Chimaera's Conquest: The Legend Of The Devourer-Chapter 35: Dungeon Date (1)
Chapter 35: Dungeon Date (1)
’Why did we spawn in the sky!?’ Adrian thought as the two began freefalling towards the ground.
The world around them blurred as they descended into the unknown. Once inside the dungeon, Adrian released his grip on Sophia, hoping she would somehow get outside. If not, he wanted to get away from her at least and clear the dungeon on his own.
However, Adrian’s plan hit a snag. Sophia wasn’t going anywhere until she saw his face, especially after hearing his voice.
Earlier, Adrian had revealed his voice, thinking it would shock Sophia for long enough for him to escape, but now his plan seemed to be falling apart.
’I should have invested the points to improve my intelligence! Fuck! I feel like a stupid good-for-nothing porter!’
Had he met Sophia alone before, he would have jumped at the opportunity to tell Sophia about everything had he found her alone.
But he hesitated after his newfound suspicion of the Church’s involvement in his supposed demise. The risk of exposing the truth to Sophia, potentially putting her in harm’s way, was a chance he couldn’t and wouldn’t take, no matter the consequences.
While Sophia was important to the Church, Adrian believed they wouldn’t hesitate before silencing anyone who could cause trouble for them. Rather than his revenge, his priority had turned to keeping her safe, even if it meant living his life apart from the girl he loved.
That’s why he wanted to distance himself from her. Unfortunately, Sophia was too stubborn and didn’t give up. She used her wind magic to tie them together, ensuring Adrian wouldn’t escape without answering her questions. freewebnσvel.cѳm
After that, Sophia cast a wind spell to soften her landing as they fell into the dungeon. On the other hand, Adrian, relying on his enhanced physique, could only hope that his body could endure the impact of skydiving from another dimension inside the dungeon.
But Sophia saved him there as well. Which wasn’t all that surprising given how she suspected the stranger was Adrian.
The portal spat them out onto a sandy beach, and the sound of crashing waves filled the air. But Adrian didn’t have any time to admire the beautiful beach.
The sudden dungeon travel had left them in a daze, and Adrian, intending to take advantage, decided to make a run for it. However, Sophia, who had been inside countless instance dungeons before, recovered sooner than Adrian expected and saw him escaping.
"Oh, you’re not slipping away this time," Sophia shook her head.
With a wave of her hand, she summoned a gust of wind, swiftly surrounding Adrian and yanking him towards herself. Adrian still struggled but in vain.
"Adrian, stop!" she yelled, sending another gust towards him. "I know it’s you behind that hoodie!"
The attack caught Adrian off guard. He stumbled backwards to dodge, only to fall. The tender gust hit his face, sending his hood flying off and revealing his face for Sophia to see.
Sophia gasped, her hand covering her mouth in shock. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she couldn’t look away. Adrian instinctively covered his face, remembering how disfigured his face was, and didn’t want Sophia to see him like that.
"Adrian..." Sophia’s voice wavered, her hands trembling as she reached out to touch his face.
Adrian flinched for a moment, wanting to push Sophia away, thinking she must be disgusted after looking at him.
But to his surprise, Sophia gently removed Adrian’s hands. Her touch still had the warm and comforting feeling he remembered. She then cupped her hands around his face and, with tears streaming down her cheeks, pressed her lips against his.
For a moment, everything stopped as Adrian felt her familiar embrace. It wasn’t until that moment that he remembered how lonely he had been in the few days he had lived as a chimaera.
Pulling away, Sophia lovingly stared into Adrian’s eyes.
"I thought I lost you. I thought you were gone forever." She said, holding onto him, fearing he might vanish if she released him even for a moment.
"I was... for a while," Adrian replied, trying to evade her gaze, but Sophia proved to be weirdly strong and tenderly held his face in place.
"What do you mean?"
"The Ravens... someone paid them to have me killed," Adrian clarified, unsure what Sophia would think about the truth.
Sophia’s eyes widened, horror etched across her face. But the horror was soon replaced by a confused expression.
"Killed you? But you’re here... you’re real, right?" Sophia mumbled, looking doubtful. "This fucking dungeon better not be playing tricks on me!"
Adrian smiled. It was rare to see Sophia curse so openly, but Adrian always found her reaction cute. Still, he wanted to quell her doubts first and pulled her in for another kiss.
"What do you think now?" he asked.
"Definitely... Real," she smiled back but then quickly got serious. "Seriously though, how are you alive if they killed you?"
Adrian took a deep breath, preparing to recount the tale of his survival.
"They sold my corpse to someone called Victor," he said. "That lunatic turned me into a chimaera, wanting me to serve as a soldier, but through dumb luck... I regained consciousness earlier than he planned, and now, here I am."
Hearing what Adrian had been through, Sophia buried her face in his chest. It was a joyous occasion, but she could only let her tears flow wildly. But it didn’t take long for anger to replace the tears.
"I swear I’ll make them pay for what they did to you-"
"No, you won’t."
"Wha-? If the Church gets to know what the Ravens did to you, even the slums won’t be able to protect them!"
"Why do you believe the Church would take action?" Adrian scoffed.
"Why wouldn’t they? You were a member of the Church! They have an obligation to protect you-"
Adrian sighed before smiling at Sophia’s trusting nature. Well, he couldn’t blame her; after all, he was like her for a while after being summoned to Nexaria.
"Think about it. The Ravens killed me before our supposed meeting could take place. However, the Church managed to form an alliance with them. Don’t you find it strange?"
Adrian could see the wheels turning in Sophia’s head. But before the two could continue, a guttural howl pierced the air, reminding them that they weren’t on a date but inside a dungeon.
"Let’s talk after we’re done dealing with the monsters," Sophia muttered.
"As you say, madame."
