Her Rebirth.-Chapter 22
Chapter 22: Chapter 22
Amelia dragged her luggage against the road, an irritated expression on her face.
A strange thing had happened.
After she came back from the café in the evening, the hotel receptionist had told her not to enter because the hotel was already booked.
Amelia, though annoyed and a bit flabbergasted, decided not to make a fuss about it and only requested to take her luggage only to discover that her luggage had already been brought out and left at the entrance.
After she left, she had tried lodging at every hotel she could find in the city, but each one seemed to be fully booked.
Which made things suspicious, very suspicious.
Her suspicion was confirmed when she discovered her card had been frozen.
Then she automatically knew that Mason was behind it.
He was really forcing her to come back, huh?
He was really scared of Grandfather Cosgrove’s wrath.
He had thought that, as usual, after chasing her away, she would come back crawling like a dog. A pitiful dog begging for its owner’s love.
However, she was not who he thought she was. freewebnoveℓ.com
She had made up her mind.
She was not going to come back.
Thankfully, she had kept the 200 thousand dollars in a separate account, so while it was quite hurtful to lose a few thousand, she still had something to sustain her for the time being.
It’s just that, where was she going to stay?
She had thought of going to meet Grandfather Cosgrove, but wasn’t that the same as going back to the Cosgrove house? She was still giving her freedom away.
Then she would become utterly dependent on the Cosgroves. If she became dependent on Grandfather Cosgrove and he eventually dies, what happens to her? She won’t be able to stay in the Cosgrove family because Ray doesn’t seem to like her, and he was the next heir. And she knew Grandfather Cosgrove could never make her the heiress because of how traditional he was. Even if she goes to him to teach her the ways of the family business, Grandfather Cosgrove may even become suspicious that she is trying to usurp Ray’s place thus causing his affection towards her to fall. No matter how doting someone was, they always had a line that shouldn’t be crossed.
Besides, she wanted Grandfather to discover she had left after a long time. She knew that Mason would probably block the news from Grandfather Cosgrove bidding till the time she came back. But that was if she did ever come back and Grandfather Cosgrove, discovering this after a long time had passed his anger is bound to be greater.
Amelia had also thought of Marie Denver; however, she had already sent her a letter requesting to see her, so she couldn’t overstep, or it might give a bad impression of her.
The only other option was Selena.
Though after that night, they hadn’t really spoken to each other again, but hopefully, she would agree to take her in for the night.
As Amelia mulled over her predicament, a sleek black Rolls-Royce whizzed past her.
Inside the car, Kai leaned back against the seat, his eyes closed as he puffed out a cloud of cigarette smoke.
"Boss, your fiancée," his driver murmured.
His eyes opened, revealing his cold gray irises.
He had heard the rumors that she had been kicked out of the Cosgrove house, and judging by the sight of her dragging her luggage along the street, it seemed to be quite true.
"Should I stop to pick her up?" his driver asked cautiously.
"No," he said coldly, then closed his eyes again.
However, the image of Amelia in the bar, handing him the handkerchief, flashed in his mind as well as the soft feel of her hands when they had shaken at the banquet and her focused expression when she had intently read the book at the café.
He sighed.
He may as well pick her up; she was his fiancée, after all.
"Turn back."
Amelia watched as the black car, which had gone past her, suddenly reversed and stopped beside her.
Amelia became guarded, her grip on her suitcase tightening.
Was this the famous kidnapping scenario she had seen in Amelia’s memories from the dog-blood movies she had watched?
The tinted window of the black car rolled down, revealing the owner’s face.
It was Kai.
Amelia felt a bit surprised seeing Kai, but she was more curious as to why he had stopped.
"Get in." The words were completely devoid of any emotion, a contrast to the way he had spoken warmly to her earlier at the café.
Amelia hesitated before opening the car and entering.
Well, she couldn’t say no to a free ride, especially when she was short on money.
As she sat comfortably, she muttered a soft, "Thank you."
The car began to move again, and the atmosphere became quiet.
She took a glance at the man as he took another puff of his cigarette. Up close, she couldn’t help but appreciate how handsome he was, with his slightly long black hair and his cold gray eyes.
While he did look handsome, the smell of cigarette smoke, accompanied by the metallic scent of blood, wafted into her nose, making her scrunch it up.
It felt quite uncomfortable.
Just three hours ago, she had seen him at the café. He hadn’t smelled like this then.
Where had he been?
However, she was the one being offered a free ride, so she wasn’t going to complain nor get too curious. Curiosity killed the cat, after all.
Instead, she moved her gaze outside, watching the pretty city lights.
Kai, noticing her slight discomfort, let out an annoyed sigh before pressing the cigarette against the ashtray, putting it out.
"Where are you headed?" he asked, breaking the silence.
"A friend’s place," she replied. "You can drop me off ahead."
Kai frowned slightly.
Everyone in the circle knew that Amelia Cosgrove had no friends, no friends apart from the ones he had seen in the bar.
And those people weren’t good.
If he wanted to get his grandfather off his back, he should at least have a fiancée who hadn’t been accused of being a drug addict.
He knew that his grandfather, upon hearing that he had gotten engaged to a woman he was not aware of, would require that her information be brought before him to see if she was fitting. If she was not, he would once again try to force another woman upon him.
So, to take precautions, he had looked into her first.
And from what he had gathered, Amelia Cosgrove had no real friends.
Not anymore.
The so-called "friends" she spoke of was a carefully crafted group, one orchestrated by none other than Lilac.
A machination designed to paint Amelia as unruly, irresponsible, and self-destructive.
A person unworthy of respect.
It was a classic social trap: surround her with the wrong people, create just enough scandal, and let the rumors do the rest.
And the worst part? Amelia seemed entirely unaware of it.
Besides, the so-called friend group had already begun to resent her, so betraying her was only a matter of time.
"It’s better you stay at my place. " He said flatly. "You are my fiancée, after all."
