tell.... So how did they do it?"

Gathered outside the Estate’s gates, the group stared at a majestic ancient lumber ship approaching them from a distance.

Yes, it was a flying ship.

On it were several uniformed staff with white rectangular pieces of fabric tied from ear to ear. These white fabrics were the lengths of handkerchiefs, dangling from the bridge of their nose to their neck bones below their chins.

’What position do they hold?’ Levon frowned, having never seen such uniforms before.

On the flying ship, the staff stood poised and collected, their leader, a very short kid.

But then again... in this place where people look the same for decades, it’s hard to tell who is really what.

Despite how friendly the man (16-year-old-looking) seemed, everyone felt an imposing aura emitting from his body.

"Congratulations, Bloodrens. You’ve made it this far." The kid stated, with a rather calm and mature voice streaming out his mouth. "I go by the name Phix— the Competition Master in charge of all Bloodren 10 tournaments... Now get on."

His instructions were clear and precise, giving no room for questioning.

With the boat still elevated high up, several people activated their Shard abilities. And in no time the ship made an impressive arc, swishing away like a shooting star.

Everyone stood or sat on the deck, no one knowing their inner thoughts. Everyone already had a sense of where they were going.

Levon looked at the passing surroundings, no one knowing what he was thinking of. Just like that, they arrived at the familiar dome-shaped structure they visited earlier. The ship stopped at the far back of the vast dome-shaped structure.

There, they were taken in through an underground entryway.

The whole thing was a Hypogeum—A complex network of tunnels and spaces where fighters were held before being released into the arena.

After arriving at a simple hall, Levon looked around thoughtfully.

The space was empty, except for a single elevated podium at the far end. And behind the hall was a giant screen, the largest they have ever seen in their lives.

Soon other people they didn’t recognize, slowly joined their group.

"This must be the other Bloodren 10s we’ve heard about."

"Just look at how huge they are?" Many in the group muttered.

Sorry, but they looked like they had been slaying Zombies for decades.

Veins popped, bodies swollen with power, arrogance evident in their every move, they looked untouchable.

Victorio Louche and his men also turned his attention to these people thoughtfully.

It would be a lie to say that these Old Bloodrens weren’t eye-catching. They all looked strong, as if they had undergone some hellish training to get here.

But... Was this still enough to make Levon and a select few scared?

Fufufufufufu~

Their eyes shone with a strange light when looking at these Old Bloodrens.

’Phase 1, huh?’

Good, good...

Now they were even more pumped up than BEFORE!
