Dungeon Raider System-Chapter 505: The actual trap
Not long Uriel and the girls left the 'hospital' they encountered the first enemies. Fallen corporation soldiers were scattered all over the east district and Uriel soon realized that the only reason why he got to the hospital without encountering any enemies before was that they allowed it.
He felt a bit silly thinking on how he thought he was being 'stealthy' when following Tina, but then he wondered about the reason why they weren't killing everyone on sight. Outrunning a wendigo by himself wasn't that difficult and maybe Mary too would be able to do the same, but one thing he was certain of was that Vivian couldn't because she wasn't a hunter.
Uriel's heart raced as he tried to look for the best path to follow, but unfortunately to him they had already been spotted and a couple wendigo hybrids rushed towards them drooling profusely out of their mouths.
"Stay behind me." Uriel muttered to Mary as he stepped forward to meet the incoming enemies mid way. In spit of not looking like it, Uriel did so in self preservation as he couldn't afford to lose the twenty percent boost to his strength before coming back to his friends.
He readied the 'Red thread of fate' and met his enemies head on thinking he would outmatch them, though what happened instead was him being thrown away at high speed.
The ever starving cryptids didn't bother to follow up as they were too focused on having a bite out of the two helpless women in front of them, but they didn't count on Uriel returning at an even greater speed with his Dash skill now active.

The sharp dagger crossed both the hybrid's throats in a split second and red blood gushed from their wounds, though they didn't react in pain. Instead, they both attempted to take a bite out of Uriel's hand as he went near them, but thankfully failed.
"They're healing!" Mary shouted when she noticed the wounds on their throats closed not even five seconds after Uriel deal what was supposed to be a final blow. At that moment, Uriel would have loved to retort with something witty, but both hybrids kept him busy by unleashing all sorts of beastly attacks upon him with complete disregard for their safety.
Although Mary was also a heavenly rank hunter, she was only able to follow their movements from a distance since she knew the moment she separated from her sister she would become the target of those unsightly creatures. Uriel seemed to have the upper hand as he was faster than both cryptids put together, but what took her by surprise was how similar their fighting styles were.
Uriel too fought with disregard for his safety and the only reason why he remained unscathed was because of his incredible movement speed. The reason for his fighting style being so aggressive was obviously that he grew accustomed to bearing Water warlock's blessing, but it was completely useless against hybrids with such regenerative powers.
It was as though no matter how much damage he dealt, it simply wasn't enough. At first he thought it was a matter of strength and that maybe his cuts were too shallow, but later he was able to confirm that he managed to slice one of their limbs through. Unfortunately, the slice was so clean the hybrid had no issues regenerating it instantly before it fell off.
Maiming them was impossible, overpowering them was very unlikely and since he didn't know their weakness, taking advantage of a weak spot was also not an option. Just to make sure, Uriel attempted to force them to swallow a trite in the off chance that they were allergic to silver like the sinkwalkers, but instead of bursting like soap bubbles the hybrid seemed to be pleased.
'Doppelgangers I can manage, even eclipses don't pose an issue if I play my cards right, but these things are too troublesome.' Uriel inwardly complained as he took some distance from the cryptids. This time, instead of mindlessly following after him the creatures retreated giving Uriel a much needed respite.
"What's their deal?" Asked Mary with a flabbergasted look on her face.
"They probably realized they can't take me by themselves or maybe they're trying to get me tired. They look and act like monsters, but their movements are strategic...," Uriel found himself replying in admiration. They took advantage of their regeneration just like he used to do back when Water warlock was within him, which is why he understood there was a method to their madness.
"That's it!" he shouted, managing to startle both sisters.
"What is it?" Vivian asked right after letting out a heave.
"I think I know how to defeat them, but you're not going to love this, Vivian." Uriel muttered and then gestured for Mary to move away from her sister. Without hesitation, Mary left her sister's side and the supposed hybrids appeared seemingly out of nowhere and launched a quick attack towards Vivian who was now left alone.
The poor woman closed her eyes, not because she didn't trust Uriel, but because if things went badly she'd rather die without even knowing the outcome instead of seeing other people getting hurt because of her.
"Their movements are unnatural, like they're being controlled by strings and the reason for that is simple. They are being controlled by the wendigos, these aren't hybrids, they're not even failed experiments, they're the real deal!" Uriel explained after the two cryptids started vanishing. Then, right behind them a flux orb appeared seemingly out of nowhere.
"How!? How did you kill them?" Mary asked as she didn't see what happened. Uriel didn't move fast nor did he make any suspicious movement. It looked as though he swung his dagger at the creatures but failed, only he didn't fail.
"This cryptids need to consume human flesh constantly to keep functioning, that's why I knew they would pounce on Vivian at the first chance they got. They don't act like humans because they're not humans anymore, but they're not hybrids either.
They're just empty vessels to the true cryptids possessing them." Uriel's discovery could potentially save what was left of the city, but that was only if he got to share what he now knew with everyone.
The problem with that was that everyone was fighting against each other in spites of the grave danger laying siege to the city from the outside and the many cryptids and hybrids lurking at every turn.
Uriel took a minute to gather his breath after the fight and recover some flux energy which allowed him to notice the chaos that befell the city. Civilians and hunters were dropping like flies everywhere he looked and the buildings collapsing and ongoing fires only made things worse and then it hit him.
Skinwalkers didn't just kill people, they played with their minds and hybrids might be similar. While he did manage to free the prisoners in the east district and kill a few doppelgangers, in the end it was their victory.
'The ambush was never meant to kill me, it was just a bait and I took it without even questioning it.' Uriel inwardly cursed at his own naivety. 'But then, how would they know I would do that? Were they expecting me or any capable hunter?'
"Uriel, it's getting dark, we need to get moving." Mary snapped him out of his reverie and they continued on their way following the main street to save some time.
Not long after they reached the west district, though, Mary stumbled upon a civilian trapped beneath debris.
"Please, help... me." The man muttered. Saving him would cost her nothing but a couple seconds and she extended her arm towards him, but Uriel pulled his revolver and opened fire against him.
"What is wrong with you!? You monster!" Mary cried, but then she felt her sister Vivian's hand on top of her shoulder and took a better look at Uriel's victim. The scattered remains of the creature started putting themselves together at a slow but steady pace until Uriel dropped a coin on top of it.
"Don't do unnecessary things, we're getting close." Uriel muttered in annoyance under the now obscure sun. Although they had the gas lanterns he bought from his souvenir shop like usual, their move speed would still decrease and it made them targets for cryptids and humans alike.
Any sort of light source stood out greatly in the distance, but that turned out to be a good thing to Uriel since he was now able to see a red glimmer in the distance and he knew exactly who it was.
"I'll go first, you girls stay safe." Uriel said right before activating his Dash skill, leaving the girls without even the chance to reply.
Both of them knew they couldn't expect it, but they hoped Uriel would accompany them all the way towards his friends and it might have been the case if not for one simple reason.
Right besides the crimson light, an equally powerful golden one told Uriel Sam was close.
